Hitomi still had nightmares, years later.
She was well into her twenties, and married, and she would still wake up, shivering and gagging down her dinner that wanted to reintroduce itself to her over the smell of death that lingered in her nose.
She did not regret her time on Gaea. She didn't regret Van. But every time a nightmare woke her, every time she felt blood on her hands, saw men fighting for their lives in her mind's eye, every time she could smell the burn of human flesh, she wished she could forget.
And she could never explain to her husband- he'd think she was nuts. She couldn't tell him about her first real love, about the war she endured at his side, about the fights and long nights and killing and the way he'd done his best to protect her. Setsuna would never believe her.
So she was left alone to deal with the aftershocks of war that still lingered, listening to the dead- to Folken and Balgus and the duke of Freid and that doppelganger- whispering in her ear, still talking to her, demanding to be heard over her mundane living.
She hoped Van was faring better than she was. She still spoke to him- he was married too, to Allen's little sister, of all people. And he never seemed the worse for wear. In fact, he usually sounded happy. But she imagined he'd always be haunted by the image of his homeland burning, too.
She figured she'd never be done seeing it, either. Gaea would stay with her for the rest of her life.
