The line-up at Barnes and Noble began before their doors opened at 10am.
The protest started two days before.
The strong, the fearful, many counting themselves as devout church-goers, carrying placards and chanting, praying for God’s wrath to reign down and smite the blasphemers. The throng, a gathering of less than 20 at first, soon to grow over a hundred, attempted to chain themselves in front of the bookstore. Tempers flared, accusations and spittle thrown, before police were called. The movement was ordered across the street, to stand behind metal barricades usually reserved for parades.
They would not be deterred. An unholy thing (or the next Anne Rice, take your pick) was due in moments to grace their presence. And all in attendance – the worshipers, the curious and the righteous – would have their moment with the vampire named Deanna. ( Yin and Yang )

The pizza slice in front of him was huge, so big it almost dwarfed the plate, and Connor picked it up with both hands to take a bite before washing the cheese and bread down with some soda. The establishment was crowded inside, so he'd opted to eat at one of the wrought-iron tables on the sidewalk. The evening was pleasantly warm, the sun just ducking past the horizon, and he was watching the sky turn dark purple as it continued to descend.
He'd seen the first of Rhiannon's drawings that afternoon, doing a rare websurf on his computer after checking his email. So weird to think that was him, and despite the Slayer's earlier jokes about capes and rhinestones he felt pleased and even a little honored by it. He wondered if Clemence had seen it yet.
There was a school catalog next to his plate, and the Destroyer was studying the list of electives. It was probably going to have to wait until fall, but he was going to give school another try. He didn't know what he wanted to take yet, but something. A glob of pizza sauce fell on one of the pages, and he wiped it up with a napkin. One thing about these gigantic slices, they were messy.
Unless one were to go to IHOP or Denny's, breakfast for dinner was incredibly hard to come by. Faith felt somewhat slighted by that fact, seeing as how she traditionally woke up in the evening hours by virtue of her "job." She supposed it didn't really matter what she ate -- being a Slayer virtually ensured a quick metabolism and stern workout regimen, even into her 30s -- but Faith just had the occasional hankering for scrambled eggs and pancakes. Problem was, she was sick of those two corporate chains, so she was pretty much out of luck in that regard.

Though her conversation with Connor had been frustrating in some ways, at least Faith left with the knowledge that he cared about her. It was a good feeling to have, considering she once thought she'd completely ruined whatever bond they'd formed several months prior. Knowing that also made the Slayer more determined to return after she was finished helping Giles with his current crisis. She'd taken Connor for granted in a lot of ways, and even though she wasn't really sure how, Faith wanted to make sure she never did that again. Considering their shared experiences -- not just in Chicago and Nevada, but in the past in L.A. as well -- she really owed him more than she'd given.
But that would probably have to wait a while. In two days' time, Faith would be on a plane bound for England. From there, she wasn't sure where she'd wind up. Rupert didn't give many details, though he did tell Faith she'd be dealing with a young Slayer out of Belarus who had accidentally killed a couple people. Faith had been momentarily annoyed at the reality of having to deal with something like this, but the more she thought about it, the more the Slayer felt a little privileged that Giles asked her to help.
If Faith's experience could keep someone else from going down the same road, any personal inconvenience would be worth it.
First thing was first, though; Faith needed to make sure she said her see you laters before leaving. She wouldn't call them goodbyes, because the brunette had every intention of coming back to Chicago once she'd done her bit to help. Between Connor, Avery, Rhiannon and especially Hayden, Faith had a lot of reasons to think of Chicago as home, and she wasn't going to let this diversion keep her from keeping her personal relationships and finding that balance in life.
