Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Who: Ana & Thorsten
What: Emotions going haywire
When: May 29, late afternoon
Where: Starting at the weather tent, then who knows?
Warnings: One embarrassed Ana? TBD
Etc: Tarot challenge, Queen of Swords reversed

Since Chloe's departure from the Cirque, Ana had felt a little lost. Callum was still there, and for that she was grateful, but she missed Chloe. They'd had so much in common, shared a lot of things and a lot of time together. The arrival of Letha and Marco had helped a bit, but she wasn't that close to either of them yet. And she missed that feeling.

She headed towards the weather tent once she'd gotten back from the beach, hoping that, if nothing else, Thorsten could help her get drunk and make some of the sting go away. Or maybe he'd just make it storm for hours and she could ride out her bad mood. Something like that. "Hola," she called out, as she always did.

The Norseman was busy reworking the rooms of the weather tent when he heard the familiar voice call out to him. He'd recognize her accent anywhere, but the fact she greeted him in her native tongue made it incredibly obvious. "Well, if it isn't my favorite Valkyrie." He grinned, exiting the former sun room which was now starting to show the telltale signs of a snow storm.

"To what do I owe the pleasure?" He asked in a soft tone as if he could tell the woman wasn't perhaps in the best mood. He always adored her company, but having spent enough time with her, he could tell in a instant if she wasn't herself. Perhaps it was the fact she didn't have her usual smile in place. He chose to internally Vito his last question and instead he offered a simple word. "Bar?"

Ana looked up at him, managing a small smile that didn't quite reach her eyes. "Proving me theory that you say the best things," she answered, shoving her hands in her pockets. "I'm just-" She sighed, making an annoyed sound in the back of her throat. She wasn't great at admitting when she was hurting.

"Yeah, bar, I think," she muttered softly. "I'll tell you about it, but I'd also like to pour rum down my throat while I do it."

"I certainly try, my dear," he smiled, crossing the distance of the room in moments to be by her side. Not asking any questions. She didn't need to sigh or sound annoyed for him to see something was very wrong. He was used to the woman being all snark and playful flirting. Not sad smiles. That was almost painful for him to see.

"Then rum it is and you can tell me all about it," he offered, placing a hand on the small of her back to guide her from the tent. Not a gentle touch, like he was soothing a wild animal. But solid, comforting and warm. "And anyway, I think we could both do with a drink before the madness starts again."

Ana was fairly predictable when she visited him, high energy and sparkling eyes, so he wasn't wrong. When she gave her friendship and it was suddenly cut off, it cut deeply. It wasn't anyone's fault, Chloe had to do what was best for her, obviously, and she hadn't been doing very well. Still. It was a bitter pill to swallow.

His hand on her back was comforting, a consistent thing in the midst of the upheaval that had been the Cirque lately. "Well I won't disagree with that," she replied. "Crazy is the normal around here."

If anyone knew that feeling of loss it was Thorsten. The man had been among humans for well over a thousand years at this point. He'd lost so many friends, lovers..He could barely remember some of their faces anymore. That was the problem with living for a long time. Time eventually caught up to everyone you knew.

"I blame the shifters..They're a crazy bunch," he teased as he looked down at her with a playful little smirk pulling at his lips. Attempting to cheer her up. Leading her through the grounds and in the direction of a local bar. Anyone would think Thorsten had a natural homing beacon for alcohol. But really, he'd just been around. "They have a tendency of causing trouble and making things more fun."

Ana snorted, faintly amused. "For once it's not our fault," she answered, some humor finally creeping in. "We're fun, though, I'll agree with that." She was mostly walking on autopilot and following his lead, because she was tired of thinking too much. She did it all the time and, unfortunately, kept a great deal of it to herself. For her to show up at Thorsten's door and ask him to listen was a mark of her trust. Especially considering the only other person she'd ask that of was Callum, but he was having his own problems right now.

"Can we get pizza too?" she asked.

He couldn't help but grin when he heard that spark return to her voice. Counting that as point one for him. He perhaps wasn't the most open himself, tending to stick to his easy, slightly jokey persona, rather than go deeper and let people see his darker side. He didn't want people he'd formed bonds with suddenly fearing him. So he completely understood her guarded exterior. In fact the only person who truly knew him in the circus was Cat, and she only knew because of her abilities.

"Of all the Italian dishes to choose from, you pick pizza?" He asked in a playful tone. Giving her a slight nudge with his shoulder. "Fine..But you better not be the type to ask for Olives..Because trust me, they're not a acquired taste that age gives you."

"So sue me, I fall back on comfort food," she answered, finally smiling up at him. "Don't worry about the olives, I never liked them. On a different day I'll come into town and eat my weight in pasta, but not right now."

The walk into Rome had relaxed her a bit, taken some of the tension from her neck and the slump from her shoulders. She was a long way from her usual self, though, but this was a good start. And she needed to get this off her chest before it started to crush her.

He laughed, playfully shaking his head. "We'll grab you some rum ice cream too, see if that makes you feel better," he teased, lips quirking into a smirk. She knew him well enough to know it was good natured. He wasn't the 'oh are you gonna go eat ice cream and cry' type of guy. He just knew that ice cream was the go to comfort food.

Walking through the streets of Rome was always relaxing to Thorsten. It hadn't changed a great deal over the years and he easily found the bar he was guiding her towards. "After you," he offered as he held open the door like the gentleman he was. Allowing her to pass through before following her. Calling the bartender over in fluent Italian and ordering a rum for her and a double whiskey for himself. Not that it would really have a great deal of affect on him, but it was nice for keeping up the appearance. The bar itself sported dim lighting and seemed to have a dive-bar esthetic, which suited Thorsten down to the ground. Neon lights weren't his favorite.

"So, Ana," he started, handing her the glass and picking up his own before moving them towards a booth in the corner. "Tell me why I'm not seeing that beautiful smile this time around."

"Ooh, now there's an idea," she answered, smiling at the thought of rum ice cream. Maybe after they had their pizza, she was definitely hungry for real food right now.

She smiled and stepped into the bar, lingering next to him as he ordered drinks. She didn't speak Italian, but some words were similar enough to Spanish that she could follow the general flow of the conversation. And she could appreciate the quieter atmosphere of the place, she definitely wasn't in the mood for a place that might draw crowds of tourists.

She took her drink and followed him to the booth, dropping into it and resting her elbows on the table. "You remember, Chloe, right?" she asked. "Jace's mate, tiny thing. Worked in the kitchens."

Thorsten had..been around. It was fair to say he could mark off every language in the book, even quite a few dead languages. Italian would always be a odd one to him after the crusades. Having killed off the few remaining worshipers of the old faiths. Rome held the mother church of the knights after all, and while he did usually see their particular God as the new boy in school, he was well aware of how brutal people could be in the name of their God. Hell, the worshipers of the vanir and aesir were just as bad. But that was certainly not something he wanted to think about.

He sat down facing the brunette, placing his glass on the table and relaxing back into the plush leather. "I remember her well, she'd often come into the weather tent on cooler days." He told her, letting her continue. There had been another layer, he'd helped Chloe when she first found out she was pregnant. She'd paid him back in sweet treats because that was the only currency he'd accept form her.

Ana nodded. "She and I got to be really close, we shared a language, we loved to cook, you could find us in the kitchens for hours, gossiping and laughing. It's probably fair to say she was my best friend. When she found out she was pregnant, I knitted her a blanket, like my abuela used to do."

She sipped at her drink, wishing it was bigger. Or stronger. "Then she and Jace left, and it just feels like...a piece of me left with her. I got so used to having her around, to texting her weird things at all hours of the night, and now she's not here anymore." She sighed. "It's stupid, I feel abandoned in the midst of a huge crowd of people, not to mention, she wasn't my only friend. But she got in the farthest past my ridiculous walls."

Thorsten gave her a sad little smile, reaching across the table to gently place his hand over hers in a comforting manner. Because if anyone knew the loss of a friend it was him. He'd lost plenty in the great many years he'd been alive. That was the main problem of being an immortal in a land of mortals. Hell, he'd even lost his connection with the Gods since he'd been bound to earth.

"It's not stupid, valqueria," he told her as his thumb brushed against the back of her hand, seeming almost comically small in his palm. "Never feel stupid for having emotions. The people that we care about deeply stay with us in some way." And there was the voice of someone who'd lived far too long. "And I'm pretty sure you're going to find someone who wants to break down those walls again. Trust me on this."

Ana made an uncomfortable noise in the back of her throat. She felt a bit like a butterfly with a pin through its abdomen, held in place by his sad smile. "I just wish she could have stayed here, you know?" she asked. "I don't have a lot of friends, it's a short list of people who care enough to get past the growling exterior. Even shorter that get all the way in. So I'll keep my eyes peeled, but I hope they brought their metaphorical siege weapons." She sighed and signaled for another drink.

"Maybe she just thought settling down to have her pack in one place would be easier..Having a family on the road can be difficult for some people." Chloe seemed the home type. Like she needed some stability. That was the only reason he could see that she would leave. That or Jace wanted to lay down roots and she'd just gone along with it.

"What growling exterior?" he asked playfully, he'd always seen her as nice. Okay, yes. She had a bit of a fiery nature, but that really only added to her rather than scaring him away. "I don't think they'll quite need siege weapons..but I'm sure they'd be willing to use them if they had to."

She thought about telling Thorsten what had happened to Chloe right before she left, but that wasn't her news to share. Chloe had told her in confidence, so she'd keep it. "Maybe so," she agreed. It probably wasn't far from the truth. Chloe did seem like she'd want to settle down eventually.

Ana snorted. "Wait til you see me with someone I don't like," she replied. "Very snappy. I don't know, they might. Battering rams. Catapults. The whole kit and caboodle."

Thorsten hadn't seen Chloe in her last few weeks at the circus, she'd promised to come visit the weather tent when she felt up to it, but had never arrived. So he was blissfully unaware of what had happened. In his mind the girl had gone on to start her life with her little family. And that was a better outcome than most got.

Thorsten laughed, playfully shaking his head at her. "I don't know about that.. They might already be sneakily chipping away with a chisel while you're not paying attention."

Ana muttered something uncharitable about herself in Spanish, along the lines of 'but why though', as she raised her hand for yet another drink. She was probably downing them faster than was advisable, but she couldn't make herself care. Her tolerance was pretty high, she knew when to cut herself off. And she was nowhere near that point yet.

"I need to go to the beach again soon," apropos of nothing. "Less chance of my head starting to spin like a top while I'm there."

Thorsten couldn't help but give Ana a 'oh hush' look. He didn't like the woman being down on herself. He'd always seen her as a wonderful person. Bad things sometimes just happened. Even to the best people. It wasn't her fault. He'd been around long enough to know that people came and went with the tides. Honestly his time with the circus was the only really time he'd set roots down and allowed himself to get close to people. Well..other than his exwife, but that had ended badly. He'd met people there that seemed more stable, less...floaty. Ana was certainly the chief among them. She had loyalty which was something Aria lacked. Or at least in his opinion. Plus she could handle her booze. That was key.

The man's lip quirked up slightly at the mention of the beach, but he hid it behind the rim of his whiskey glass. It could have almost been a smirk. "Well you in a bikini would make other heads spin instead." Was his playful reply. Though he was sure it would. He'd certainly have to keep his eye on the beach. "We might end up with half the staff calling in sick with whiplash."

Ana made a hmph-ing noise in the back of her throat. She was having a bad day, she figured she was allowed to be a bit down on herself. It would pass eventually, the way they all did, she just had to wait for the pendulum to swing back the other way. She worked very hard to project the image that she had all her shit together, at least in public. This wasn't public, though, it was just her and Thorsten. If she couldn't let the cracks show here, she couldn't do it anywhere.

That made her snicker. "And heart eyes, like in the old cartoons?" she asked, laughing quietly. "Think I'll have them following after me in a line. It's usually the cats who do the chasing, not the other way around. Well. Unless wolves are involved."

He couldn't help but smile at that. He knew bravado at a mile away. He knew Ana wasn't always as put together as she seemed. She had a brave face she put on. And it was honestly refreshing to see her let her walls crack just a little to see the other side of her. Even if that was a side he wanted to just pull into his arms and try to make better. He wasn't sure if he'd completely broke those walls down yet. He'd gone for the 'slowly chipping away' method he'd eluded to. Even if she hadn't quite grasped that he'd been hinting at himself.

"Absolutely." He laughed, playfully shaking his head. He wouldn't put that past some of the witches. "Well, consider all us foolish men the Wile E Coyote to your Roadrunner for the day.." The blond smirked, clearly having at least a little reference to those 'old cartoons'. "Because I'm pretty sure there would be plenty of running into walls."
