Who: Lexi Branson & Huck Finn
What: With Asshole Evil!Stefan in town, Lexi is beginning to worry about the humans she's close to; Huck especially
Where: Their Apartment
When: Thursday, January 19th. Late at night
Rating: Probably not high
Status: In Progress

Ever since Morgan Freeman had decided to bring the asshole version of Stefan back to Colligo, Lexi had been on edge. While it was true that she had seen her best friend like this on more than one occasion and she'd managed to bring him back each time, there hadn't been quite so many humans close to the situation then. So many humans that risked getting hurt or killed if Stefan got bored and wanted to try and prove that he was beyond help and one of those humans was Huck. Sure there was Elena and Bonnie and Jeremy, but they were at least protected by the fact that Stefan couldn't get into their apartments without being invited in. Huck however didn't have such a luxury because Lexi lived in the apartment too and since she was a vampire Stefan had an open invitation and it was impossible to vampire proof the apartment. That meant that Huck was the most vulnerable and she couldn't have that.

With all these thoughts running through her head, Lexi hadn't slept much the night before and tonight was no different. After Huck had fallen asleep, she'd gotten out of bed and was currently pacing the floor in the living room, her bare feet making soft noises against the floor as she twisted her daylight ring around her finger. The ring that Huck had made for her when he'd had magical powers was her most prized possession and would work in their favor if they were going to go after Stefan during the day, because he didn't know she had one and wouldn't expect her to pop up somewhere when the sun was out. Of course if she went after him and lost him then chances were he'd try to get back at her and if he found out her and Huck were dating then he'd go after him and she couldn't have that. Stefan may have been her best friend, but if he dared touch Huck then he would find himself with a stake through his heart so fast he'd be dead before he realized it.

Huck Finn, Vampire Hunter woke up from a rather unusual, and vaguely disturbing dream--in which he had just tried to stake a Salvatore with the same pencil that he had once turned into a newt--to the sound of rustling in the other room. He reached for Lexi at once, and found her side of the bed empty. That eased his mind somewhat, but not enough to merely roll over and go back to sleep.

No, he rolled out of bed, slipped into his moccasins, and padded out to join her--listening carefully to make sure she was the only other person in the apartment with him. He didn't think the current version of Stefan had any idea who he was, which was a shame, really. Huck didn't care if the ripper had been Lexi's best friend at one point in his un-life. He was nobody's friend now, and if it hadn't been for his promise not to go all League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Huck would just as soon shove a shotgun in Stefan's arrogant mouth and pull the trigger before anybody else got hurt.

But he knew better than to go off on some harebrained hunting spree with next to no experience, and only the knowledge that he'd gleaned from his research in his favor. "Lexi?"

Lexi should have heard Huck the moment he woke up, but her mind was so preoccupied that she didn't hear him until he said her name, causing her to turn and face him, her robe open over a pair of sleep shorts and a tank top, "Huck, did I wake you up?" Now she felt bad for waking him up. Any other time if they were both up at this time of night they were doing something else entirely, not standing in the middle of the living room, staring at each other. They might not have been together a long time, but they had connected in such a way that it should have been obvious to Huck that something was bothering Lexi; not that it was a stretch to guess the main thing that was bothering her, but it went so much farther than just Stefan being an evil asshole. She hadn't wanted to worry Huck before she'd decided what she was going to do, but now it seemed that she wasn't going to find a way around it.

"Nah," he drawled, his voice still slightly thick with sleep. He crossed the room, and wrapped his arms around her, holding her close to his chest. Sure, she was physically stronger, more durable than he was, and she had a lot more life experience, but that guy that was out there terrorizing the locals had been her friend, at one point. No matter how badly Huck might want to take him out, he knew how upset that Lexi had been by the dream version of Steve the Ripper. And this was the real thing.

"Couldn't sleep," he said, as if it were no big deal. "Make you some hot chocolate?"

Lexi knew that wasn't true, but she wasn't about to call him out on it; especially not when he wrapped his arms around her. She might have been stronger than him and older than him, but she was still just a girl who was upset and needed to be comforted at times and this was one of those times. "Yeah, that'd be nice." It took a lot at that moment to actually let him go in order to allow him to move away and into the kitchen, because with the knowledge that Stefan was in town, she was almost afraid that if she let Huck go that something awful would happen. She knew that logically Stefan wasn't going to burst in the door at that moment, but that didn't stop her from worrying.

If anyone did break down the door, Huck did own a weapon, or two, and provided he had time to get to one of them, he would do his best to defend his home. Between himself and Lexi, he was confident they could protect themselves. Vampires weren't immortal. Almost nothing was. They were just really bad at dying.

He held onto Lexi a moment longer, then tucked her under his arm and drew her along with him to the kitchen so she would still be close by while he heated a syrupy mixture of cocoa, sugar, milk, a little vanilla, and a pinch of nutmeg in a pot, until it began to bubble and froth. Then he added more milk, and continued warming it. Not that he had anything against Swiss Miss, but times like this just called for the real thing.

It was true, that Swiss milkmaid had nothing on Huck's hot chocolate recipe. She waited till he'd poured it into mugs before she spoke again, "I've been thinking about this whole Stefan thing and it might be safer for you if I didn't live here for awhile." Part of her knew that it probably wouldn't make a difference whether she lived there or not, because if Stefan really wanted to go after someone he would think of another way to do it besides breaking into their apartment, but Lexi just wanted Huck to be safe.

Holding the mug between her hands, she watched Huck waiting for him to say something. Waiting for him to agree or tell her she was just being paranoid. Anything to kill the silence that had taken over the kitchen. If she was completely honest with herself she wanted him to tell her she was being paranoid so that she could stop worrying so much.

About to take a sip, Huck lowered his mug, his brows arching, then knitting together in a frown. "First of all, if he really wants to come after me, he's going to do with whether you live here or not. I already antagonized him once, over the network--but better he comes after me than some poor coed walking home from class. I, at least, walk around prepared to meet thugs in the alley, ever since that girl got jumped outside the newspaper office, during the whole election scandal. And I know what to use on vampires, and where to use it on them."

He set his mug down and leaned forward. "Secondly, if we're a couple, then that means we get through this together, or not at all. Whether it's being laid off from work, or you nursing me through some pathetic mortal illness, or me answering the door with a shotgun when your old boyfriends come a-courtin'. Am I right?"

He was right. Of course he was right. They were in this together no matter what happened. And really, if Stefan did come around while she was home, wouldn't Huck be safer if she was there? "I have given you some pretty informative tips on vampires, haven't I?" Her lips turned up into a slight smile as she looked over at him before sighing and running a hand through her long blond hair, "This whole thing with Stefan has just really shaken me up." She knew that she probably should have talked to Huck right after Stefan showed up instead of letting a whole day go by so that her worries mounted, because then she wouldn't have spent the last day and a half so worked up.

"There's still one problem. There's a chance that if Stefan finds out about us before we can do something about him then instead of going after you he'd try to go after me through you," It hadn't even occurred to Lexi before that there was every chance that instead of hurting Huck he could compel him to try and kill her, "If he was able to get to you and compel you to do something to me then that'd put me out of the picture to try and get through to him. I'm the only one who has been able to kick his ass back onto the wagon whenever he's fallen off. Without me he's guaranteed to be an asshole forever."

Of course he was right. Huck grinned. Oh, he'd been his share of wrong, too, but he did tend to learn from his mistakes. "Hey," he said, reaching for her. "I can only imagine I'd be in the same boat, if Tom Sawyer showed up with ten times the attitude. And what's this about Stefan compelling me? I thought that's what vervane charms are for."

If there was one thing Huck knew, it was superstitions, and how to follow them to the T. "I'll wear it in my pocket watch. I'll drink tea of the stuff. Whatever. But you've got to stop thinking like the whole world is sitting on your shoulders. If he's an asshole, it's because he's chosen to be one, and unless he chooses to straighten up and fly right, then nothing you or anybody else can say is going to change his mind, and we might just have to kick his ass. Period."

This was why Lexi loved Huck. Well there were other reasons, but this was one of them. No matter what was going on, he was able to keep calm and speak some sense into her. With everything that was going on she'd almost forgotten about vervain, "Right. Vervain. I'll ask one of the others if they know where I can get some." Stefan wouldn't know that Huck was on vervain unless he told him to do something extremely dangerous in front of him, but she doubted Stefan would take the time to make sure that he was completely compelled. "Your pocket watch is a good place since it's always on you."

She knew deep down that it might come to killing Stefan, but she hoped that they'd be able to get through to him again and get him back, "I know. If things don't work out the way they did the last few times this has happened then we're definitely going to have to do more than just kick his ass. We can't have a Ripper running around." The question then was whether or not me would stay dead. Glory had, but most everyone else came back so she wasn't sure if it was a bad guy thing or what. Talking about killing Stefan should have upset her more, but that wasn't Stefan, her best friend. That was Stefan the monster.
