Edward thought for just a moment that somehow the train had managed to take him from Munich to Rizenbul while he was sleeping when he stepped off onto the station platform.
It wasn't the countryside, the high mountains that loomed above him; Transylvanian looked nothing like Rizenbul, nor anywhere else in Amestris, really, except maybe up North near the Drachman border.
It wasn't the station itself- they all looked the same anyway, nor was it really anything else that tricked his mind into thinking he was home.
Across the platform, checking a pocketwatch and looking around impatiently, was a boy. A blond-haired, wide-eyed young man with a face so intimately familiar that Edward felt his heart clench up in his chest.
"Al," he choked out, leaving his suitcase unattended as he took first one step, then another towards the man. "Al!" His voice was louder that time, calling out with a desperate and disbeliving sort of pleading in it as his feet hurried him towards the ghost in the flesh.
The boy blinked and looked up, and Edward's feet nearly tripped out from under him and he could swear his soul stopped beating.
"I'm sorry, do I know you?"
Blue eyes. Not molten bronze, but bright blue eyes.
He spoke German too, Edward noted dimly as he stuttered over his words a second before he got his tongue to work in the right language. "Ah, sorry," he half-mumbled in German. "I thought you were someone else." He looked away quickly. Stupid. Stupid stupid stupid. You should've known it wasn't him.
"Oh?" the German boy chuckled. "Must be quite the someone to look like me and share my name."
Edward blinked once and looked back up at him. "You... your name is Al?"
He grinned. "Alphonse, actually. Nobody really calls me 'Al' anymore. Alphonse Heidrich. Nice to meet you." He held out his hand and smiled.
Edward's heart lept into his throat (he even has Al's smile) as he eyed the offered hand. He hesitated, then held out his left hand. "Edward. Edward Elric. Pleasure meeting you," he replied, forcing a congenial grin to his face.
Alphonse blinked a second, then switched hands and shook Edward's firmly. "So what brings a fellow countryman to Transylvania?"
He resisted the urge to correct him- it wasn't like he could say where he was really from. "Here to see a man about a rocket, actually."
Alphonse blinked again. "Orville, right?"
It was Edward's turn to blink. "How did y-"
"I'm here to meet him too!" the blond said excitedly, becoming suddenly very animate. "I was just waiting for a friend of mine to come pick me up." His eyes brightened. "Do you have a place to stay?"
Edward reeled from the sudden burst of energy from Alphonse. "Well, no, but-"
"Then you must stay with us!" Alphonse insisted. He looked around. "Where's your bag?"
"O-over there," Edward stammered, then found himself grabbed by the wrist and dragged along by the familiar stranger. He protested lamely, his mind struggling to catch up with what was going on.
"So you were staying by this child's side here?"
"I think I see Dorchett finally," Alphonse said, snapping Edward's thoughts back to the present.
"Dor-"
"Yup, that's him!" Alphonse grabbed Edward's bag and handed it to him. "Come on." His tone was just so enthusiastic, and that smile, oh god that wide grin, painfully familiar...
"Somewhere there is probably a child that looks like Alphonse."
Edward smiled slightly, taking the bag from him. "All right," he finally agreed, and followed him to his companion's car.
