Being able to tattoo a mermaid — merman, he corrected — wasn’t an opportunity Chandra had suspected to encounter so soon after his contract was signed. His experience with them was rather limited and that was being generous. He hadn’t lied when he stated that the majority of his family’s extensive library focused on arts and histories well within the scope of their particular specialty. There was the odd, dusty and neglected tome of various other species, but the information was limited or inaccurate and most assuredly biased. Chandra had descended from a great many generations of witches who were in possession of a narcissism as great as their magic. While he was not particularly devoid of the former, he thought himself more rational than most of them. He, at least, was able to see the benefit in studying the others. Never mind that his deepened interest was focused more on the benefit it would have for him. A half-broken and somehow still dependable timer rang and Chandra dropped the notebook he was absorbed in to stir the bowl, watching with a keen eye the consistency of the mixture when he held the spoon up about four inches from the bowl. It was thick and well pigmented with the strong smell of lavender and he hoped it would prevent another night of restless sleep. Chandra had never been prone to fitful nights or nightmares, but he had woken up this morning accompanied by a strange feeling of dread and sheets soaked through with sweat. The witch rarely dreamed, but tended to remember them when he did, making this more unsettling than anything else. Taking up a brush and pulling his shirt off, Chandra stood in front of the full length mirror in his trailer long enough to spot the dragon crawling around near his collarbone and the white elephant standing firmly before it. The edges of that white beast were starting to fade, reminding him that he would have to touch him up soon. He turned his attention back to his upper arm where he quickly painted the sketch he had been working on earlier and with the help of the magic, the temporary ink set fast and he was able to replace his shirt in time for the arrival of the merman. Chandra took a moment to clean up some of his earlier experiments and prepared a glass with the preservation magic he typically used for storing live (or once-live) samples. Though he was working on assumption, he figured it would work well enough until he developed something new if need be. All this was accomplished in time to appear as if he was simply at his leisure, with a pot of tea brewing on the small stove to boot. |
