The Midway had been particularly crowded this evening, keeping Khepri very much occupied during her entire shift. Her cobras seemed to sense the shift in the atmosphere as if it hung in the air and it made them restless. For her part, it made for a more entertaining spectacle and the awed patrons of the Cirque watched her and the pair of snakes with a sense of anticipation and fear. Each movement put them further on edge and Khepri fed into that apprehension all too willingly. Tonight, their dance was a battle and she lived for it. The warm weather invigorated her and while the restless sleep and the infestation of dolls troubled her, she felt more herself here than she had in Russia. The country was not without its own beauty, but it was a kind that she preferred to admire from afar, under the heat of the life-giving sun. Khepri had seen enough of grey and white and was more than content in Thailand, a world of color and life. Now that the last few patrons finally shuffled away into the darkness, Khepri stretched and rolled her shoulders, delighted to be free of her duty until her next shift. For all the ill that could be said of this place, Khepri rarely found any real interest in thinking of them. She was well occupied and afforded a chance to travel without being at the mercy of petty witches. The compensation was irrelevant, but she could always find a way to use it. With the night with still a few good hours left, Khepri closed up her area with a practiced efficiency and took to walking through the grounds. One of her cobras had been too anxious to leave its home, but the other, seemingly just as curious as she, draped itself over her shoulders, perfectly content to see more of the little world that held it captive. As she walked, she occasionally whispered to it and it answered back, the pair of them speaking a language only they could understand. As she wandered, Khepri couldn’t help but notice there were quite a few new faces around. Of course, a thing such as this was likely to draw fresh blood in rather often but she continued to remain fascinated by its allure. Of course, she too had fallen for it and that, perhaps, was why she did not underestimate its ability. Her companion, on the other hand, seemed wholly disinterested in her commentary which caused her to chuckle as they continued on past the Big Top. |
