Edward felt like he was slowly being brought back to life.
He still missed Al, every day, every night. That pain was still there, a heavy, dull ache in the center of his chest, that empty spot in the back of his mind where Al's thoughts used to tangle up with his until neither was sure where one ended and the other began.
But he was learning to breathe again.
He was even laughing, smiling a bit easier these days, since Alfons had come into his life. A man who looked so much like his brother, who smiled like that ghost that Edward missed so keenly, but he was different, his own person, a new sun that had risen on a new day in Edward's life.
For now, they were both able to ignore the fact that Alfons's time was so short. For now, they were both able to pretend that Edward's old scars, wounds and hurts weren't there. None of that would rob them of the time they did have.
Alfons made him smile, with his soft-spoken demeanor and his quick acceptance of everything about Edward that so many in that world would find to be crazy. Alfons didn't ask questions, he merely accepted that regardless of what he himself believed, what Edward believed was important to him.
It made Edward feel almost free enough to move on from his old life.
Lying in bed far later into the morning than either should've been, even cold mornings were warmer, the comfort of body pressed against warm body chasing away the chill and the shadows. The sun rose in the morning, and even long after it set, things were somehow brighter, in that cold gray city that had become Edward's new home.
Alfons was helping him discover all the things he'd denied himself all those years, searching for the key to undoing his mistakes and making amends to his brother. He learned to drink, to settle into an odd domesticity, too cook, to enjoy the touch of another person. He grew up, there in that apartment with Alfons, turned into the adult the weight of his old life had kept him from quite being.
And he'd learned how to love.
Someday, he would stand at Alfons's grave and bid farewell to yet another friend, to yet another loved one he didn't want to let go of, and he knew it. But in the meantime, Edward would continue to learn to live, continue to wake up with the new sun each day.
He would continue to keep moving forward.
