The plantation house had never become a sanctuary for Danny. It wasn't for lack of trying. When he had first arrived, he had stayed in his rooms, but he fell back into old habits quickly. Though he didn't look like it now, he was animal first and human second. He would always prefer to live among nature and in the circus, the best place to do that was where he worked. The Menagerie became his home.
That didn't mean that he didn't go to the plantation house to eat. He could eat well enough in the Menagerie when he shifted back into the unicorn, feasting on grass and alfalfa, but the human was better off going to get some of Khalida's cooking. She knew his appetite better than anyone.
He had just put down a lot of food and was rubbing his belly with a satisfied expression on his face, heading back out of the house instead of up to his own rooms to find sleep when he heard the screams.
Dashing around a corner into the entryway, wide eyes landed on Nevenka at the foot of the stairs. She was obviously injured but he noticed that she was looking back the way she had come, toward the open door leading back out. "Nevenka!" As soon as he was beside her, he slowed his movements, lowering himself to crouch beside her. "What happened to you? What do you need?" He tried to make his presence a calm and soothing one, even though he was rather alarmed and worried himself.
