About the Community
Welcome to the Circle Cast, a place to explore witchcraft beyond wicca. While Wiccans and their beliefs are welcome here, it is an unfortunate state of affairs that many people assume that witch = wiccan, when nothing could be further from the truth.

Not every witch holds to the same beliefs or practices, and not every witch practices the same religion. Witchcraft is the art, the craft, the old knowledge of spells, of herbs, of folklore. Wicca is a religion. Not every witch follows Wiccan beliefs, and not every Wiccan is necessarily a witch.

Beyond Wicca, we are:
Kitchen/Hedge/Green Witches
Lunar Witches
Elemental Witches
Hoodoo/Conjure/Rootworkers
Wise Women and Cunning Men
Folk Magic Practitioners
Solitary or Covened, Dianic or Traditional

We are here from all faiths, all beliefs, all walks of life to share knowledge, to find support, and to grow in our faiths and our craft. Feel free to share folklore, spells, herbal information, book recommendations, shop and supply recommendations, requests for information, and so forth. Knowledge is our greatest gift, people. Let's share it.

Rules
The rules are subject to change as needed.

  1. No bashing of faiths. No wicca-bashing, no non-wiccan bashing, no Christian or Muslim or Jewish bashing, nada. While it is acceptable to bring up concerns about our rights and freedom, especially in American where the Moral Majority and dominionism movement is quite powerful, this is not permission to blanket-bash an entire religion.

In summary: discussion of concerns is welcome. Unproductive and unhelpful whining and bitching and bashing and flaming is not.

  2. Don't be nasty. If someone upsets you, try to remember to step away from the keyboard. When you realize a discussion is getting heated, back off -- it's not about getting 'the last word'. If you have true concerns about a situation, contact a moderator and let them do their job, please.

  3. Do not delete posts and comments. Oh, if you mispost to the wrong community, or make a comment full of completely botched HTML, that's fine, delete it. But too often deleting is used as a form of censorship, or running away from a disagreement with one's tail firmly between the legs, and then when people come to the moderators, guess what? The evidence, she is gone, and alas, we can do nothing. If you make a post, let it stand. Do not delete the text to remove what you said. You can edit to add on or correct, but not to significantly change things. As this is not a rant community, I do not foresee a huge problem with this. But here is the rule, so we're all in the know, hmm?

  4. Do not play moderator. You're not a mod? Don't act like one. Don't tell another member what they can or cannot post. I mean, if it's obviously off-topic, like a post complaining about Rachel Ray and nothing whatsoever to do with anything pagan in any way, shape, or form, that's one thing. But leaving little bitchy comments to try and create the community you think it should be? Yeah, no. Don't do it. (and yes, the maintainer moderates several very large comms where people do this crap. These rules come from hard-earned experience)

  5. Troll Handling 101: Post recipes and kitten macros if you must post at all. (And it should be obvious, but part of this rule includes don't be the troll.)

  6. Don't pull any "my way/tradition/path/whachamacallit is better than yours" or "you're not a real witch because I say so" crap. Don't make us macro Milholland's "Brighter Blessed Than Thee" Mr. Personality on you.

  7. Don't muck around with font colors and size for your posts or comments. Nobody's that special of a snowflake to require it, and it can make trying to read whatever it is you want to say very, very difficult, depending on a person's vision and monitor condition and a number of other things.

  8. LJ-Cut big or numerous images, all videos, and long posts. Also lj-cut any sex-related posts. Don't know how to? Check out the friendly FAQ. It won't bite, I promise.

  9. For liability reasons, don't share information or try to find out how to manipulate someone into being your lovepuppy, or bring back the dead, or any other iffy practices that get into really dark arts or just dick around with someone else's free will or bring about death and harm on someone. Not because of any 'threefold rule' or anything of the sort. Not all of us believe in that or even follow a necessarily light path. But liability, people. Gotta cover our witchy behinds, hmm?

On a similar note, if someone gives you herbal advice, I would recommend trying to research it yourself if you're really in the dark about herbs. Even something as harmlessly simple as chamomile can cause problems if someone has severe ragweed allergies. We are not giving out medical advice, and do not claim to be practicing medicine.
