"Hey Leon, it's Jeb. I have Tammy with me, do you mind if I put you on speaker phone?" he asked into his blackberry phone. "Ok, just a second." He positioned his blackberry between him and his agent, and pressed the select button. "Can you hear me?"

As a younger man, Bastian had never bothered to read the newspapers. Current events had been singularly uninteresting to him, and when it seemed unlikely that he would set foot out of Louisiana there had seemed little point in taking an interest beyond what was happening in his own parish. It was only when he enlisted in the Marines and was later shipped to the Middle East that he realized the extent of the world that existed beyond working on a shrimp boat and winning his next wrestling match.
The Cajun lifted the heavy coffee mug to his mouth and took a drink while flipping the pages of the current issue of the Sun-Times he'd bought from the box outside. Here in early May it was getting too hot for coffee, and he supposed he'd be switching to soda soon since no one knew how to make sweet tea up here. But the weather was nice, a few wisps of cloud scudding across the sky. When it cooled off later, he would take his run, taking advantage of the longer hours.
A couple of teenagers entered the shop, and Bastian moved his size-twelve shoes so they could get by. They needed wider spaces around the tables in this place.
