Alice tended to the bulb she'd placed in the earth, covering it with dirt and seeing to it mostly out of instinct than anything learned. She didn't even notice the other slave's approach until he spoke, causing her to start and scramble to her feet. She brushed of the skirt of her dress, though her knees and hands still sported stains.
"Ah, I-I'm sorry!" she blurted out, biting her lower lip as she clasped her hands before her. "I was a little distracted. I get distracted a lot." She probably didn't need to preface every new meeting by letting people know about that particular thought, but she felt it best to warn them in case she nodded off or her mind wandered. "I wasn't bothering you, was I? You know. With the singing."
