Title: To Kill A King
Rating: G
Fandom/Pairing: Song of the Lioness quartet, specifically toward the end of Lioness Rampant. Implied Roger/Thom, implied Roger/Jonathan if you squint (don’t judge me; even Alanna says “I know you love him” in Hands of the Goddess).
Word Count: 2,903
Summary: An early morning summons to Jonathan’s room could spell ruin for Roger’s plan.
Author’s Note: I always wondered how Roger knew to wait for Alanna on the palace walls, when the way he questions Thom makes it clear his spies aren’t worth their weight in mud, (not to mention being unanimously stupid enough not to pick up on the fact he wants to oh, destroy everything. That’s the kind of crazy that it’d be handy to notice, people) The pairing, well. There has to be some reason why Thom holds back from trying to discover what Roger is clearly up to. Then again, insanity does run in his family.

My defence for the thought of Roger/Jonathan is that it could totally have happened, if you squint. Yeah okay, maybe less plausibly than Roger/Thom but Roger is immoral and evil remember. Apparently. And endearingly handsome and can control people’s minds and has a beard he likes to stroke a lot... yes, I did kind of end this fic picturing him as Derren Brown.

Anyway, I think we miss a lot of the interesting stuff about Roger during LR and it bugs me, because I’d much rather see Roger’s story – and degenerating sanity, despite being able to orchestrate and nearly pull off a plot to destroy the kingdom which begs questions about everyone else’s sanity really, that they let a certifiably crazy person even get that close to winning – than Alanna getting stuck up a mountain. One day I will meta on just how fascinating I find the hints of Roger’s Greater Plan and the sorcerer’s sleep but in the meantime... have a fic.

It’s not the fic about how tempted I am to see if Roger’s time in Carthak coincides with Numair’s either (I’m about 90% sure it does or could be finagled to). That’s for another day.

AN2: Thanks to Hungry Lucy for the title when I had none.
