WHO: Alcuin and Hermes.
WHERE: Farmer's Market to start.
WHEN: Week 15, Monday morning(ish.)
WHY: Alcuin decides to face his fear of going out unaccompanied to pick up some things for his master.
WARNINGS: Unconscionable levels of wickedness and flirting (I'm looking at you, Hermes.)
Alcuin could almost convince himself that he was merely going for a walk on the preserve if he tried hard enough. The sleepy morning sun shone down beautifully through the trees and he could hear the gentle woodland creatures beginning to stir in the underbrush around him, readying themselves for their daily routines as he and his master had already done only an hour before. He made certain to wear one of his heavier woolen sweaters that morning in preparation for his adventure and was glad of it when he stepped out into the crisp morning chill. His breath fogged slightly until he made his way to the main road leading to town, which had already been warmed by the sun.
It was the thought that he might be mistaken for a lost slave boy by a passerby that drove him to take the first purposeful step of many down the road toward town. He reminded himself that Anafiel had never forbidden any of them from visiting town and his new master had never said otherwise either, but there nevertheless was a marked difference between the two. There would always be a void at his side – a gaping emptiness his childhood chaperone should have occupied. Guy.
But poor Guy was gone now, buried with honor for fulfilling his debt on their master's property. He wondered briefly what ever became of it, now that the household and all of its assets had been liquidated, but turned away from such thoughts as a car passed him by on the road. It would not do to appear listless, without purpose, in front of people who might exploit it for their own gain. He straightened his back to stand at his full height and raised the small piece of paper in his hands to observe the many miscellaneous items listed in both the crude block letters of his master and his own, much more superfluous handwriting.
Alcuin channeled the single-minded purpose of a domestic with the greatest of ease upon reaching the town, assuaging suspicion and lewdness alike with nothing but casual disregard. He couldn't afford everything on the list with the small allowance he had been granted but he could certainly cut his master's journey to town in half, which meant more time at home with him where he belonged. Besides, he could always haggle some things down as he found himself doing now. “You ask too much.” He asserted confidently, holding up a small mesh bag of tomatoes for inspection. “Is it your intention to rob my master blind?”
“They're just out of season –“ Alcuin tilted his head and interjected smoothly. “Yes, they are. Which means I would gladly pay the amount requested for a greater amount were they in season, but they are not. You ask too much for too little.”
