Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Who: Marlow & Hunter
What: Marlow goes to check in on her friend.
When: October 31, during the party.
Where: Hunter's Trailer
Status: Closed.

Somewhere in the back of her mind, Marlow knew she shouldn't be feeling as good as she did. It was weird, having that horror from the terrible night before balled up in her chest with excitement wrapped around it. But all day she'd been looking forward to her first fall celebration with the Cirque; she'd even spent the morning adding last minute finishing touches to her costume. Around late morning, she texted Hunter to see how he was doing; again mid-afternoon when he didn't respond. He was on her mind all day--if she felt strange, he must've been feeling a 100 times worse. Come nightfall, she tried reaching him again. The celebration had already begun, and from her trailer window she could see the Cirque people walking and dancing through the village, making their way to the party on the Midway in their wild, vibrant, and clever costumes.

She hadn't put hers on yet. Instead, she threw on a jacket over her dress, slipped on some shoes, and closed the door behind her on her way out to visiting her friend. When she approached his trailer, she put her ear to the door, thinking, maybe, that she would hear music. It did occur to her that if he was there, he wouldn't want to be bothered, but she had to be sure. Marlow rapped her knuckles softly against the door at first, waited, and then tried again a little louder.

Hunter wasn't sure how he felt, and that, in and of itself, was unsettling for him. The messed-up events of the cirque had finally come to an end, and it had been revealed that, along with being possessed by some centuries-dead white guy, he had also murdered someone. Someone he knew. Someone he had worked with. Someone he had considered a friend.

Now, murder was not uncommon in his life. Growing up as he had, you might even say it was actually a pretty regular occurrence. He had seen dead bodies before. He had even witnessed a few people being mauled a few times. But never, in all of his years and all of his experiences, had he ever hurt or killed someone himself.

It was a really fucked up feeling.

And to know that, less than 24 hours later, when he should have been feeling worse than he ever had in his life, that he felt fine, was messing him up even more. Mostly because it was almost like he couldn't feel bad. And he wanted to, damnit. He deserved to! The loud sounds of revelry coming from outside only served to royally piss him off. There was no way that he was going to slap on a costume and go dance the night away like nothing had happened.

So he was doing what he normally did when life got too heavy- he was laying in his trailer with his headphones on, listening to some music. He didn't hear the first knock, but the second, more insistent rap to the door did cause him to pull his headphones down around his neck. He groaned. He didn't feel like company, but even still he found himself swinging his legs over the side of the couch and padding over to the door, throwing it open to look down into Marlow's familiar face. He grinned half-heartedly. "Hey red." He tilted his head at her. "Shouldn't you be at the party? I hope that's not your costume because uh.... I don't get it."

"You wouldn't," she said matter-of-fact, pulling her hands out of her coat pockets. Her brows knitted together in concentration as she brought her hands up, one made into a fist with the other orbiting around it, curling and uncurling her fingers--an altered version of spirit fingers--and gradually moving this motion up to his ear. From there, she drew back, pulling from his ear some imaginary thing, which, when she opened up her palm, turned out to be a piece of candy that she didn't even know she had a minute ago. Looking up at Hunter as if mystified by her own talents, she declared, "I am an undercover magician."

Marlow took his hand and dropped it into his palm.

"The real costume's on my bed." With a shrug, she shoved her hands back inside her coat and looked him over before offering a wry, tilted smile. "I wanted to see how you were doing."

His eyebrows lifted, and he couldn't help but grin at the piece of candy she pressed into his hand. "You're right, I would not have guessed that." He looked back at her as she admitted why she was really there and rolled his shoulder in a shrug. "Ah. Ya know, for having committed murder, I actually feel pretty ok." His lips puckered to the side- that was in poor taste and he knew it. "Uh, sorry. That was- yea. I'm alright. Can you tell?" He chuckled mirthlessly and pressed one side against the doorway, taking to twisting the piece of candy she'd given him between his fingers. It was clear he didn't really know what to do with himself, a stark contrast to his typical self-assured air.

"Just wasn't feeling very revelrous right now, I guess." He hesitated awkwardly, then gestured back into his trailer with a nod of his head. "You uh, wanna come in?"

"It's almost like you're under a happy spell," she deadpanned without missing a beat. It was perfectly understandable that Hunter would feel anything but festive, and she didn't blame him for not wanting anything to do with the party. It sucked to see him this way, obviously messed up, and she couldn't help but wonder how anyone deeply affected by the deaths and possessions were going to cope when the magic keeping them distracted lifted. Marlow could see Hunter's hesitation, and she nearly started to take the hint and back off to her own trailer when he invited her into his. She opened her mouth to say something, closed it, then mildly grimaced.

"There's another really bad joke here," she said, gesturing between them. It was way too soon to ask your friend if they were going to murder you. She shook her head, offering him a small, wry smile. "Look what you started."
