Edward stretched, glancing at the clock. Two in the morning. He rubbed the back of his neck, trying to work out the crick that had developed from leaning down over books too long without a break and glanced around the room for Al.
His younger brother was sitting quietly on the second bed in the room, legs folded cross-legged as much as a suit of armor of his size could manage, reading a book intently. At the sounds of Ed moving, the younger Elric looked up, and Ed could feel the smile his brother was trying to give. "Are you tired, Brother?"
Ed nodded, stretching again as he turned in his seat, marking his page in the book with a sheet of notes. "More like my head feels like it's gonna snap off if I don't stop reading for awhile."
Al set his own book aside, giving him a scolding look. "Brother, it's late. You need to sleep."
Standing up from his seat, Ed rolled his eyes. "I thought I was supposed to be the naggy brother. Trying to take my job or something?" he grumbled, kicking off his shoes and tossing his coat onto his bed.
That smile passed from one Elric to the other as Al watched him. "No, just learning from the best."
Ed faltered a moment, then smiled, a warm if tired look, then grabbed his pillow and blanket off his bed. "You're a dork, Al," he teased, tossing the pillow onto Al's lap.
His brother caught the pillow, giving him a curious look, and then Ed could swear he was trying to stick his tongue out at him. "I am not! If I am, it's only 'cause I learned from you!"
That got a raised eyebrow from Ed. "You're saying this to the guy who just spent six hours reading a text that's about three hundred years old?"
Al didn't reply for a second, this his shoulders slumped a bit. "Okay, so we're both dorks."
The elder brother grinned triumphantly before he realized what it was he just won, and gave Al a tired look. "Speak for yourself," he said, crawling up onto Al's lap and curling up, trying to get comfortable on the cold metal legs.
A large leather-palmed hand rested lightly on his head a moment. "You're the one that called yourself a dork first, Brother," Al pointed out, petting back his brother's hair.
"I did no such thing," Ed protested sleepily, his words half-garbled by a yawn he was trying and failing to smother.
"Of course not, Brother," Al agreed, his tone humoring, and Ed cast him a sidelong glare. "Go to sleep. We have a train early in the morning. You should've gone to bed hours ago already."
Ed waved off his brother's concerns, closing his eyes. "Yeah, yeah. 's fine." Another yawn. "Night, Al."
Even though his eyes were closed, and even though his brother's face never changed, cold metal unable to make expressions, he could feel the smile his brother gave him, the armor's hand carefully undoing the braid in his hair before petting it lightly again, the way their mother used to do when they were younger. "Good night, Brother."
