Tiresias and the Middleverse
Who: L [open]
Where: A cemetery in the "Middleverse" (between life and death), awaiting Metatron
When: L's first day (May 12)
Rating: PG-ish
Warning: No warning.
Summary: L died when he was 25 at the feet of Yagami Light. Now that his rival has been given a new body and put back on earth, his own restless spirit will finally be judged. (This is basically an introductory post preceding L's arrival in CU, where he will be rooming with Frank in Asgard room 205.) This scene consists of him waking up in a sort of limbo and interacting with a NPC onetime-appearing old grave digger calling himself Tiresias... without knowing who that is, much to L's annoyance.

Then I wasn't wrong... but, I...!

L bolted upright, his eyes snapping open and his senses reeling from the sudden onslaught of stimuli. The overwhelming noonday sun, the scent of freshly mown grass and damp earth, the cacophonous din of birdsong clashing with the roll and thunder of a busy street nearby. His skin itched... rubbing distractedly at the heavy black material sheathing his thin arms, he realized that he was wearing a suit. Since WHEN did he wear a suit? He reached towards his neck to loosen a tie that felt more like a noose. WHAT was going on? The last thing he remembered... ah.

It was painful, he recalled that much, at least. He brought one hand to his aching head, attempting to re-live the event that had ended his life. "Everyone, the shinigami...!" Those had been his last words, hadn't they? Trying to point out what was REALLY going on, while Light... "LIGHT," L said, gritting his teeth. He rose to his feet, his legs trembling slightly, leaning on a tombstone for support. He took a deep breath, and abandoned his typically monotonous, quiet voice. "LIGHT YAGAMI WAS KIRA! I KNEW IT ALL ALONG!!!" he shouted, beating his fists against the tombstone. Recovering, he noticed that the name engraved on it was one of his own false ones. His real name couldn't have been used, of course... so many would have wanted to defile the grave of the world-renowned detective. He had been lying atop his own final resting place.

"What are you yelling about?" a disgruntled old man asked, startling L after the silence of his approach. "You're dressed awful nice, for a nap in the boneyard... was there a wedding last night? Had too much to drink, eh?"

L decided that he wasn't a ghost. If an old gravedigger was scolding him for disturbing the peace, he must have been tangible. "Yes. Yes, I suppose so..." he said absentmindedly. "Do you know a Light Yagami, by any chance? I was... his... best man."

The gravedigger cackled. "How would I know him? My entire life has been spent dealing with the dead. Between digging and my part-time job at the morgue, I don't get out much. The people I meet are all cold and kind of stiff, you know?" he chuckled at his own attempted pun, while L fought the compulsion to twitch. "But I remember all of them... young fellow there," he said, pointing at L's grave, "Very strange situation. They said that he died of a heart attack, but his arteries were cleaner than whistles. The autopsy, completely inconclusive... wasn't even worth performing. I hate cutting into a young person and finding NOTHING... what's wrong? You look pale."

"Do I?" L asked, swallowing. He'd never been squeamish about death and dying... he was a detective, after all, with an extensive knowledge of forensics... but he wondered what he'd find if he could open the pine box six feet below him. A skeleton? A dried and shriveled twin? Or... or nothing at all? If he was dead and buried, what was he doing aboveground?

"Come to think of it," the old man said, craning his neck and staring at L, "you remind me of that... what... 'Ryuzaki?'. Must be your eyes... or your hair... something like that. They said that he was a genius. Are you a genius, kiddo?"

"Probably not," L answered, shrugging. He was already bored of this conversation, and his focused mind was already bent to a single purpose. Light Yagami. Sentence LIGHT YAGAMI to death for the Kira killings. "I need a phone," he said quietly. "Is there a house nearby?"

The old man shrugged cluelessly. "How the heck would I know? Maybe. Maybe not. You're kind of in the middle of nowhere."

"Oh? Thanks... um... where is 'the middle of nowhere,' in your book?"

"That would be the Middleverse. Some souls find their way here as they await judgement... the conflicted ones, usually, torn between heaven and hell. Good thing that you were just at a wedding last night, eh?"

L swallowed. Then realized that he didn't know the man's name. "..."

"Just call me Tiresias. " The old man said, with a toothy grin.

"Were you a woman for seven years? Are you blind? Are you a seer?" L asked, annoyed that the gravedigger did not seem to bear any resemblance to his mythological namesake.

"What?" Tiresias asked blankly. "I just thought it sounded cool. And there's no such thing as a 'blind seer,' kiddo. It's a... whaddyacallit..."

"Paradox," L sighed, turning to leave. Where he was headed, he was as uncertain as his eternal destination.

Slight problem, unfortunately. I blame not-well-done explanations of the setting that I should edit. As wonderful as this post is...no humanoids exist in CU aside from the player characters and NPCs. There's monsters and wildlife, but no people.

And...people aren't brought to the realm for Asgard without specifically being asked by Metatron. The explanation happens before the game, otherwise I'd be reexplaining everything...five hundred times to each character, you see? Characters for Heaven are visited by Metatron and have things explained before they're brought here - otherwise it wouldn't be ASKING them to come, when that's what Heaven's side does. It asks.

I'm ever so sorry for the confusion.

OOC: Ah, thank you. I was wondering when that would happen, the asking part, I mean. Is it OK to have this scene in the regular world, before L enters CU? I can edit to exclude mention of Asgard, and wait for Metatron, if that would work. Sorry for messing up... at least I understand now. :P

Sure, if you'd like. When I see the updated version i'll have Metatron pop in? Works for me - and if that's the case it can be a regular world or some inbetween death realm, wherever.

It's okay, because sometimes things aren't phrased clearly enough. I still have to work on it. <3

OOC: No, it's totally OK. Thanks for clearing that up! I'm working on the edit as we speak. ^^

And yet when he took a step forward, a man in white robes appeared. A small, modest golden cross dangled from his neck and his feet were bare. His longish blonde hair fell around his face and ended shortly after in a slow wave. The man's eyes opened slowly to reveal a soft, sincere blue as he stepped towards L.

His footsteps made no sound.

"Is there something you regret?" the blonde one asked, tilting his head slightly to one side as he extended a warm hand.

L took an involuntary step backward. "You must be Metatron," he said, the corner of his mouth twitching in a reluctant half-smile. "Maybe I regret something... you're supposed to know all that, though. So, I'm going to hell. Where Light Yagami is. Right?"

Metatron shook his head and took another step forward, his hand never falling as he held it out to the man. He took another set of steps until he could gently press an index finger to L's heart through his clothing and smiled. "Your athiesm counts little, L. What you do, why you do it and your affect on Earth determines where you go. Also...what I know and do not know of you matters little. It is what you admit and how you feel."

"Yagami has been taken by Lucifer, the follower of Satan. He has made a deal that he will receive a Death Note once again should he help their side in a battle between Heaven and Hell. Would you like a second chance to defeat the one also known as Kira, Yagami Light?"

L glanced sideways. Eye contact had always been difficult for him, but meeting those sincere, blue orbs was impossible. They were the kinds of eyes that saw through you... pierced you... destroyed you. "What I did... why I did it... that doesn't matter. I should be in hell, because my motives were impure. I understand now. I believe that you want me for the battle because I have a history with Light Yagami, and know a bit about what makes him tick. It just figures, that he'd agree to such a deal..." he paused for a moment. "If you'll still have me, I'm convinced. The chance to defeat Kira is too good an offer to turn down."

Metatron let L belief what he wanted. In truth, he came because God sent him to find L regardless of His reasons - and because Metatron himself wanted every soul that could have its chance to be redeemed. The blonde angel smiled as large, pure white feathered wings appeared behind him and stretched out as Metatron reached to take one of L's hands.

"Then come with me to the realm where you may have a chance to defeat Kira once and for all."

L allowed the angel to take his hand, still cynical, but letting a rekindled passion for life fill his heart. He was going to defeat Kira, after all. This would be his victory. "I'm ready," he said, meeting Metatron's eyes for a brief moment before he had to look away. "Where are we going? Is it all clouds and harps and halos, like some have said?"

"Heaven...perhaps, but we are not going there. We'll be headed to a realm created specifically for this battle. There are little pieces of Heaven in that land...as well as little pieces of Hell," Metatron informed him gently, his other hand finding its way to L's shoulder.

"There'll be a safe haven there, though. A building where others like you, working on the same side, will be able to stay together. We call it Asgard," he was murmuring as the world around them began to fade away.
Without moving, the angel was taking them to this place he spoke of...Asgard.
