Pity and Fear [Active]
Who: Asuka ([info]antabaka) and Shinji ([info]third_child)
What: Asuka needs to color this bitch :/
Where: The lobby of the hotel and then her room.
When: Now! Ooo!
Rating: ROTF PROBABLY AT LEAST PG-13. Asuka has a potty mouth.

Asuka twirled a piece of her hair as she sat near one of the windows of the lobby. Her head was pressed gently against the glass as she watched the storm brewing outside, waiting silently for Shinji's arrival in the hotel, knowing full well that he was not going to be pleased with what she was going to do to him. The memories had been such a painful reminder of how much she'd hated her life, how much she'd hated being alive, and she wondered shortly after Cloud had left her in her room, tears streaming silently down her face as she stared at the wall opposite of her bed whether or not she had been better off ignorant - better of black and white, unaware of the cruelties, the guilt, and the pain of life outside of a little box. Had Cloud really done her a favor pulling back to this world? She couldn't even tell anymore.

So why was she so desperate to bring Shinji back? She wondered briefly whether or not she should simply tell him to forget it, to turn around and go back home - or to at least just stay in her room until the storm passed. She wondered if he was better off forgetting all about Unit 01, Angels, even about his father. He would be forever happy as a carbon copy of ignorant bliss, wouldn't he? Her eyes watered at the thought and she knew full well that that wasn't an option. He needed to remember. He needed to be himself. He needed to experience life, no matter how painful it may have been to do so.

Or perhaps she just wanted him to remember her. Perhaps she was being selfish. It didn't matter anymore - all she knew was it was something she had to do. Something that would make things right somehow.

Pulling herself away from the window, she crossed her arms over her chest, her jaw tight. She pushed the tears that had formed in her eyes away angrily with her hand. She'd promised herself once she would never cry again - never show that kind of weakness. Yet Cloud had caused her to remember and caused her to sob. She wasn't going to do it again. Not if she had a say in it.

"Where the hell is that boy when you need him?" She muttered. Shinji was apparently taking too long for her tastes.

Shinji jumped a bit - he really wasn't used to this display of negative emotion - as confused as he'd never been before. Not just by her reaction, but by her words. "Third? Second child of whom?" Do I know your parents?, he decided to keep the last part to himself. He feared she would only be even more aggravated by his questions. But he couldn't help it. She was making no sense!

"I-" He sighed, trying to keep himself (or rather, her) calm. "Very well. My apologies." He nodded.

She rolled her eyes, grabbing his arm and pulling him along to the elevator at the pace she wished to currently travel. "You'll get it later. Just stop being a pain and come on." When they got inside, she pressed the button for her floor, crossing her arms and leaning back against the wall as she waited for the doors to open again.

Pausing, she looked at him curiously; "So you don't remember a thing?"

"Oh!" was the only sound that came out of Shinji's mouth as he was pulled by the annoyed redhead. He wasn't sure why he was letting her push and pull him around, but he figured it was the years of gentleman behavior that had become a part of his education and being. He wouldn't dare to fight against a woman.

Especially against this woman. But why? What was so different about her- besides her hair color and temperamental mood.

Before he knew what hit him, he was standing in the middle of the elevator, staring at the reflective doors, trying to keep his cool as he compared his gray tones to the burst of colors covering every inch of the girl's body. This was such a queer situation, and his mind kept asking him how he'd gotten into it more and more.

He turned his head to her. Every single colored person that had talked to him had told him he'd 'remember'. But remember what? He remembered his entire life perfectly. His childhood, his teenage days, when he'd met the girl that would become his wife and share the rest of her life with him. What else was there to remember??

"..." He gazed at her for a while. "I remember everything there is to remember." He turned away, again.

She watched him carefully, her eyes practically tearing into him as she waited for an answer. He was clearly confused by her question - perhaps he had been asked it before, she wouldn't know. She hadn't exactly stalked him these past few weeks to find out. Her jaw was tight at his answer. Everything there is to remember, huh? Oh, she doubted that. She let out a sarcastic and very unamused chuckle, pushing herself forward so that she was a little closer to him.

"Do you now?" It came out almost as a bit of a harsh purr instead of an honest question. She slipped passed him, looking at the elevator buttons, and finally pressing the emergency stop with her thumb. The cart came to a screeching halt as she turned to look at Shinji. Her room had Sakura in it - and she wasn't about to let the girl watch something this important. She was her friend, yes, but there was so much she kept hidden from her. So much of her life that she hadn't informed her of. And she wasn't about to even risk the thought of Shinji spilling it in front of her.

She pressing her finger roughly into his shoulder, "Then tell me, Shinji. What do you remember about me?"

Shinji's eyes widened, just a little bit. His body's position shifted entirely just to keep him balanced, as the elevator's halt had surprised him that much. "What are you-!" He almost allowed himself to yell at Asuka. He'd just caught the biggest scare of his life! Had she no consideration for other people??

He would have brought up the nerve to scold at her, even if just a little bit, but was immediately interrupted by her. Somehow, her anger and assertiveness... while it was definitely intimidating, he somehow knew that it wasn't to be taken too seriously. He could sense - or he just knew - that there was a much deeper anger in her voice, a sense of sadness that had turned to rage a long time ago.

"What do I remember about you?" He repeated, a little indignant. "As far as I know, I have never seen you before in my entire life!" He would immediately swallow his words, though, because the sudden flash of colors and sensation of a strong wind blowing on him suddenly appeared before him. He could remember the red hair, the yellow dress, the arrogant look on the girl's face. The wind that blew up her skirt in the worst way possible and the delivery of slaps across the nearest faces that ensued.

Shinji brought his hand up to his cheek, eyes widened, confused, surprised, fearful and... blue.

He looked down, hand still on his cheek. "W- what was that?"

She could have jumped for joy at the sight of blue that was now looking at her, they wide and fearful expression, the obvious evidence of a memory left behind on his face. She would have smiled, would have hugged him, but she was far too shut off for all that. No - if she were to get excited over the pain he might start to remember, she would only feel guilt for it. She offered him a smirk, her hand to going up to his cheek for a moment, before she lowered it and backed up some, her arms folded.

"Guess you don't remember everything after all, huh?" She clicked her tongue, leaning against the wall and acting as though she wasn't entirely sure what to ask next, though she had so many questions to pry him with pouring through her mind. "So you do remember me, huh, Third Child? Me, you... Misato-san... Kaji-san... Unit 01 and 02... NERV... Maybe even the Fifth? Nagisa? I know Kaworu and yourself have some deep history going on, don't you?" She tilted her head, looking to him, brow arched.

"Or do you forget all of that too?"

The world and sounds and feelings and visions zooming past his mind were much too overwhelming for him to process what was going on. Even Asuka's words, so close to him, so clear and articulate, fell on deaf ears. All that existed was the sight that he couldn't quite see; everything was a blur.

Seconds later, all those somewhat familiar terms were finally being heard. He repeated each and every one of them he could remember at the moment, wondering whether he was completely lost or trying to remember. All he could remember right now, though, was the girl's red hair and yellow dress. The enormous ship they were standing on, and that strange, massive red mechanical shape that the girl in the yellow dress had been so proud to show him. What the heck was it? He'd never even imagined anything like it before, much less seen one so up close he could remember every single detail of its armor! And the creature that had started attacking them, the girl's hurry to drag him along and help her fight it, the knowledge both possessed to pilot this strange machine, the stress that it had caused, the danger, the responsibility, the voice of their commander, the panic and simultaneous determination building up inside him as she and the girl pulled something amazing off countless feet underwater.

"What's going on??" His voice was definitely alarmed, and now both hands were on his face, as if trying to keep something inside, controlled. He closed his eyes. It was painful. It was so unimaginable, all those strange things that would have never even been considered science-fiction where he had come from. They were that surreal.

"I..." He opened his eyes again. He could feel sweat on his forehead. "I need to get out of here." His hand reached out for the elevator's door. Then, he turned to the buttons, trying to press all of them. "I should have never agreed to this. I need to get out of here!!" He banged on the elevator's wall. "Please, let me get out of here!!!"

She watched him, wanted to grab him, wanted to hold him and tell him it was okay. Her eyes were stinging but she let nothing through. His panic, his fear, it was all hitting too close to home. Perhaps she should have waited for just a few days, let herself recover and -- She shook those thoughts from her head, knowing they were selfish and not to mention useless now. She cringed at the banging, pinching her nose before grabbing him away from the wall and shoving him so that he would stop the racket that had begun to give her a headache.

"STOP IT! You're going to remember if we have to stay in this fucking elevator all day, you hear me?! COME ON, SHINJI." She wasn't sure how else to do this but shove it in his face the way the Gundum, so much like her Unit 02, was shoved in hers. "Remember it! Remember the Angels. Remember the mission that made you whine so fucking often!" She was almost snarling at him, daring him to try and fight her on it, daring him to continue forgetting.

Leaning down, she kept her eyes locked on his, though they were narrow and bitter, almost as though she blamed him for all of this - blamed him for forgetting her. For forgetting the one thing that had kept her connected to the world they'd come from. "You can't forget this. You can't forget the Evas! You can't forget our life. You can't forget... You cen't..." She swallowed roughly, her eyes shutting tight, before she shouted, "You can't forget ME! I ... I NEED YOU HERE, SHINJI. Can't you get that?!

I... I need you..."

At first, all Shinji could do was struggle and fight, his entire body shaking. It was as if it had accumulated more energy and pressure than it could ever have handled, though it was all in his mind. He was gritting his teeth, shutting his eyes tightly, fisting the elevator's walls. He couldn't fight against Asuka's strength, however, pulling him away and making him face her. His eyes were tired, begging for some mercy, anything that would make the invasion and replacement of memories stop.

It was so heavy, the feelings he'd had, the dark places he'd been, the thoughts that had weighed him down and made him exist for nothing but other peoples' acknowledgment of that same existence.

His hair was brown. His skin's gray color was starting to fade. "It's so much... it's so much..." He muttered to himself. Every moment he'd remembered about Asuka pointed to the exact opposite of what she was saying. He stared at her. He saw her yelling at him, leaving him behind, telling him all the things she didn't like about him.

"You need me...?" Why had she put up such a tough facade, if only to prove later how fragile she was? He had always known that her tough and assertive attitude was nothing but fake, but he would have never acted up on it.

Would he?

He lifted his hand, trembling. His fingers rested on her neck, softly. The memories had stopped coming, but there were still many blank spaces in his mind. He was tired, and cold, his mind was overloaded, he was in shock, had just had a panic attack and every inch of his body was wet. He was only human, and a human could only handle so much.

"Help me."

He passed out.

Asuka watched as the gray slowly faded and the colorful, shaking, and pathetic Shinji she knew came forward. She watched him with relief and pain, tensing at his touch and swallowing so hard that she thought she would push her heart down to her stomach. She had given him everything just then - her weakness, her honesty, the proof of her friendship. Yet, it would be no surprise that when he awoke, she would be just like her old self - though perhaps a bit more kind then normal and even sympathetic of what he'd been through.

When he'd passed out, she laid him gently on the floor, going to the elevator and pressing another button to make it move again. Seconds later, it dinged on her floor, the doors opening as she pulled Shinji up, sinking some under his weight as she dragged him to her room. She would let him get up and go to his own later - she wasn't about to go on a hunt for his door and plop him in front of Kaworu after everything she'd just done.

Pushing her door open, she walked him to her bed, flopping him down on top and straightening him out some as she looked down at him, her face lacking any emotion except for perhaps exhaustion.

"... Ugh... So useless," she muttered, huffing off to go see if the closet would supply her with some smelling salts.

He couldn't remember exactly what he'd dreamed about- if it even had been a dream. Everything he could place in his mind was blurry, in pieces, time jumping back and forth as events took place. But it was where it should be. He was still overwhelmed and cold and wet, but anything else had been washed away.

Shinji slowly opened his eyes.

A strange ceiling.

Was he in his world, or... in the building? He remembered the curse and the surreal knowledge that he had actually been someone else... and it was something he couldn't bring himself to wrap his head around. He'd had a different person inside his body and now he was gone. Shinji Ikari, the pitiful little pathetic Unit 01 pilot had returned.

He felt relieved, though. It was much like he'd finally had a long night's sleep after what seemed to be an exhausting lifetime of constant perfection and normalcy.

And he could finally assimilate everything that other 'colored' people had told him, now. Their words made complete sense and all it took for him to remember was a panic attack and a black out.

Not to mention-

"Asuka."

He muttered, as he heard some movement and an all-too familiar voice muttering complaints.

Asuka had been busy muttering to herself as she opened and reopened the closet, her eyes shut tight each time in hopes that something would show up, but it continued to be empty, as though mocking her. She grumbled, kicking the door in frustration. "Stupid closet, do you ever give me anything I need? You supply me with a bat to go against vampires, no food, and no salts. What the hell are you good for besides clothes?"

It was then that she noted her name, quieting and turning to look over her shoulder at the now awake Shinji. Her mouth scrunched in thought, before she spun around and walked back towards him, the useless closet now no in need anymore. She knelt by his bed, quickly placing her hand rather roughly against his forehead to see if he had any lingering affects from his panic attack, and nodded in satisfaction as she let it fall back to her side.

"About time, baka. I was getting annoyed by this Miss stuff. Your polite enough when you're your own stupid self. It's just creepy when it's increased." She tilted her head as she looked down at him, her eyes not nearly as hard they usually were, as though she were letting a bit of the affection she felt towards him to slip through.

Clearing her throat, she pushed herself up and sat on the edge of the bed, looking at the wall opposite them. "Feel any better?"

Shinji did nothing but gaze. He watched her reaction as she noticed he'd come back to his senses, noticed how her hair flowed behind her whenever she walked around, looked into her eyes, seeing that strange little bit of affection slip through like he never imagined she would. His lips were parted, his eyes were tired and soft, but awake just enough to understand... things.

Asuka had talked so many times, hinted that there had been more to their relationship than Shinji ever got the chance to experience. In this moment, for reasons he would forget, Shinji wanted to know what it had been like to have her by his side all the time, cynicisms aside. He would blame it on his exhaustion, on that numbing sensation of someone who just woke up and... felt different.

Could it be that the other 'him' hadn't quite left him, after all? Yeah, that was probably it. No it wasn't.

He knew he had passed out in the elevator. If he was in her room now, then... Asuka had gone through the trouble of getting him here. That was more than he could have thanked her for. She actually...

He ignored the hurtful words that Asuka shot at him, so obviously trying to disguise whatever sensation of worry she had allowed him to see.

All he knew was that he'd raised his hand and hesitated. Could he- would she allow him to- no, she'd slap it away and yell at him, asking him what the hell he thought he was doing. But he still reached his intention, in the end, and he had curled his fingers around Asuka's arm.

"...Thank you." He muttered, lowering his eyes.

Asuka had paused when she felt Shinji's hand on her arm, her eyes immediately flickering to it. She stared, unsure of what to do. She'd gotten so used to going back to her old habits of strength and irritation that she'd completely forgotten what it had been like in the end - after she'd gotten over his initial reaction, after things had calmed down and her mind had felt a little less broken. She hadn't jumped away from his touch in so long and it almost felt strange and foreign to her at this point. She wasn't sure how to handle it, the usual disregard for his affection seeming so... ill placed at the moment after everything he had been through.

Swallowing roughly, she nodded, looking away from him and eventually pulling her arm away to wrap it around herself. She hugged her torso in discomfort, looking off in the distance, wondering just why it was that she had been able to jog his memory, make him come back. It had to be because no one else had tried. That was it. He couldn't think of any other logical reason.

"Anta baka?" She said in a more teasing tone - her usual phrase that she always directed at him in anger was meant almost more affectionately in that moment. "Like I'd just leave you looking like more of a fool then usual." She gave him a usual, confident smirk, before standing and walking over towards the wall so she could lean against it, looking at the door for a moment before averting her eyes to the floor.

"I um... I imagine Nagisa is wondering where you are at this point," she said finally, not wanting him to leave but not wanting to risk the thought of Sakura finding them either. She shuffled some on her feet, glancing over her shoulder at him for a moment, carefully, as though debating asking him to stay with her. It would be ridiculous - she didn't need to prove that she needed him as much as she said she'd had. She'd just said it to get him back to normal, right?

She could pretend at least. Or at least hope that he didn't even remember it, which was the preferred choice. She wasn't in a very good place for lying.

Shinji understood completely when he felt Asuka pulling away from his touch. He actually wasn't hurt by the sensation of discomfort that rejected his attempt at a safe display of affection, he would never be. Asuka's shell had been lifted up back in the elevator (hadn't it? Or was it all just a smart way to reach into Shinji and bring him back? She'd always known about his hidden attraction to h-) and it was back on, now.

He smiled, though. He wasn't sure why. If somebody asked him why the hell he had decided to smile when his memories of pain and loneliness and struggle had been slapped back into the back of his mind, he would just answer with the same expression. He didn't mind, because he was away from them, now. He was away from his world, away from all the responsibilities that had kept him going and simultaneously made him want to give up, but he had Asuka here, and she had taken care of him and she had helped him over and over again.

Then the word 'Nagisa' rang in his ears. Kaworu. He was probably worried sick, and Shinji half-wished Asuka hadn't mentioned his name. It made his heart speed up, and not in a good way. He turned his head away and sat up.

"Oh, y-yeah." He brought his hand up to his head, closing his eyes. A sudden dizziness had hit him, only normal after he'd been lying down for so long and had suddenly lifted his head. Shinji stayed in silence for a bit, waiting for it to go away. Then he looked back at the red haired girl who was staring back at him with mixed feelings in her eyes.

"I'm sorry for putting you through all this trouble, I didn't mean to..." He hesitated, looking down. Then back up. "I'm sorry." He put his feet on the floor and his hands on the mattress, pushing himself up.

Asuka shook her head gently, her eyes leaving his finally and looking towards the door again. She didn't know why she felt such a discomfort at the thought of him running to the Fifth Child to show him he was alright. After having helped him out of such a hard place, she felt almost ... clingy towards their relationship, as she used to when they were the only two left, but she couldn't bring herself to show it anymore then she ever had. She clicked her tongue some, walking over to him when he pushed himself up and tilting her head as she looked him over.

"No need for apologies. I wouldn't have helped you if I didn't want to." It was the closest she got to saying she cared - the closest she was going to get, maybe. She pursed her lips quietly, looking at the floor and trying her best to keep her face expressionless, but she felt herself failing at the stoicism she was so often good at. Clearing her throat, she slumped herself on to the bed, fiddling with her hands.

She felt like a silly girl. A foolish one. For once, she wanted to call herself pathetic rather then projecting it on to the boy in front of her.

"Just um... just make sure to check in, ok? You look pretty weak. Not that that's abnormal," she added the last part in with as much of her usual cynical tone as she could, but it was relatively weak. "I don't want to think you've gone and died or something."

Shinji watched her and flinched, just a little, showing his discomfort with the atmosphere that had settled since... well, since Asuka became aware of his consciousness. Truth was Shinji didn't want to go. It seemed as if he hadn't seen the girl in the longest time, and this fact wasn't as present when he thought about Kaworu. He spent almost his entire days with him, and now felt horrible for having not dedicated more of his time to the girl that seemed to have helped him over and over again since she had stepped foot into the Hotel.

He felt guilty, but...

Shinji looked down, heavily. He didn't want to say anything, that would only make things weird, but at the same time he wished he could stay and talk. Live a little of the relationship they had lost. He couldn't explain it, but- they had lived together, once, and that had stopped when Asuka had gone under a coma. Now she was back and they were separated. It also reminded him of how much he missed Misato and her outrageous behavior.

"I guess I'll..." He brought his hand up to his hair, scratching it awkwardly. "I'll be going now." He straightened back up, facing her again. He somehow managed to pull out a fake smile. "Thank you for everything. And, uhm, sorry for freaking you out, I guess." That was stupid. He shouldn't have said that.

He stepped over to the door, walking by her with a lowered head. His fingers were still curled around the doorknob inside when he stood still for a moment, thinking. He turned around, blushing.

"Hey..." He closed and opened his mouth again, scratching the back of his head, unable to look at Asuka in her eyes. "Uhm. I'm a little hungry." Don't stutter. Don't stutter. "W-wanna..." Dammit! "Go grab something to eat? Or something?"

Asuka nodded gently as he got up to move, not watching him and trying to keep herself quiet. She was getting rather used to people leaving - she had built up that wall for a reason, right? So Shinji always returning to Kaworu didn't affect her. Nope. Not in the least. Or she at least liked to play it off that way. Her throat was tight, but you wouldn't be able to tell that just by looking into her face, and she was pretty sure that once he was gone and out of hearing distance, she would start to throw stuff at the door - most likely Sakura's stuff, because like hell she would break her own.

But then he stopped. He stayed. He asked her to do things. She looked up at him, brow arched lightly in disbelief. She almost looked irritated at him for having surprised her, though it wasn't a change for her to look that way at Shinji in any way what-so-ever. Perhaps she was too hard on him - tch, that thought was brief and pushed away because she knew that she was and she wasn't going to change it. If Shinji grew a back bone, it wouldn't be a problem. She was almost trying to make him do so - wanting him to snap back. The kid was such a pathetic push over.

"Hn." She scrunched her mouth, the words Anta baka?! on the tip of her tongue, ready to tell him off and make him just go back to his stupid roommate and stop trying to be so friendly with her, but it wasn't coming out. Stupid boy. Why did he have to make her want to spend time with him? She'd been getting over this - hanging out with other people! Of course, given the awkward feelings that now were lingering between her and Cloud due to the last curse, she had practically lost her replacement Kaji, which led her to feel even more bitter and lonely then before. It was becoming a pattern to lose people. Was she really going to push someone away that was trying to reach out to her?

"... Don't be an idiot."

Apparently.

Shinji's eyes watched her expectantly, afraid of what would come out of her mouth. If having her snap at you immediately was bad enough, watching her remain silent in thought was even more nerve-wrecking. It was impossible to tell what was going on in her mind...

Then her answer. Shinji almost sighed, but looked away with a sad half-smile, instead. He guessed he shouldn't have expected anything else from her. She just wouldn't ever let that hard shell of hers down, would she?

"... y-yeah. Sorry, I guess I shouldn't have-... I should go now." He slowly turned his back, hesitating a bit, but eventually reaching for the doorknob and turning it, stepping out of the room, looking back to wave weakly.
