Character(s): Sam Winchester [[info]progeny] || Dean Winchester [[info]brothers_keeper]
Day: Day 3
Time of Day: Evening
Location: No Mans Land Northern gate || 'Good' side
Rating: PG?
Status: In progress

This wouldn't be the first time that Sam found himself waking up in unfamiliar territory. Twice before this had happened, and each time for a different reason. (Of course, he wasn't counting the times that involved enjoying himself too much while out for the night at university). But no matter the reason behind it, it wasn't something he would ever be happy feeling. The first time it'd happened had involved the return of the demon they'd known as Meg. A possession; only that time, Sam himself had become the host. He had gone to sleep while on the road with Dean, and woken up hundreds of miles away in South Dakota bloody and bruised on the floor of Bobby's house. It'd taken an explanation from the other two hunters before he'd truly understood what had just happened to him.

The second time had been part of a plan set in motion before he'd even been born. The yellow eyed demon- Azazel -had been the one and only reason behind the disappearance of both he and all the other children whose fate had already been decided. He'd woken up in Cold Oak, amongst faces both old and new, and forced to fend for his life. It was a task he'd ultimately failed at, losing his life by turning his back on a self-proclaimed enemy. That one mistake had been the reason he and his brother had gone through so much over the last year. Sam had been brought back to life, and Dean's soul had become the payment. One year later and Dean had been sent to hell. However temporarily.

But this. This made it a third time. A third unexplained disappearance, and to another place that didn't seem even remotely familiar. He felt as though he was trapped between a mirror; whichever way he turned, the sight was the same. And here he stood, in the middle of it all, clueless as to what to do next.

After his few moments of thought, Sam eventually pulled out his handgun, taking the time to give it a quick check over. Loaded and armed; he knew better than to assume things anymore. Keeping the gun in hand, he pulled his phone free with the other, dialling up Dean's number without a moment's hesitation. If he was lucky enough, then maybe he'd manage to get through to his brother. He had to try, at least. It was that, or get his ass kicked later for not even bothering.

"…pick up the phone, Dean."

He'd been walking back towards his room when the familiar tone of Rock You Like a Hurricane had begun to emerge from his pocket. He pulled out this phone, no his phone, that had been waiting in his room for him the night before and glanced at the screen.

Sam flashed up on the screen and he had it up to his ear in half a second. His brother sounded confused, but definitely himself, and Dean felt waves of relief roll over him. He began making his way double pace to the front gates while continuing to talk to his brother and keeping a look out for any of the monsters he'd run into with John and Jennifer the night before.

He approached the gates and squinted out at the darkness beyond them. He could make out the shadowy outline of his brother, holding a cell phone to his ear and a huge grin split across his face. He hung up his phone and moved forward, taking great big steps towards his younger brother.

"Sam!"

Finding out more about his current location took a back seat to finding Dean. The moment he'd discovered that the elder Winchester had been brought to this city too, it had felt as though a weight had been lifted off his chest. They'd faced the impossible before, and made it through as a team. And this time, he knew, would be no different.

He remained on the phone for the entire time, even as the conversation fell in to silence. It was almost a lifeline at that moment. And until he'd seen Dean with his own eyes, it wasn't one that he was willing to break yet. As the familiar face came in to view, Sam finally followed suit in hanging up his phone and tucking it away. The gun too was placed back in the waistband of his trousers.

"Dean." His relief was clear in both his face and voice. "What the hell is going on?"

Dean closed the distance between them and slapped a hand on Sam's shoulder, squeezing it hard. It was about as close to hugging as he was going to get at the moment, since he'd rather his brother not know how worried he'd been not knowing where he was. He didn't really want to admit to himself that maybe he shouldn't be so glad to see Sam, especially considering the reason they'd been brought to the place.

Sam had said he was fine, but years of unbreakable habit kicked in as Dean gave Sam a once over, looking for any injuries or anything out of the ordinary. Content that there were none he pulled back, dropping his arm to his side.

"Well, Sam. Looks like we've been tagged for a round of holy dodgeball," Dean said, grinning. "For a minute, I thought you weren't going to show."

He'd known his brother for long enough that the simple gesture told him more than Dean himself seemed to want to. It also told him that bringing up the subject was something to avoid. He stood there, allowing Dean the time to sate his need to be a big brother, and only once he had finished did Sam move again.

"Obviously someone has to be around to clear up after you, Dean. I guess they didn't want to take on the job themselves." He was trying to keep the mood light, but given the direction the conversation needed to head, he was doubtful it would last long. He needed information; they needed information so that they could get whatever it was they need to do done, and get out of there.

"Holy dodgeball? So it does have something to do with Castiel." There was a pause as he looked round, almost as though expecting the angel in question to be standing nearby. But the streets remained empty, and so he simply continued on. "Dean, I need you to tell me everything you know about all this."

[ooc: Sorry for disappearing like that. My internet went all screwy.]

"It isn't much," Dean said, following Sam's gaze around the empty streets before looking back at him. "I don't know if this is Castiel's idea or not. I haven't seen him since I've been here."

Dean crossed his arms over his chest, knowing that Sam was going to have a ton of questions he wouldn't be able to answer about their current situation. He wondered if he should've asked more questions since arriving instead of just accepting that things were the way they were.

"We've been brought here to fight a final battle between good and evil," Dean said, feeling a little bit like an ass as he said it. It sounded too dramatic for one, too final for another. For the first time he found himself thinking about what would happen afterwards. Would everyone be returned to their own reality, or...

"Maybe it's God, or a couple of Gods, I don't know," he continued. "But someone's brought us here along with alot of other fighters from all kinds of other universes to fight on the side of the good. And over there," he nodded towards the other town barely visible across Dead Man's Land. "Over there are where all the bad guys are."

Which meant there was a good chance it wasn't. Sam may not have met him personally, but he had faith in the fact that the angel wouldn't send them both to a new location without at least giving them a warning of what it was all about. No; instead, it seemed as though they'd been left in the dark yet again, and forced to find answers for themselves.

On top of the information that it seemed Dean had already discovered.

"A final battle?" He didn't even try to hide his disbelief. There wasn't any way that the information could be right, no matter how much Dean may believe it. "What do you mean 'other universes'? Heaven and hell?" It was the only assumption he could make. They'd seen a lot of things in their lives, but the idea of worlds outside of what they already knew wasn't something he was sure he could believe.

He turned his attention to the other buildings in the distance. The ones that mirrored the very city they stood in already. At the mention of supposed 'bad guys' though, he turned back. "Dean, you're going to have to explain this a lot clearer. You're not making any sense."

Dean huffed. He was already trying to explain it the best he could, but he should've seen Sam's reaction from a mile off. Now that he was actually the one saying it, he could hear how crazy it sounded. How had John made it sound more convincing?

"I mean like alternate realities," Dean said, sounding like he was a character in a comic book. "Or somethin' like that. Look, I know it sounds crazy, but I think this is the real deal. These people are from all over. Some of them, I don't even know if they're people."

He sighed, knowing he sounded like a raving lunatic. "Alright, you figure it out then. As far as I can find, we're here to fight a final battle. I don't know how or when or why us, but that's the way it's looking now. If this is some kind of dream or trick, be my guest." He paused, giving Sam a tight smile. "I'm not killin' myself this time though. Not unless I have to."

He'd been talking about his run in with the Djinn genie, but the moment the words left his mouth he realized that Sam might interpret them differently. He cleared his throat, realizing his mistake and trying to back peddle fast. "Come on, wait until you see the chicks in this place."

Twenty-five years worth of existence told him that he should be trusting Dean to tell him the truth. It was his brother; the one who had literally gone to hell and back for him. He had no reason, right then, to start playing him for a fool. Not when they'd been thrown in to such a confusing situation.

"Have you had any proof of it yet? What if-" -this was just another plot, spawned by Lilith this time? It wasn't a far fetched idea, afterall. She'd failed to keep Dean in hell, and she hadn't managed to kill him yet. She'd even lost Ruby in the process. "Who told you all of this?" Just so he knew who to avoid while in search of his own answers. If things matched up, he'd know not to doubt Dean's words.

The talk of death was returned with a serious look. One that clearly portrayed where his mind had wandered to. A death that had been for him; because of his own mistake. "Yeah. Sure." His voice was a whole lot more subdued than before, courtesy of that slip up.

Dean sighed, seeing that he'd clearly said something he shouldn't have. He clapped Sam on the shoulder, not removing his hand this time. It was the only way he knew how to say he was sorry without actually having to say it.

"What kind of proof, Sam? This guy named John told me everything I know about the situation. John Sheppard. He's some kinda pilot and he's been here for three weeks, which is about as far back as anyone can remember. He seems to have things down a little more than some of the others."

He shot Sam a sideways glance. He didn't want to mention Ruby, but he knew she'd pop up eventually and Sam would want to know why he hadn't said anything. He'd be damned if he let her get between them again. "First Ruby, now you," Dean said, turning his attention back to the gate. "It's only a matter of time before the Impala shows up now."

He remained tense, his expression serious. Dean had found himself a source of information, and if the elder Winchester seemed to believe the man, then Sam would try to too. In time. Of course, that didn't mean he wouldn't question every step of it. If they were there to fight a battle, then surely there were better soldiers they could've found. Why them?

"Three weeks isn't a whole lot of time. Besides, what if he's in on the whole thing too? What if he's just telling us this to stop us trying to find answers of our own?" Though he didn't doubt for a moment that this would be the end of their search for answers. It never was that simple.

"She's here?" At the mention of the demon though, Sam brightened somewhat. They weren't completely alone. And with Ruby there, they had new directions to send the hunt. She could go places they couldn't. Follow leads that wouldn't open up to them.

[ooc: ALSKDJFA INSANELY HUGE APOLOGIES FOR DISAPPEARING LIKE THAT. Uni/work took over completely. I'm sorry!]

Dean nodded, fixing his brother with a serious look. "No, yeah. You're right, Sam. I shouldn't just take things at face value. My gut tells me that he's tellin' the truth. Course, now you're here we'll get down to the bottom of it."

Dean's expression darkened at Sam's reaction to Ruby being there. he knew his brother hadn't meant to imply that Ruby being there was more comforting than Dean being there, but he couldn't help but feel like that's the way it'd come out.

"Yeah, she's here," Dean said, pushing Sam towards the city. "She's on the other side, though. So I wouldn't go lookin' for her. She'll probably pop up over here eventually anyway. 'Specially since she can't seem to stay away from you."
