When had she fallen asleep?
That was the first thought that went through Krissy’s mind as she woke in what was very bizarre surroundings. The floor was hard beneath her and the shelves that surrounded her were mostly empty. She appeared to be alone; at least, she couldn’t see, or hear, anyone else. That didn’t necessarily mean there weren’t others about, however.
Yet that didn’t really matter, at the moment. She’d find that out soon enough, she decided as she heaved herself up off the floor and automatically reached for the gun that was slid into the holster she wore around her thigh. With her weapon in hand, she warily turned in a circle. Her eyes scanned every nook and cranny that she could see, looking for anything that might resemble movement, and all the while she kept asking herself that same question.
When had she fallen asleep? She didn’t remember going to bed. She would remember laying down and that hadn’t happened. She was certain of that much, but that was about it. Nothing else was making sense. Why a library? Where was the threat?
That, of course, was when the knights began to move.
Spinning on her heel, Krissy had her gun aimed on them before they’d even fully stepped down off of their pillars. Narrowing her eyes slightly, she clenched her jaw then fired. The bullet hit the suit, there was a loud ding, and then it bounced off into nearby wall. Krissy flinched on instinct the immediately took a step backward and lowered her gun.
“Okay guys,” she called out with a little too much bravado in her tone. She tried again. “Listen, I don’t want trouble. Just show me the exit and I’ll get out of your library.” She took another step back. They continued to advance. She swallowed hard while glancing side to side for some way to get out. Her voice wavered ever so slightly as she tried her best to sound reasonable.
“I’ve never been much of a book person anyway...” She was just about to bolt behind the nearest set of shelves and hope they couldn’t track her every movement, when the doors began to open across the room. Without a word, only a quick glance to judge how close they were, she took off at a dead run for the exit.
As she reached the doors, she spun on her heel and immediately began firing at the knights who had turned and began chasing after her. The bullets flew off in various directions but she kept it up, each time striking them in a different spot. There had to be a weakness of some kind. If there was one thing she knew, it was that everything had a weakness.
Then she was out of bullets, and out of the library. She used her momentum to spin her back around on her toe, pitching forward slightly but regaining her balance as she took off for a mad dash into what she realized was some kind of city. She didn’t pause to take in her surroundings, though, she just ran. She was down the steps and across the lawn before she realized she was heading directly toward a road that was obviously filled with traffic. Cutting a hard left as she passed by some trees that lined the edge of the lawn, she surged forward to increase her speed.
And slammed directly into someone.
With a muffled grunt, the teenager fell backward onto the unyielding sidewalk. Her gun slid out of her hand and clattered away from her as she threw her arms out behind her to catch the brunt of her fall. The hard ground bit into her palms and her head jerked back as she instinctively drew up her knees and prepared to kick out if whatever she’d crashed into happened to be a threat of some kind. At this point, she wasn’t taking any chances because she had no idea what in the hell was going on.
Lucifer had decided to take a walk. It was an odd impulse, but with everything that he’d been dealing with the past few weeks, the thought of just wandering around on the streets by himself had seemed the preferable option. Compared to the whine of his big brother and the uneasy feeling of having no idea who he was, the buzz of the locals was calming in a way that he couldn’t quite describe, and as he turned up past the library, he had started to untense when someone interrupted the dull, blissful emptiness that had started to fill his head. He was unmoved by the figure crashing directly into him. He might have been thrown off had she been taller or wider, but as it was, the young girl that he found himself looking down at was little more than a slip of a thing that couldn’t have upset his stance even if that had been the aim of the collision.
Which it probably wasn’t considering the gun that was now laying at his feet. Bending down to pick it up, turning the weapon over in his hands with a thoughtful frown, he turned his attention back to the girl with a shake of his head, “If you’re going to run into a crowd, your weapon should at least be holstered,” He said, popping the clip out to inspect it. “This could have gone off if it had been loaded,” He said, putting it back into place before turning it to hand it back to her.
Most people probably would have launched into a lecture about how someone her age really shouldn’t be handling firearms especially not in public, but well, Lucifer wasn’t exactly known for going by what other people would probably do.
For once, Krissy didn't have a snappy comeback. He was right, she had to admit as she took back her own weapon. She'd screwed up. She'd freaked out and bolted, instead of thinking things through. It was a dumb move, a rookie mistake. It wasn't going to happen again. Sliding her gun into its holster as she rose fully to her feet, she brushed off her hands on her pants and cleared her throat slightly.
“Thanks,” she said first and foremost. “For giving it back.” Not everyone would have done that. She'd gotten lucky, with that. Glancing over her shoulder warily, she swallowed hard before looking back to the man standing there. “Sorry for running into you like that,” she tacked on almost absently. Another glance behind her and she cleared her throat once more before once again meeting his gaze. She opened her mouth to explained, hesitated, then exhaled sharply.
“I should probably go,” she instead stated, making to move past him. Then she thought better of it. He'd been considerate. Maybe he had some information, too. It was worth a shot.
“There were these guys...” She trailed off. “Or something. I'm not sure. They looked like knights. Inside this library...” Krissy shook her head as she thought twice about what she was doing. What if he didn't believe her? No, she needed to play this safe, not fast and loose like she'd been doing so far. “Actually,” she tacked on, forcing a nonchalant look in his direction, “nevermind. Forget I said anything. Which way to the nearest bus stop?”
She'd get her bearings first, then she'd start questioning people.
“The knights don’t go past the threshold of the library,” Lucifer said with a shrug. If that was what she was so worried about, she could calm herself. They’d probably just been chasing her to try and give her her PDA. Which was kind of funny if he thought about it for too long, and considering laughing probably would have given the wrong impression, Lucifer pushed that from his mind before glancing around. “It’s... three blocks north of here, but it’s not going to do you any good. The buses only service the city. Not much else to go in this place,” He said, worrying his lower lip.
If she didn’t have a PDA yet, she wouldn’t have gotten the full rundown on the place from anyone. God, this was going to get awkward fast. Either he was going to come off as crazy, or she was going to believe him and have a full on breakdown. Or, well, there was a possibility it could go another way, but Lucifer wasn’t going to put any money on that option.
“Anything specific that you’re looking for? And if you’re going to say way out of town, I’m sorry to break it to you, but there isn’t one of those.
Krissy blinked. She blinked again. In fact, the entire time he spoke, all she could seem to do was blink. She certainly couldn't make sense of his words. No way home? She shook her head. “That's not an option,” she stated flatly. “I have to go home.” Fighting the urge to start snapping demands at him, the girl instead turned toward the street in search of some kind of sign. Fourth street. Of course. It couldn't be something telling, like Hollywood Boulevard. No. It had to be boring and generic and not assist her in any way, shape or form.
She was starting to sense a theme.
“How do you know about those knights?” she suddenly demanded as she spun toward him, this time a knife from her belt in her hand. She wasn't as good with a knife as she was with a gun but she was no slouch either. And something was very much off, right now. This guy knew too much. She didn't like it. Eyes narrowing, she questioned sharply, “What is going on? Start talking.”
”
“I know about the knights because I came through that library, too,” Lucifer said, arching an eyebrow at the girl in front of him. She was very reactionary, dangerously so, in fact. Were he at all vulnerable, that knife probably could have done some damage, but as it was, he wasn’t even phased by the presence of it. “Everyone has. Everyone that’s not a local here, at least. Surprise, you’ve been kidnapped,” He said, the phrase laced with sarcasm before heaving a sigh and raising a hand to press to his face. “Let’s see. How exactly am I supposed to explain this? We’re basically in a people zoo? I think that sums things up quickly enough without getting too deep into the gritty details.”
Of course, the details were the important part, but there was no sense in overwhelming her too much to start with. “Where were you pulled from? Anyone specific you might want to find? They could be running around here, too. Go on. Throw me a name. I’m pretty good with names,” He said, a grin crossing his face. It was probably unnerving that he wasn’t at all worried about how she was threatening him, but her reaction to that he could worry about later.
Too calm. He was too calm. No one should be this calm when discussing their own kidnapping, much less one on a scale massive enough to require an entire city to hold them all. A people zoo, he'd called it. Krissy didn't like the implications of that. No, that sounded far too settled, as though she didn't have any choice but to accept it. That wasn't going to happen.
Her gaze remained suspicious at his lack of reaction to her knife. She hadn't expected begging or pleading, not by any means, but something would have been nice. There wasn't anything, though. She might as well have been holding a stick, for all the attention he was paying to it. Slowly she put the blade away, eying him closely the whole while. He could just be acting, hoping she'd do precisely that, but she doubted it. No, something more was going on. She didn't know what, but she knew she was going to figure it out.
“I want details,” she finally uttered. Frowning, she glanced around then pinned him with a pointed look. “I need details,” she corrected herself. No way was she giving him a name. She just continued to stare, unblinking. To anyone at a glance, she looked quite in control of herself. Chin thrust up a bit, head held high, she seemed to be absolutely fine. Yet there was something in her eyes, a glimpse of the wariness, the uncertainty, the fear she was feeling. Her hand opened and closed reflexively from its place at her side. She was used to holding a weapon when she felt this way. She didn't like how vulnerable she felt without one. Quickly, she stuffed her hands into the pockets of her coat and waited, giving him a look that said she wasn't going to drop this subject until he'd told her something of value and he could do that any time. Really.
“Ugh. Always with the details. People can’t just take the fact that they’re stuck and roll with it,” Lucifer said. He’d done just that. Of course, most people didn’t come here from being trapped in a cage that couldn’t be escaped and with absolutely no freedom of mobility. This place was a vacation for him as much as it was a prison for everyone else. “All right. Let’s see. God’s little brother, a god by the name of Asaph, created this world as an attempt to start his own reality. Thing is, he isn’t very good at it,” Lucifer said, gesturing to the city around him. “As you can see, it’s pretty much a carbon copy of what you lot have built, and the people here. Functional but kind of empty,” he said, shifting as he stuck his own hands into his pockets as he toed a foot along the ground. “So, instead, he decided that he was going to kidnap some of his sister’s creations to play with instead since his were just too dull. Thus, bing-bam-boom, here you are. Here we are. I’m not really sure what else I can give you other than that, so you’re going to have to get more specific with the questions for me to fill in anything else.”
This wasn't happening, Krissy decided as she listened to the guy “explain” the situation. She had hit her head, somehow, and this was all some very realistic hallucination. That was the only thing she could think of to explain everything. She was pretty sure there was probably some deeper meaning to it all, too, but she couldn't be bothered to really think about it hard enough to figure out what that might be. Maybe later, when she was fully in control of her facilities and back in the land of sanity, she'd pick all of this apart and see what her mind had been pushing her to understand. For now, she just wanted it all to end and the best way she could think to do that was to call the figment of her imagination on his crap until her mind could figure out the difference between fantasy land and reality.
“More specific?” she echoed finally with a slight scoff. “You want more specific?” With a sudden, hard look, she took a step closer and tried to look as in charge of the situation as she could manage. “Fine. Are you insane? That specific enough for you?” She stared for a moment longer before adding pointedly, “Not that I need you to really answer that. It's pretty obvious that you are, if you really think I’m going to believe that I've been kidnapped by God's little brother.”
To her credit, Krissy didn't go for her knife again and attempt to stab him. That was progress, as far as she was concerned. She also didn't roll her eyes and brush past him, in search of someone who might tell it to her straight either. She knew no one she encountered would. Krissy was under no illusion that her subconscious would be any less stubborn than she was and she knew, just knew, now that her mind had settled on that ridiculous cover story, it was going to stick with it until the bitter end.
“Am I insane? Eh. You know, that’s a hard one. I’ve thought about it,” Lucifer said, shifting on his feet as he offered her a hint of a smile. “Really mulled over the possibility, but it wasn’t about this. Wider issues were at play when I was doing that. And I might be a lot of things, but I’m not a liar. You can believe me or don’t. You’ll figure it out yourself one way or another. So. Those names... Still set on not giving me one, or should I just take a picture and post it up for everyone to see?” He asked, pulling his PDA out of his pocket and holding it up at her. “Lost mouthy little brat who doesn’t believe she’s been kidnapped. Free to a good home or anyone who recognizes her. Yes? No? Or are you going to give me another option?”
He wanted a name? Fine. Krissy would give him a name. Mouth pressed together in a thin line, her gaze was an openly baleful one as she thought specifically of Aiden. Then she thought of Josephine. She pictured the two of them, side by side and armed, ready to fight to the death to take out the latest threat to roll into town. She thought of them all three sitting at the breakfast table, telling jokes over waffles. Then, when she had a very good mental image of them, she opened her mouth to speak.
“Dean Winchester.”
There. Let's see her brain make sense of that, she decided stubbornly. Any second now, there would be a flicker, a glimpse of the walls of this particular wacky dream collapsing in on itself. She waited for that moment, stubbornly staring back at the figment of her imagination. Slowly, she arched an eyebrow, feigning curiosity. “Is he around, by any chance? Oh,” her tone turned flat, “I meant, has he been kidnapped along with us?” She barely refrained from using quotation marks around the word kidnapped but her tone made it clear she didn't buy for one second that that's what really was going on.
“Dean!” Lucifer exclaimed with near joy. “Deany.. Dean-o. Deany-Bopper. The Deanmeister. I know him!” It was always easier when he didn’t even have to try to come up with an answer to the question. “He’s around here somewhere. Either at the garage or his house. I could take you there. Or just tell you where to go if you don’t want the extra baggage,” He said, rocking on the balls of his feet before turning to glance down the street before turning to look back at her, leaning in and dropping his voice.
“Or was that just a name to try and throw me off? Because you can toss me another. Sam’s about, too, if you want to talk to him. Though, I think he’d be less inclined to let me into his house. We’ve got... issues. History. Messy stuff,” Lucifer said, making a face before allowing his features to settle back into a benign smile. “What about your name?” He asked. “Give me yours. I’ll give you mine. It’s a good one. You’ll like it.”
“Deany-Bopper?” Krissy repeated incredulously before she could even think to stop herself. “Wow,” she continued, tone immediately turning flat. “I must have hit my head harder than I thought.” With a shake of the aforementioned head, the girl's gaze went from hard to skeptical. There was something else there, though, something that wasn't quite acceptance but was fairly close to it. No way would she be hallucinating something for this long, while still struggling against it. And as weird as it sounded, and as unlikely as it was, she was really wondering if maybe, just maybe, this was actually happening.
If that was the case, she needed to get with the program now. Which was easier said than done, obviously, but she was willing to consider trying.
Not without a heavy sigh and a hand scrubbed down her face, first, though. Letting her arms fall back at her sides again rather than returning her fists to her pockets, her shoulders slumped ever so slightly in a clear sign of defeat. Either this was real, and things in her life had just gone from weird to downright insane, or she was insane. Whichever the answer, she still had to accept what she was being told. At least for now. That was the only thing really left for her to do, really. Just go with the flow and see where she wound up.
So she answered him. Her tone was heavy but not as hardened as before. More weariness than anything, really. “I'm Krissy,” she introduced herself. “Krissy Chambers. And no, I don't want you to take me to Dean or Sam. I just...” She paused, something he'd said finally registering in her rapidly spinning mind.
“What kind of issues do you have with Sam?” she questioned. Just like that, the wariness was back.
“Oh, a lot. He’s still really pissy about that time I talked him into letting me wear him like a suit,” Lucifer said with a shrug of his shoulders. “Like I would even try that now. I’ve got a perfectly good body right here that isn’t falling apart for once. No reason to risk that even if it would give old Nicky a chance to breathe on his own. There’s also some pesky issues about how I was pretty set on eradicating humanity from the planet, but I’m not so set on that anymore so I’m not sure why it’s still an issue. But you know those Winchester boys. They hold grudges like nobody’s business. Anyways. I promised you a name for a name, so hey,” Lucifer said, extending a hand with a pleasant smile. “I’m Lucifer.”
Lucifer. Of course. That was just perfect. Now, she was either hallucinating about the devil or she was actually talking to him. That... actually, now that she thought about it, that sounded pretty much exactly what her life had been like, as of late.
With a soft snort, Krissy gave a slight nod. "Right," she replied, a touch of bemusement that was coupled with a heavy dose of weariness lacing her tone. "Of course you're Lucifer. I probably should have seen that one coming." With a soft sigh, she quoted a line from one of her favorite books, the words muttered under her breath. "This must be Thursday. I never could get the hang of Thursdays."
The scary thing was, though, it made sense the more she thought about it. He really hadn't been concerned with her weapons in the slightest, and hadn't even looked like he was considering lecturing her over being armed in the first place. Not to mention, after first meeting the Winchesters, Krissy had done a little digging on the guys and had come across all those supposed rumors concerning Armageddon, Heaven, Hell, and the Winchesters. She had written them off, of course, because even she'd had her limits on what was believable and what was pure crap, but now she had to wonder.
Feeling the headache she thought she'd managed to avoid now returning with a vengeance, Krissy's brow furrowed slightly as she glanced around before turning her gaze back to the supposed fallen Archangel standing in front of her.
"So," she said as she squared her shoulders a bit, "just to make sure I'm getting this. We've all been kidnapped to somewhere... else, by God's little brother, because he wants his own little sandbox to play in, but is basically an unimaginative tool who can't make playthings of his own, so he brings us here instead. You are Lucifer, as in the devil himself, but, instead of wanting to destroy humanity and pretty much the whole world, like you used to want to do, now you're fine with just hanging out with us, and for some reason that I don't understand at all, Dean and Sam aren't trying to kill you but are instead just letting you do your thing. Am I on point so far?"
“A generally simplified version, but yeah, pretty much summarizes the long and short of it. There’s some fine details in there between the broad strokes, like why and how I came to no longer want to destroy humanity, but those really don’t matter in the long run if the results are in place. Not unless you’re curious, but you seem more arm and go rather than ask the how, what, and why,” Lucifer said, offering Krissy a playful smile. “And luckily, we’re not actually about to be destroyed, so you’ve got the chance to settle in rather than being jerked off on another crazy adventure,” He said with a wink before holding a hand out to her.
“Care to take a look around?” He asked. “Or I could take you to Dean, and he could manage it. I know my presence tends to put people off more than reassure them when everything else has been turned upside down. I’d put my money on a more familiar face easing the transition. Not to mention, he’s probably got plenty of news for you,” He said, a knowing twinkle in his eyes and an edge to his smile that made it obvious that he knew something he wasn’t telling. “And he’s better at explaining the circumstances of this place than I am. It’s one big blah to me.”
