The thick smoldering haze of darkness settles all around, leaving Silas blind and fumbling along. With feet bare and raw from the hard ground that he walks upon his hands trace the walls and as a sickening heat radiates from them leaving Silas disoriented and fearful as the depth of this unknown pit continues. Wandering along he finally stumbles on a cell, floor to ceiling, and rod iron with its door swung wide open. Silas peers in. There is no exit to this inferno and from what he can gather, there is no exit either. It is the distant sound of a sobbing woman that draws Silas in. Huddled against the floor he steps closer until nearly on top of the silhouetted woman, and it hits him then. "Mom?” Though there is inflection in his tone, Silas holds no doubt that the woman before him is in fact his mother. His face however is unable to hide the confusion coupled with fear and anger that washes over him at the sight of her.
His eyes adjust to the darkness and for the first time ever he can see the age that has caused her skin to sag and hang from fragile bones, with his stomach in knots Silas studies her and she peers back at me with disgust. She recoils and sneers, her hands violently shoving him away and out of the cell until finally she draws back and spits in his general direction. "Get away from me!" The old woman shouts, "get away from me, you monster! You belong here, not me! I have no son, get away from me!" Sitting back with his knees in the dirt, Silas watches as his mother disappears into the darkness, gripping her chest and muttering profanities that her church would have banished her from for ever speaking aloud.
Tracing along the wall in what he hopes is a way out Silas is instead greeted by further darkness and stench as something moves in the bleak world around him. He should have seen it as an omen of things to come, the sound that cut through the still of the night as he walks deeper into the unknown for the retched sound was unlike any other; the mewling of dying animals. He should have run. He should have never looked back and that’s when something hit him and stars burst to life before his eyes.
Waking in a sweat Silas reaches for the light on his bed side table and is immediately greeted by a myriad of bruises that range in size and shape. “Who the fuck is having fun tonight?” He wonders aloud in a whispered tone, staring down at his bare body, unable to shake the feeling as if he is not alone and that something or someone unseen maybe lurking in the room with him or just outside of it.
Never one to merely sit idly by Silas throws back the covers, dresses appropriately for the weather, grabs a book and takes off into night. Perhaps he could investigate and seek out the reason for such mysterious bruises, as well as clear his head from the haunting dream. Never did the thought cross Silas’ mind that perhaps he might not be an admirable foe for the being reeking such havoc, but Silas had never been one to merely back down due to fear, but there was a part of Silas that hoped his racing pulse was simply a left over reminder of his bad dream.
