Unlikely Hostesses
On Friday evening, the weather in Chicago was nice enough to open the windows. The third floor apartment where Rhiannon and Purity lived on Oakwood Avenue was spotless, for a change. They propped open the doors and music filtered down the stairs and out onto the sidewalk, which prompted the only other tenant -- Donald the awkward software guy -- to leave and visit a relative for the night.

Inside 3C, the furniture was old but comfortable, the floor carpeted, and the walls painted in a medley of colors. The air smelled richly of incense. The couch and armchair had been dragged closer to the television, where Purity hooked up a favorite gaming system. On the back half of the living room, there were a card table and chairs, and a few well-used sets of playing cards and poker chips waiting.

The kitchen counter was divided into sections for drinks and snacks. There were a couple of barstools bought from a garage sale.

Most of the evidence of their extracurriculars (like stakes and magical supplies) had been put in their bedrooms in the back of the apartment.

Avery couldn't remember the last time he had been to a party at someone's house. Fourteen years old, maybe? He didn't count the dinner parties of family friends or his parents' colleagues. But his mother had taught him, at a young age, to always bring something. With the brown carry-out bag in one hand, he rapped on the door. It wasn't like in movies, where the door was flung wide open and strangers bounded in with kegs and car loads of people. For that, he was eternally grateful.

Waiting for someone to answer, he glanced down at his shirt, brushing off a stray dead leaf. The vampire was wearing a black Beatles t-shirt underneath a dark blue zippered hoodie, worn-jeans with slight holes in the knees and sneakers. After a minute or two, he gave a second, louder staccato knock.

Purity had never thrown a party with anyone before, the fact that she knew the people arriving was a huge step for the witch. Perhaps that was why she was grinning already, after hooking up the X Box, she got to her feet and frowned, was that someone knocking? Surely Donald hadn't called the cops for disturbing the peace.

Walking towards the doors, the witch frowned and pulled it open, "Avery! Hey, the door stop must have shifted and shut the door, sorry, come on in." Purity pushed the doors back open, kicking the wooden stopper under it to hold it in place. The way she saw it, an open door was a nicer invitation than standing outside, although she could see it from Avery's point of view. "Now you can come and go as you please." The witch grinned slightly, waving her arm at the vampire as she walked inside where the music was louder. "This is our home, and this..." Purity ducked into the kitchen and pointed to Rhiannon, "Is my friend, and the reason I'm in Chicago. Rhiannon, this is Avery, our first guest."

Avery grinned and held out the bag. "I wasn't sure what food you'd have, but spinach cheese dip always seems to go over well. Or so commercials have told me." He crossed into the kitchen, following Purity's verbal cue. The vampire gave the other woman a wave. "Hey. Purity's told me a lot about you." He gave her a shy smile, not sure how her stance as a Slayer differed from Faith's, though she had to have been fairly open-minded for him to have been invited in.

"Am I the first one here?"

The other brunette was by the sink, dumping potato chips in a giant, disposable bowl, a clue as to how culinary they weren't. She crinkled up the bag, pressed the pedal on the trash can, and threw it inside.

"Yup. Did I hear spinach dip?" Seemingly unconcerned with the vampire part or his apparent shyness, Rhiannon took the item from him and inspected its contents, which smelled really good. "You read my mind."

She passed it onto the counter, wiped her palms on her pant legs, and reached out a hand to shake. "It's nice to meet you. Don't worry, we don't bring out the stakes in polite company." Her mouth twisted up at the corners.

After the interesting night of meeting and patrolling with Rhiannon's teacher and best friend Juliet was looking forward with interest to meeting more of her friends. If Whistler was anything to go by it could turn into a very interesting evening! She wasn't sure she was ever going to forget her first impression of him, pale ass cheek exposed to Rhiannon and wobbling enthusiastically. Even now she couldn't stop the grin that spread across her face at the memory of the sight.

Arriving at the apartment this night she was carrying two bags, or at least her usual kit bag that carried change of clothes and the various small weapons she'd started to accumulate, and another, a small hamper that Doris had put together for her to bring when she'd said she was going to a small party and wanted to take some food, mainly vegetarian. When she'd come downstairs, ready to leave, Bart was standing at the front door with the hamper, defining a list of contents and accoutrement included inside with his usual expression and tone. "Your beverage of preference are also included," he added, succumbing to a small smile when Juliet thanked him, stretching up on tiptoe to kiss his cheek, something that always left him somewhat flustered, but silently appreciative.

Climbing the stairs to the third floor apartment was done just two at a time this time, the hamper hooked over her arm and bag on her shoulder. When she reached the front door she didn't even hesitate, walking in and calling out to Rhiannon, taking a quick look around and heading for the kitchen.

Connor ended up picking up two pizzas before heading over to Rhiannon's, one vegetarian and one with meat, and he carefully strapped the boxes to the seat of his motorcycle to make sure they'd survive the trip. He'd debated the pros and cons of plates, knowing that his friends were both on a budget and not necessarily naturally given to home-making, but he figured they'd at least have paper towels or something. The Destroyer rounded the final curve before pulling the Honda into the familiar lot, reaching behind him to assure himself the boxes were still on-board.

Helmet tucked under one arm, food under the other, he listened to the noises his thick-soled boots made on the stairs. It probably got pretty quiet around here with only one other tenant, he reflected. The music got louder as he neared the Slayer's door, and he poked his head in briefly before stepping over the threshhold.

"Pizza man," he announced, nodding in Purity and Avery's direction before find a table to set the food down on. Flipping open one lid to remind himself which was which, he picked piece of sausage off of the edge and put it in his mouth. Good, they were still hot. He closed the box to keep the steam from escaping.

"I've kept meaning to run into you," he said to Purity, regarding the witch with a smile. "Better late than never."

"Guess we spoke too soon." Purity grabbed the door frame to the kitchen, leaning backwards to see the young girl calling for Rhiannon. "Hey! Juliet, right? We're in here. Glad you could make it." Waving her arm for Juliet to come join them, Purity vanished back inside the kitchen.

The witch pointed towards the beer in Rhiannon's hand, "So this is how it is, huh? You think just because I live here I'm not entitled to being offered." Grinning, the witch used her hip to bump the Slayer out of the way. Opening the fridge Purity grabbed her own beer.

Hearing Connor arrive, she quickly took out a second, passing the cold beverage to him once he set the pizza's down. "Oh yeah? What can I help you with, other than eating those?" The witch unscrewed her bottle cap, taking a liberal sip before letting out a long breath. The night was just getting started but already she was enjoying it.

Rhiannon hoisted herself onto the little bit of counter that wasn't taken up. She dipped a chip into the vampire's dip, and engaged in a struggle to fish the broken pieces out without touching the rest. "Shit."

She looked at the new arrivals and signaled the younger Slayer to come closer. "Juliet? Connor and Avery." The fragments of chip went into her mouth.

Rhiannon lowered her voice. "Ignore your spider sense tonight," she sucked a bit of cheese from her thumb, "I'll explain later."

Juliet said hi to Purity, remembering the witch from the dinner party thrown by Izzy and Logan before Christmas. She gave the two males a nod and smile as she crossed the kitchen to where Rhiannon was sitting.

Facing Rhiannon she gave her mentor a small puzzled look, but didn't ask anything, a huge effort in itself but figuring from the sensations she was getting on her neck that there was indeed someone there that wasn't 'the norm'. She unconsciously rolled her free shoulder, her kitbag that had been on it when she'd entered the empty living room already dropped in its usual place in the corner of the room.

"Right, then where do you want this then?" she asked, lifting the hamper like it weighted nothing. Inside were containers of finger food, some hot, some cold, all in dises that could be put straight out for serving. "Cook just threw a few things in for me," she continued, pulling out the cooler part that held some bottle of premix lemon, lime and bitters.

Joseph was sat turning a pack of cards over in his hand, splitting the cards apart before sliding them together again until he could masterfully turn them over in his fingers as he shuffled them.

His glass of whiskey sat untouched beside him, the ice slowly beginning to melt into the bottom. He'd left the tequila in the kitchen along with a couple shot glasses he'd been thoughtful enough to bring, just in case.

Joseph took a drag from his cigarette, letting the smoke linger before he breathed it out in shapes of 'O'. He was content to sit right where he was with cards in hand and the sound of the party around him.

He wasn't out to make any money from whatever game came his way.

"Heyyy," she drawled. Rhiannon deposited a few shot glasses and a bottle on the card table, as well as a bowl of snack mix she stole on her way out of the kitchen. She left plenty of room for the cards, keeping everything on the perimeter of the table, so he could deal if he wanted to. "I didn't see you come in."

After a quick kiss to Joseph's temple, and a squeeze of his shoulder, Rhiannon sat down in another chair. "This is Avery." She put a handful of the crunchy snack food in a napkin by her left hand. The bottom of her red cup dripped condensation onto the table. "This is Joseph."

Avery nodded in greeting at the card-holding man. "Hey." He took one of the seats, settling in at the table and impulsively reaching for the bottle. He poured himself a shot, knocking it back and managing to keep a straight face, even though the muted taste was reminiscent of a cleaning solvent. "Do I need money or chips?," he asked them, setting down the empty glass and surveying the contents strewn across the surface.

After eating the slice of pizza she had taken from the box, Purity shifted to scurry across the floor on her knees, her hands sifting through the games piled by the X Box. Selecting one of the racing games, the witch hit the power button and sat back up. Thankful for wireless controllers, she set it down on her thigh while she grabbed her beer, taking a liberal sip as she settled back on the couch.

Flipping through the many car styles and colours, Purity finally picked one that was low to the ground and claimed to have good acceleration and handling. A few more clicks and her car was black with several small silver tribal designs curling up from the bottom like flames. "If anyone wants to race grab a controller." The bottle of beer was set between her knees while she waited.

"OK!"

Connor's appeal was answered with an apparently care-free shrug and ready taking of the pizza slice. Sonya had actually taken a sort of private promise to avoid eating too much of this other household's food, but would still have to watch herself, just in case.

Two main options now presented themselves to the bewinged redhead: She was a fantastic card player and, if money was present, might well stand a good chance of cleaning out, based on her previous history. She had won a fortune in Las Vegas and had literally been employed in the field, on a professional basis, in the sleepy little desert town, not too far from there.

Sonya, however, could be easily distracted by superficial excitement and computer games were right up that proverbial street. She made an elbowing nudge at Connor, directing his attention over there with a point of finger, with her mouth too full of pizza to make an intelligable announcement. Whether or not he decided to trail on by, however, the half-demoness made a bee line directly to there, making a rather admirable swallow, before volunteering herself with an, "I play! I play!"

Either she had played this before or was simply a natural at technical dexterity, because, once taking up a cross-legged position on the couch, fingers busied themselves at lightning speed on the games controller, choosing this option and that. Her own vehicle was in shining red and, of course, was covered in just about every promotional sticker there was.

Because corporate advertising = faster, right?

Take Sonya to a press conference and she was sure to take home as many free pens, refridgerator magnets and other assorted useless crap, as she could handle... The same logic was surely in operation here.

"OK!" She declared. "I are readies! None dare to suck my exhaust!"

Hayden picked up a curry puff and sniffed it. Compared to the bowls of chips and dips, this was an actual hors d' oeuvres, which somebody had to have brought over. After looking around at the people who were piled in the living room and kitchen, he was going to put his money on Juliet, whose house was enormous, from what he saw when dropping off books with the... was that a butler or a doorman? Which was the PC term?

He leaned up on the counter next to Juliet and ate the finger food, then folded his forearms over his ribcage. "I got your email about the books," he said, chewing. "Did you ever get to the one about near-apocalypses?"

Juliet finished swallowing the ricotta and spinach pastizzi and nodded. "Yeah but I'm ending up jumping all over the place, because I was reading some stuff in the Slayer handbook and it referenced stuff in there so I've been sort of back and forth between the two," she admitted to him. "Some of those things though?" She shook her head, just the memories of some of what she'd read sending a shiver up her spine.

"Man, some of that crap is just... full on!" She knew it was probably sounding really naive but Hayden didn't seem to be the sort of guy who was judgemental, or about to make a fool of her for being a little overwhelmed by what she'd been reading.

"This whole reopening of Lincoln Park, do you think that portal thing might reopen? And if it does is it going to be the same as last time?" She still had the underlying niggle about Lincoln Park and what happened there, and the fact that her brother hadn't been seen since that night.

Avery grabbed a beer and popped it open, taking a seat on one of the stools and watching the action unfold with a mildly amused expression. He wasn't used to socializing with a lot of people at once; he'd have to get into the swing of it at his own pace, probably after a beer or two. The selection of food was interesting, just as the guests were a diverse bunch. The vampire wasn't sure who the vivacious redhead was, but he suspected that English wasn't her first language.

Rhiannon left Connor and Purity to the couch and video games. She never had the patience for them. Once the characters started fighting, she got frustrated that she couldn't ad-lib the moves she wanted, and just gave up and went outside to pick a fight she could do her own way. Instead, she moved back to the kitchen, where the vampire was quietly observing everybody else.

She drained her beer and climbed onto a barstool, knees swinging open she she could rap her knuckles on the seat. "So you're Avery."
