Summary: The mindwipes never worked, never as well as they wanted them to.
The mindwipes never worked, never as well as they wanted them to. He remembered them, remembered the pain, shot them looks of pure murder when they ordered a wipe, but they never seemed to realize that it was because the wipes simply weren't working as well as they should've.
He knew it'd been done often. He could remember them being done, but never what they were erasing.
Except this time.
This time, the images and impressions were too strong, they lasted past the searing pain in his head. He remembered Zola, he remembered the pain of losing his arm.
And he remembered the man from the bridge. The man in his memories. He'd called him Bucky. Who the hell was Bucky? Was he Bucky?
Whoever that man was, Hydra's machines couldn't take him away from the Winter Soldier. He was permanently embedded in his mind. They were his memories, even if they made no sense, and Pierce and the others couldn't erase them.
But if he remembered, he'd be in for more pain. If he remembered, it'd mean he wouldn't be able to finish his mission. The impressions of the man at the bridge told him that they were important to each other somehow. The Winter Soldier didn't know how, couldn't understand that, but the feeling was there.
So he decided this man had to die before he remembered more, so he could continue to be useful to Hydra, so he could continue to make a difference in the world. Captain America had to die.
Maybe the memories would die with him.
