Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Who: Kennet and Callum
What: Visiting the principal's office for...career counseling?
When: October 25th, mid-morning
Where: Kennet's trailer

Callum hadn't really thought this through. He knew he wanted to spend more time with his new wife, but he wasn't sure, exactly, how to do that. Catherine was the Cirque's Seer. Callum? Well.. Callum was the Lead Roustabout, and sure that was an excellent job to have, but the hours were rough, when it came to wanting to spend time with Catherine. Callum's job didn't depend on any supernatural ability. He was a werewolf. A bitten werewolf at that. He couldn't shift as he pleased. He didn't have much control over it, yet, even on the nights of full moons. The point was that he could change occupations. Catherine really couldn't.

So if anything was going to be done about their time together, it was going to be up to him.

He'd talked a little bit to Ana and Cat about other jobs he could do, and the most exciting thing had seemed to be sword throwing and knife throwing- you know, much like Ana. At least until it was mentioned that knives might be thrown at him to, considering what act he was a part of.

He didn't want any knives or swords thrown at him. Fuck.

He didn't know what to do. He liked being the Lead Roustabout. It was something that he did well. But it was a sacrifice that he was willing to make to spend more time with Catherine.

Taking a deep breath, Callum adjusted his lightweight jacket and then reached up to give a firm knock on Kennet's trailer door. The last time he'd visited the Ringmaster's trailer without Catherine, things hadn't gone so well. He was uncomfortable, to say the least. Hopefully Kennet would be a little nicer to him, this time. He wasn't there because he was in trouble, he was there on his own accord.

The stir in the air around the disappearance and subsequent death of the dancer began to pull at the Djinn's fire. As connected as he was to the Cirque, itself, the disturbances bent and pulled at his personality.

There were far more important items to deal with than a wolf wanting to change their occupation. But then, it seemed to Kennet that Callum focused far more on his female than the rest of the going ons at the Cirque. As long as he did his job, Kennet did not really care whether he noticed girls going missing, attacks or anything amiss. That was, in fact, security's job.

After so many months, the Ringmaster did feel the man should have more control over his wolf, but then he never did perceive shifters as being more than wild children incapable of handling their inner aggressions.

Opening the door, Kennet stepped back near immediately to allow him to walk inside. "We can make this quick."

True, maybe a wolf wanting to change his occupation was minute compared to the other things that the djinn dealt with.. but it was still something that was important to the wolf. And as far as the missing dancer went, Of course Callum was aware. People went missing from the circus all of he time, unfortunately. It was just shy from being a norm, wasn’t it? People disappeared, people got murdered, people got attacked. He’d lost plenty of roustabouts over the last year or two. Callum was aware of people going missing, but what was there to be done about it? What could he do? He was just a wolf and he was just a Roustabout. He didn’t have any special powers, so all he could do was help where help was needed. But perhaps troubling the Ringmastsr with his dumb first world problems wasn’t helping.

And maybe he focused on Catherine because he didn’t want anything to happen to her. He didn’t want her to up and disappear. He wanted to spend time with her and he wanted to work the same hours as she did. It was complicated.

As for him having better control over his wolf, well.. he did? A little. The wolf got along with Catherine, at least. But he still couldn’t and didn’t remember what went on while he was in wolf form. He didn’t remember anything.

“Wha—okay,” he hesitated, looking at Kennet. Blinking, he slowly stepped past the taller man, and made his way into the Djinn’s trailer. Giving a look around, he tucked his hands into his jeans pockets, and let blue eyes settle back on Kennet as he turned on his heel to look back toward him, “uh.. I was wondering if um.. well, I like being you lead Roustabout. I’m good at it, yeah? But I never get to see Catherine... and I was wondering if.. if maybe.. you might have another job to suggest? That works primarily during the Cirque’s hours of operation?”

A stone expression made Kennet's face flat of any emotion as he looked at Callum. All hidden desires and thoughts laid out for him in the gaze, Kennet re-evaluated Callum's abilities to see if he could be put anywhere else. The process would feel much like Kennet's first meeting with Callum when the wolf joined the Cirque. His gaze penetrating into the man's very soul and showing nothing to react to.

After a moment, he looked away to step over to the mini bar and lean against it. "Understand that you work very well in your position and I am hard pressed to relieve you from it. I do understand that you wish to spend more time with your wife." He paused. The fact that they decided to marry without notification to the Cirque had been nothing but a small issue of documentation. "Unfortunately, you have no training in other areas besides your instrument playing."

Callum worried his bottom lip with his teeth, blue eyes doing their best to stay with Kennet, and not awkwardly looking away or elsewhere. But the awkwardness and uncomfortableness would be plain as day for the djinn to see.
And when a Callum first joined the circus, he had just wanted help. He had found the circus by accident, and he’d been taken in by its magic, and had hoped they would be able to help him. You know, like they had obviously helped the mermaids he’d seen in the tanks, and the other beasts that were featured and working there.
It wasn’t that he was ungrateful or anything like that, but he was still seeking help from the djinn.

He nodded hesitantly, “aye, I know. I like my job, sir. It’s not that. I just wish to be able to spend time with my wife..” and as far as them not notifying the circus about getting married, wel, it was somewhat on a whim that they married anyway! It all happened so fast. And they had wanted to keep it private between them.

Callum cleared his throat and managed to drag his gaze away to look down again, “well... yes. I play guitar. And base. A little piano, but not a lot? I can draw and paint,” he looked back up at Kennet, “I think I could still make funnel cakes.. but.. other that that, I don’t have any special skills or training... ‘s’why I was hoping you could help me?”

"I cannot help in changing your occupation." He said simply. The man might have some talent in music but not enough for the needs of a Cirque musician and while his passion for eating might have placed him well in the food vendors, he had the attitude for food that left Kennet not wishing to put in within temptation.

"I will allow you to delegate your duties while remaining the lead for the Roustabouts. Anything of great importance will still need to be handled by you, but you will have more free time to spend with Mrs McCullough. I will wish to make sure you are checking in on things during show hours also. I trust you to make the right appointments to the assistant positions being created here from your current staff."

Kennet tilted his head. "Do you have any further wishes or questions?"

"Well.. No.. that's not.. that's not what I was asking, sir. I was looking for suggestions?" And okay, yeah, maybe he wasn't that great at playing guitar, but he did and could play. And as for him working as a food vendor at the Cirque, yes, yes there would likely be irresistable temptation.

Callum blinked. "Sir?" He smiled-- he couldn't help it, really. But then let it fall to a more serious expression again, "Are you sure, sir?" He hesitated a moment before extending his hand to Kennet, "I can definitely do that, yeah?" He offered a hopeful smile, "I've got a good team. Small-- we could use some more-- but.. but there's nothing we can't handle, sir." He nodded.

"I'd be happy to remain the lead Roustabout. I'll still take care of the more important matters, myself. A-and I'll check in and follow up on everything in the evenings," he assured Kennet. "You have my word, sir. Thank you. Very, very much."

He smiled and shook his head, "No other wishes," he let his voice trail off somewhat, "a-although? I was wondering what you might think of my staying home on.. on the nights of the full moon? With Catherine, of course."

Having ignored the redundant questions, Kennet looked down at the extended hand with little expression on his face. "Do not make me regret this, Callum," he replied rather than taking the hand. Kennet did not offer his hand to anyone, especially in arrangements. And while he would take someone's hand in his, he rarely did so in such a lewd manner as Americans tended to.

"Rather than in a cage? Or chained there?" Kennet asked for clarification. "How are you coming along in your control of your wolf?"

Stepping toward the door, as if to usher the conversation along. Kennet could be agreeable when logic was presented to him. The issue with so many of the employees gathered in the Cirque were their illogical tendencies and desires. A shifter who did not take the care to learning and working with his wolf could not logically be let loose, even to the care of their spouse. If he was willing to work on the issue, Kennet would reconsider various problematic scenes.

Hesitating, Callum slowly dropped his hand back down to wipe on his pant leg out of habit. Clearing his throat, he shifted his weight a little and glanced down. For the record, Callum was Scottish.. but.. but fine, then, he didn't have to have Kennet shake his hand. "I won't, sir.." He desperately wanted it all to work out. Why would he not respect the Djinn's wishes? He very much wanted to spend time with Catherine, and if Kennet was willing to work with him to allow that, he'd do everything he could to make it work.

Blinking, his brows furrowed, and he lifted his focus back up toward Kennet, "yes. Rather than in a cage... Please understand that I wouldn't ask this if I didn't think that I was capabale of enough control to be absolutely, positively, definitively sure that I wouldn't harm a single hair on Catherine's head. I've been working on it. Catherine's been helping me. But I.. Well, no one else is like me, sir... Everyone else around here seems to be born like this. Me? I shouldn't've fuckin' lived, yeah? I'm having a hard time understanding it all, and the other shifters I ask," he shrugged, "it's all a bit different. It isn't the same. But Catherine has sat with me the last several full moons, and she says I'm very good with her."

It was all a human thing to Kennet.

"You may be capable of not harming your wife, Callum, but what if you get out. Are you capable of not harming other employees?" He asked simply. The rules were the rules and while Callum was a hardworker, Kennet would not leave an attack on other employees unpunished.

Kennet wrapped his hands around his back. "The only thing you are missing between being bitten and being born is they understand that they and their animal are two creatures sharing one space. One must establish communication between them. And there are many others like you, they are just not so verbal about it. I have arrangements with every one of them in different manners. Wolves just happen to be the most volatile spirits."

The Ringmaster needed further convincing of his ability to take control than his wolf being kind to his mate.

He pursed his lips and dropped his gaze again, thinking quietly. Reaching up to rub at his brow, he dropped his hand away again as he looked back up at Kennet and gave a hesitant and gentle shake of his head. "I-I don't know..." He frowned and looked down again.

Worrying his bottom lip with his teeth again, he listened quietly and carefully to Kennet's words. "I didn't think I went around telling everyone I'm a bitten wolf.." Was he really that verbal about it??? He sighed, "I don't know how I'm supposed to earn an understanding with my wolf. I can't even remember the nights of the full moons, when I wake up the next morning."

He lifted blue eyes back up to Kennet, "it's just blurs and flashes of little things here and there."

Perhaps Callum should not have brought it up so soon.

Giving an exasperated sigh, Kennet lowered his head to be more on the same height level as Callum. "I could help with gaining that type of memory after your shift. Would you wish for lessons so that you may stay with your wife on the full moon?"

Time, of course, was limited. The next full moon was in a week. Any lessons that came from the Djinn, as Callum might have guessed, would be harsh and to the point. But given the kind of magic the Ringmaster held, it would be effective in getting the desired outcome. Kennet followed the same rules as everyone else in not killing other employees unless they broke the rules in very particular ways.
