Despite the stripped condition of the land from years of overworking mines, the wind was still pleasant in Xenotime. It was warm, without being too warm, and not as dry as one might thing it would be, carrying just enough moisture in it to avoid making the place a desert.
Russell stopped work for a moment, closing his eyes and letting the wind rush over him. Belsio didn't say anything about Russell's break, and Russell appreciated it. The ground was more uncooperative than Russell would've guessed it'd be, with the beautiful trees Belsio had already gotten to grow.
Russell poked at the ground in front of him with his spade and sighed. The ground was tough, and lacked a lot of the essential nutrients it once held, back when Xenotime was a city of green, not a city of gold.
"That's because we've stripped the land," Belsio said, walking over to him.
Russell looked up at him. "It's a shame we ever found that first strain of gold. We've killed the land with our greed."
"We've done our best at it, that I'll agree with," Belsio said. "It's not beyond redemption, but without that alchemy of yours and your brother's, it might take quite a bit longer than it will now."
Russell ran a hand over his face. "I can't believe I was going to help make this worse," he groaned. "Even with our alchemy, this is going to take a long time. And I hadn't even cared about the damn gold."
Belsio shrugged. "Everyone has their reasons. And you're taking responsibility for it."
Oh yes, they were definitely taking responsibility for it. Back-breaking work and being the pariahs of town, chased out of stores and restaurants for being liars. It was no wonder Edward was as pissed as he had been when he finally cornered Russell and Fletcher.
"Come on," Belsio said, putting a hand on Russell's shoulder. "Let's get back to work. Standing around idle will not breathe life back into this tired soil."
"Right." Russell gave his gloves a tug, make sure they were on, then went back to work. At least the wind was still pleasant.
