A Far Green Country "Those were the stories that stayed with you, that meant something, even if you were too small to understand why." - Samwise Gamgee
"Brother?"
"Hmm?" Ed looked away from the sky, where the deep violets were rapidly giving way to shades of golden coral, down at the gray eyes looking up at him.
Alphonse rolled over onto his back so he was no longer twisting his neck around to look up at his brother. "Do you think they still remember us, back there?"
Edward was quiet as he smoothed his little brother's hair back, and looked to the sky again. Already, a crescent of sun was visible over the far hill. "I know some of them do, and always will. Beyond that, I don't know."
"I bet they will. I know they'll remember you." Al smiled. "The Fullmetal Alchemist. The dog of the military who worked for the people. You made a difference there, there'll be stories, you know."
"Hopefully they'll neglect to mention anything about height." That drew a laugh from Al, and Ed glanced down, giving him a faint smirk. "I didn't do that much, though."
"Are you kidding me?" Al shook his head slightly, and pushed himself up from Ed's lap to look at him. "What about Xenotime and all those other places? Remember the boy in Youswell? I bet I know what his grandchildren are going to say. They'll say, 'Grandfather, tell us a story, tell us the one about the Fullmetal Alchemist, how he defeated the evil Yoki and made the town shine again.'"
Ed rolled his eyes and smiled, looking away. "You exaggerate." He looked back to his brother again. "But if they ever did tell stories like that, they're going to ask about you. I wouldn't have gotten as far as I did without you."
"I know." Al's lips curled into a soft smile. "Why do you think I insisted on coming with you?"
Ed grinned and locked his arm loosely around Al's neck, pulling them both back onto the grass under the sunrise as he tousled his hair. "Modesty isn't one of your strong points, Al."
"It's hard to be modest when you're someone who never lost to the Fullmetal Alchemist in a fight."
That made Ed stop and push Al away to pin him. "That's not true anymore, you little brat."
"Or maybe I just let you win." This time, Alphonse's smile was positively wicked.
