Because taking out stationary objects at 100+mph is FUN~!
Who: Kazu ([info]heisspeedracer) & Heero ([info]omae_o_korosu)
What: Kazu's attempting to teach Heero how to use ATs... break out the protective gear and first aid kit.
When: Following this thread.
Where: Outside, around, into walls, over people, wherever the road may lead.
Warnings: TBA

He stared at the screen for a few moments before closing the laptop and setting it aside. What had he just gotten himself into? Piloting a Gundam, where you were surrounded by metal and protected from the outside by layers of Gundanium was one thing. Motorized skates, where there was nothing at all separating you from walls, railings, stairs, pavement, and other hazards, were something else entirely. Unfortunately, the vague description Kazu had given was enough to rouse the tech geek in him -he wanted to know what they were, see them for himself, get his hands on them, take them apart, and modify them to death.

...if he didn't kill himself trying to learn how to skate in the first place. It wasn't something a soldier needed to learn, so it hadn't been included in his training, but it couldn't be that hard, right?

Should the ATs (as everyone seemed to call them) prove interesting enough and not a cheap excuse for strapping wheels to shoes, then this endeavour would have been worthwhile. Perhaps this would be a good way to fend off the boredom that Duo insisted the place was plagued by. Sitting on the windowsill, legs dangling outside, Heero waited for the blond to show up.

It was funny - he'd been living in the city for, what, a week or so? And... he still managed to get lost when he was skating. Probably had to do with all the alleys, or something equally not-very-puzzling as that. He was going to ignore the way shops moved every so often; his job stayed in once place, and his apartment stayed in one place, so it didn't concern him. If the zombie-people were so baad at keeping work high, that was their problem.

What wasn't a problem was getting extra Air Trecks. The things sold for what he figured was only a buck-- and before, it'd cost half of his sister's monthly salary and his life savings. Jeeze, but death had its higher points...

... Which the Yuy fellow seemed to take advantage of, if the way he was sitting on a window ledge was anything to go for. ATs weren't that easy to handle, but he'd been using them almost non-stop since his arrival in the city; coasting up to the Hotel's wall, a black pair of 'skates over his shoulder, Kazu had to actually push his hat up a bit to see the guy he was looking for.

"Hey!" An attention-grabbing yell, nothing more. "Yuy-san, right? You comin' down here?"

The voice below made him lean forward to see the speaker, hands gripping the ledge to keep from falling out of the window. It felt weird to hear his name with honorifics attached; he didn't deserve them -the name's original owner had, but not him. If this guy insisted on calling him that, he'd have to make sure to correct him.

At least Kazu had remembered not to stand directly under the window...

With a practiced ease, Heero pushed himself away from the ledge and jumped to the ground below, rather grateful he was only one floor up and not more than that. His track record with landings from higher elevations wasn't so good and he didn't want to start this off by having to fix a broken arm or leg. "Better?"

His gaze flitted first to the skates Kazu wore then the ones he carried. So that's what they looked like, huh? Nothing special about them really, though he could see where they'd require a lot of work to maintain a motor small yet strong enough to power them, but they looked a little more bulky than he'd initially thought. This wouldn't be hard at all!

When Heero had jumped, Mikura had yelped - it was a reflex, really, from all those times Ikki had leaped from the bridge into the water of their river with him swimming right below. Other than that, it was strange seeing someone without ATs jumping from a window - first story or not.

"... Yeah, thanks," Kazu said with some hesitance, but not too much; he was too busy slinging the over his shoulder and holding them out for the other to take. "Hope you don't mind black. It was either that or pink, and... You're not a pink guy, right?"

Maybe, if he still wasn't a bit nervous about the whole 'death' rule, he'd have given the guy the pink ones -- that would have been funny. ... Then again, Yuy wasn't that bad, so Kazu figured he was pretty much making up excuses to his actions again. Ah well. If someone who acted - looked - like Heero ended up being like Aeon, Kazu would eat his ha--- hoodie.

"Not particularly," Heero replied, taking the the offered skates -they were heavier than they looked- and fixing Kazu with a wary stare, "I've never done this before." The weight of those things, coupled with his inexperience, told him he wasn't going to walk back inside without having to bandage at least one or two cuts. He didn't even know how to put them on.

Yeah, this "acting normal" stuff was a lot harder than it looked.

...and why did Kazu look like he was dressed to rob a bank?

.... He didn't like that look. At all. Keeping his inward cringe inward, Kazu hummed for a second, before finally thinking of something to say. "Alright. Have you... ridden a bike, at least?" Explaining balance wasn't something Mikura was cut out for - and, honestly, ATs didn't really need that much balance, but it was better for him to get an idea of what to compare it to.

Wait a second. He didn't know anything about skates? So that would mean... "You can put them on like shoes, only -- it's a bit tougher. Just. Don't try to walk when you've got 'em on, maybe you'll want to sit down, too, 'cause they're on lock and you'll probably fall flat on your face." Hey, he wasn't going to beat around the bush with this. He, himself, had wobbled too much the first time to want to put someone else through that.

Of course, he could've unlocked them, but then... He had a feeling Heero would kick the motor into action and go speeding into oblivion without any control. That happened to newbies, right?

He cocked his head slightly, lowering his gaze to the skates on Kazu's feet, "No, but I'm assuming they require balance, and if you're trying to get me killed, it won't work. I have bad luck when it comes to dying." This was sounding more and more complicated by the minute.

Okay... first step was putting them on. At least he'd had the sense enough to run around in socks today; he wouldn't have to throw his shoes through the window to get them back in his room. He should have taken Kazu's advice and sat down to put them on. The first one went on with a minimal amount of fumbling. The second saw him first trying to balance on one foot while standing on something he wasn't used to, then on the ground when he managed to throw his balance off and fall over. How the hell did people DO this?

After wrestling with the second one a bit as well as fighting with gravity and a higher step than he was used to, Heero managed to get to his feet, glaring daggers at the skates. Had Dr. J been there, he'd have put the skates through the man's head for neglecting to train him for something like this. Wasn't a soldier supposed to be ready for anything? Well, this was part of that "anything" and he wasn't prepared!

"What? -- Sure, Yuy, whatever you say." At first, Kazu had been somewhat nervous, mostly because of how Yuy had acted in the start - but there had been a bit of admiration, too, as the other managed to get one skate on standing up. Then... he'd tried the other skate, and, predictably, fell flat on his ass.

.....

Needless to say, all anxiety after that was nearly non-existent. It was jut the guy's expression. He'd been a bit frustrated the first time, too, but -- Yuy was acting like a little kid who hadn't gotten the train set for Christmas. Folding his arms and slowly wheeling back a few feet, Mikura barely got his laugh under control and didn't even try not smirking. "Good balance, man, good balance."

What? He was allowed to be smug. ... Right, next step. Scratching his neck, Kazu had to think again; ATs was so natural these days, it was hard to recall what it was like the first time through, besides the annoyance. "... Alright. Air Trecks. First thing you gotta know: they're sensitive, alright? I'm not sure how much that pair's rigged..." He'd been a bit lax on the purchase altogether, really, "... But the motor's bound to kick in the second you make any movement.

"These things can run up walls if you do it correctly. -- Not that you should try right now, but I'm just telling you: this is powerful stuff. And... They don't brake that easily. Actually, you basically have to run into a wall to stop if you really get going, since you don't know the spin-turn, right?"

- Oh, wait, he was supposed to be supportive or something. Whoops. Waving his hand distractedly, Kazu shook his head, looking somewhat helpless. "Really. They can be normal skates, but... that's kinda boring. - You know what? Want to start small or just skip that and go straight to the real stuff?" There. Give Yuy the option.

If he hadn't thought he'd fall over again, he'd have kicked the blond. Of all the times to leave the gun in the room! No, he wasn't backing out of this; he wouldn't let himself back out.

The moment Kazu started the technical talk, he had his full attention. This was worse than leaving amateurs to build a mobile suit. This was putting his life into the hands of a speedy deathtrap on wheels that could wrap him around a tree or plant him in a wall. And not only did people willingly do this, they did it and survived. "...so aside from hitting a wall, how do you stop? I want to know how not to end up typing about how life is grand with sparkles and hearts, and skip anything that's pointless."

"Uuuh..." Pause. Think. Kazu wasn't as slow as most people liked to note - he just took so long preparing his answers, and his vocabulary wasn't quite the best out there, the people tended to move onto the next person before he could talk. So it was a bit odd to realize he had to direct, and he had to direct quickly, least Yuy decide to unlock the breaks and just roll off by himself. Damn responsiblity.

"... Most people use the spin-turn. S'where you have to... spin and face the other way, which stops the wheels. But -- it's kind of hard to pull off. Otherwise... There's always just letting the wheels run out of motion. Y'know, just not lean forward, or grab a rail at a speed where you won't tear off your hands. Gotta get slow before pulling it off, either way."

Yeeep, that about covered that, sortakindanotreally. "Have you ever ridden a bike?"

So in other words, aim for something that wouldn't kill him if he slammed into it. Gotcha. Or, at the very least, hope he was strong enough to keep from losing limbs.

"A motorcycle once or twice..." he replied cautiously. "This is starting to sound less like something one would do for 'fun' and more like a warped form of natural selection." Instructions were important and could mean the difference between survival and death, but he wanted to see what the ATs were capable of, safety be damned. Heero hadn't managed to kill himself so far, so what was tempting fate one more time?

"When does this get interesting?"

Now, Kazu didn't have to hold back the somewhat know-it-all grin that covered his face. Good. So, weird words or not, Yuy was pretty normal - no one wanted to hang around the boring, explaining part long, and, really, if things got bad, he could always chase the other down and stop him the old-fashioned way. ATs weren't ATs without a few bruises.

"Gets interesting..." Mikura started, lifting one foot and pointing to the catch on his own skate that held the lock in place, "When you flip this thing and... push off.

"All you gotta do to get going is stay on your feet and -- push sideways. Good luck, Yuy-san." Annnd, ok, there might have been a bit of a laugh in that last sentence, but whatever.

That was it? Just flip a switch and push sideways? ...and why did he have the sinking suspicion that there was something else that Kazu wasn't saying? The wary glare was back, riveted on Mikura as he reached to flip the lock on the right skate. If this cocky bastard could do it, then so could he.

Had Heero known the motors would accelerate based on how much force was behind that push, he'd have taken it easy to get used to them. Instead, all he could think of was how badly he wanted to wipe that grin off Kazu's face and his right foot hit the ground hard as he shifted his weight to release the catch on the left. His initial reaction to the the heavier-than-what-he-was-used-to impact was probably the worst thing he could've done, pushing his weight onto that leg to keep from losing his balance... and winding up right back on the ground when that leg slipped and was abruptly jerked out from underneath him.

Gritting his teeth, Heero shot another glare at Kazu and pushed himself to his feet, experimentally kicking at the ground while keeping his weight centered on the still-locked left skate. "Informing me of the correlation between the initiation of the propulsion system and the amount of force exerted by the user would have been nice," he snapped, eyes narrowing sharply. While on the surface, he was annoyed by that missing bit of information, inside he absolutely giddy -- this would provide enough of a challenge to keep him occupied for a while and he wanted to see what he could do to adjust them to his own liking.

Kazu was creating a monster.

You know, for a giant-robot-pilot-slash-engineer, Heero ended up on his face or ass a lot. Not that Kazu could blame the guy; but it had been his own fault, and the teenager wasn't one to protect another guy from his own actions. "Hey, don't blame this on me. You shouldn't of even tried, what with have your other skate locked~"

And, ok, maybe he was going a bit farther than just 'leaving another to their own devices,' but he'd never seen someone else first start out Air Trecks. Onigiri had been the only other relative newbie, and they were about on the same level, all things considered.

"I told you - the motors are sensitive. And it'll take you a few weeks to build 'em up... There's a memory chip inside or something... But, anyway, sit down this time, huh?"

This time, he played it safe and took the blond's advice, sitting down against the wall to unlock the skates. "Trial by fire," he replied in a flat tone. "I would rather fall a few times than get it right on the first try. Provides more incentive to learn so that it doesn't happen again." Well, that and the only person he could possibly kill while falling was himself, not an entire city block.

Using the wall for leverage, he was able to stand without incident this time. There was only one thing he was really concerned about though -- the right femur which had been broken during his second encounter with Duo. He'd never given it the chance to heal properly; because of that, there was a possibility that the bone wasn't as strong as it should be, and if it were damaged, he'd be forced to sit around to wait for it to mend itself. Gingerly transferring all of his weight to that leg, Heero waited for the telltale crunch of bone collapsing.

Nothing. Possible problem averted. He was ready to try again, now that he had an idea behind the mechanics of it... just treat it like any other mission he'd carried out. An experimental push away from the wall saw him wobbling a bit but staying on his feet -it was a start! "Besides getting well acquainted with the ground, what's next?"

"Running." Kazu said plainly, because, honestly, there was nothing more to say. He adjusted his hat in habit, wondering vaguely what the slow leg-shifting Yuy did was about but not thinking too hard on it; the possibility to really run was coming up, and, like the good little Storm Rider he was turning into, that was infinitely more important than minor details like someone doing some weird foot dance.

Clapping his hands together in emphasis, Mikura started coasting away from the other, watching somewhat closely. "Push sideways without much force, try not to fall down, and you'll get the hang of it on your own." Like hell he was going to show another teenager the step-by-step progress -- besides, Heero didn't look like someone who wanted to be taken by the arm and shown around.

Hopefully, the guy wasn't a sensitive soul and Kazu wouldn't have to worry about a gang showing up on his doorstep if he fell over while going five mph.

A few more experimental attempts while varying the force behind each and Heero was starting to get used to it. It was a little life moving around in space -too much and you'd go flying, not enough and you wouldn't go anywhere, just right and you'd be fine. The trick was figuring out what that 'right amount' was.

There was no way he was going to let Kazu lead him by the hand though. If he was going to crash into a wall, then he'd crash into a wall... then get up and try again. There was only so much learning that could come from reading and watching; the rest had to come from doing.

The childlike excitement was back. Why couldn't they have these at home? "Alright, let's see what they can do." He was used to flying between the Colonies and Earth, though it was always inside a shuttle. Now, he wanted to see what it was like to 'fly' without the use of metallic wings.

If his mental map was correct, there would be a subway tunnel coming up on their left - a perfect place, really, as the train mysteriously never seemed to show up when he was down there, and there wasn't any water Heero could fall into and drown, because the dunce couldn't swim. Kazu didn't know if he couldn't swim, really, but the risk wasn't worth it.

Another full-faced grin. "A'right, I hear you. C'mon." And off Mikura was, not quite as fast he could go (he wanted Heero to follow, after all) but enough to utterly throw off the other's earlier... 'tests,' or whatever those short spursts of running were supposed to be.
