Who: Dante, Open to Niflheim
Where: Niflheim Library
When: Dante's first day (May 12)
Rating: PG-13 to be safe
Warning: No warnings
Summary: Dante decides to explore her new home, after 'marking' 'her' bed....

The fact that she was here, in this place that seemed to be neither Heaven nor Hell, was only further proof that she had risen above such trivial mortal things such as death. For centuries she had fought it back and it seemed she had truly bested it.

Not even those foolish Elrics could change that. Such stubborn boys... it was truly a pity she hadn't had more time to break Edward to her wishes. Where had it fallen apart? She'd underestimated the girl, it seemed. And her love for Edward. She should have moved sooner, taken the stone sooner...

But in the end, even her pets had been unreliable. No matter. She would begin again. She was used to starting over - with every new body came a new life, with every rebellion anew homunculus that needed to be taught and shaped and molded. And this little 'challenge' between unearthly powers would serve as a pleasant distraction while she made her plans.

But she couldn't remain for too long. The world needed her, after all.

After luxuriating in the large bed in her room - she imagined her terribly charming roommate would have no interest in the furniture, now that it smelled of cloying perfume and rotting death - she left to wander the dark mansion. The decorating was certainly atmospheric. A touch overbearing, really.

Once she found the library, she began pouring over the titles of tomes, intent on all the knowledge contained therein. She stood on her tiptoes, the edges of her dark red gown brushing the floor as she stretched for a book above her head....

News of new members had reached the Prince of Midnight, but he had yet to introduce himself over the communication system. All of the talking was giving Carrion a headache, so he took a break and put his obsidian crystal away. The device that he was going to give to Jazz for the avatar-spy was ready for the Cybertronian's examination, but he didn't quite feel like making a trip into the garage, not yet anyway. The one place in Niflheim he hadn't explored yet, surprisingly, was the library.

Gorgossum had a tremendous library. Inside his castle Inquisit, he could sit among the dusty tomes and read and learn and plan. His quest for knowledge never ceased, even when the Devil brought him here.

Carrion entered the library, not expecting any of his comrades to be there. Then he happened to glance to the side and saw a flash of dark red clothing. He raised his voice, neutral and wary. "Who is there?"

Dante dropped her hand, turning and smiling in a friendly fashion. So she was going to meet one of her 'teammates' in person, how nice. They seemed an interesting bunch, and so far very few surprises between them.

"Hello? My name is Dante..." Perhaps she should have revised her thoughts about few surprises. She blinked upon seeing the...man? who had joined her in the library.

He looked like one of Shou's experiments in life sewing....

Carrion knew that his smiles never looked friendly, so he simply nodded his greeting. "Salutations, Dante..."

The nightmare eels were swimming around in the liquid behind his glass collar, glowing as bright and yellow as summer lightning. It made his gray skin seem even paler and more deathly than usual. They mirrored the curiosity that Carrion couldn't keep from his face.

"A new arrival to Niflheim, I presume? I am Christopher Carrion..." As monsterous as he appeared, his manner was pure politeness, a gentleman... for the moment.

"Yes, quite new," Dante admitted, grasping the edges of her skirt and courtesying as she so often had done in her guise of Lyra. As disturbing in appearance as this individual was, it was almost comforting. She was used to being surrounded by monsterous creatures. Though this Christopher Carrion was something beyond even what she was used to.

She wanted to know what he was.

"I've only just arrived. A pleasure to meet you, Mr. Carrion."

"Then, welcome." He wondered how he had become so fortunate as to be surrounded by people who did not fear his appearance immediately. Apparently the Devil chose those who were not faint-of-heart, who were perhaps used to such sights. This relieved and irritated Carrion at the same time.

He was stilling getting used to the fact that no one here would be his minion. These were his equals, comrades...even if he didn't believe that of all his teammates.

"A pleasure to meet you as well, Ms. Dante. Which book were you searching for just now?"

"None in particular," Dante responded, folding her hands. "I only wondered what the library of the devil contained. It's quite impressive - it almost makes me miss my own." And the tomes she'd scanned certainly were of interest.

"Have you been here long?"

"I believe it has been... a few weeks." Time was measured a bit differently where he was from, so Carrion wasn't entirely sure. "I have been adjusting to the time difference, as it were."

He crossed the room where a few seats were placed. He gestured for Dante to join him. "Do you mind me asking... where are you from?"

"Has this little exercise been going on long, then?" Dante was curious. The whole idea fascinated her. She was well acquainted with getting others to fight her battles for her - it was oftentimes much easier - and the idea that God and Satan themselves took the same course....

It only proved she was as close to a god as a human could be.

"Central City," Dante told him, taking a seat. "The capital of Amestris." There was no harm in admitting that.

"I believe it has only just begun," he replied, also taking a seat in a straight-back chair. "You have arrived at a very good moment in time."

Carrion was already intrigued. Amestris sort of sounded like 'America' where the Hereafter Girl Candy had lived. However, neither the city nor country that Dante had named had ever come up in any book written on what existed on the other side of his world. "That is definitely not in the Abarat... nor I think in the Hereafter."

"The Arabat? Hereafter?" Dante questioned these things she'd never heard of. She didn't like this not knowing. Back home there was little at all she didn't know. She had shaped that world for centuries, after all. Her minions were everywhere, arranging everything to her specifications. Now... well, she hated true ignorance.

"My world." For a moment, he hesitated, then decided that it would do no harm. This would not be the first time he discussed his origin, but it would be the first time of actually showing someone a map of it.

The robes he wore didn't seem as though they had pockets, but they did, and from one of these, Carrion flourished a map and set it across the table between them. Colorful islands blossomed across the paper, each labeled by their name and time, and surrounded by the Sea of Izabella.

"I lived at 12 o'clock in the morning, on the island, Gorgossium." He pointed what looked like a dark piece of rock dominated by a huge castle and red mists. "Each island in the Abarat stands at an hour of the day... or night."

"How fascinating!" Dante leaned over the map, clearly interested. "I've never heard of anything like this...." It was humbling, to know how much more there was to learn and discover. There was more to the universe than the world she knew, than even the Gate and what lay beyond.

"And what an interesting island it appears you live on...."

Smiling now, he slid a finger over his island... what used to be his island. Though Carrion had no doubt he would reclaim it when he returned. "I wish I had a better picture for you. But yes, this is my home, where the Castle Inquisit is located. The Thirteen Towers of Midnight."

He was infinitely proud of them. "My family has ruled from there for generations..."

"How very impressive." Dante smiled, watching him trace the lines of the map. The devil had certainly put together an interesting and powerful assortment of champions, hadn't he?

"You must miss it terribly, I imagine. Tell me about it?"

"I'm glad you think so."

He looked up, regarding Dante with a steady gaze to her question. Well, she was here on Hell's own team and she could deal with his appearance. Why not? "Every horror ever imagined, every crime ever committed, every nightmare ever dreamed, has occurred at Midnight. At the deepest part of the night, where there is no sun set or sun rise, no hope. We have a forest of gallows, a garden of sins, a pit of slaves... It's all rather metaphorical, but made literal."

Dante was silent as she listened, intrigued. It sounded a nightmare place. Envy would have appreciated it, she decided. He did so love the torment and suffering of humans. Though she supposed she understood. Through suffering came enlightenment. And there was something beautiful in it....

"It sounds like something born of a madman's nightmares." She smiled. "Delightful. I'd like to see such a place, I think."

The response confirmed to Carrion that at least one more Niflheimer could prove to be a respectable comrade. At least he felt like Dante could be someone worth talking to more often. "It would be my pleasure to show you."

He decided to turn the conversation towards academics. "I came down to the library because I wanted to see if our resident doctor left any anatomy books around. I'm conducting an experiment..."

"Oh?" Dante tilted her head. What a truly interesting individual. She'd have to try and maintain a cordial relationship with him. He seemed the sort she could get on with - and learn from as well as possibly put to use.

"I've some experience with anatomical study. What manner of experiments are you conducting?"

Carrion smiled. He could always appreciate those with knowledge. "There is a place outside of Niflheim called the Bloodmire. For some reason or another, it is a swamp of dead bodies. I'm testing their skins to see if I use them to create soldiers. They are called 'stitchlings' back home."

He never had to make any of his own, but his grandmother had taught him the skill, as much as he didn't care to have it.

"Such a thing..." Dante breathed, the wheels in her mind turning rapidly, "would be of great use. Can you truly do that?" Forget what Shou did with his malformed chimeras, this was life sewing.

"I think I'd like to see this swamp full of bodies." Bodies always had a use. And perhaps she could home her own skills in biological alchemy....

She hadn't honed her skills to consistency. She'd created Pride, of course, but she'd also made that mess of a thing Gluttony.

Carrion nodded, milky hollow eyes noting Dante's approval. "I can. Among other things..." He collected the map, since they seemed to have moved on to something that was at the moment, much more interesting than his home world.

"It's only a short walk outside." He stood up carefully, making sure that the collar's cargo wouldn't slosh too much. "Unless you prefer to linger here a bit longer..."
