Entry tags:finished thread, rating: pg, setting: niflheim, yako, zoe

Who: Zoe and [Open]
Where: The Niflheim's Mansion
When: Immediately after her arrival, around noon
Ratings: PG, subject to go up
Warnings: None that I can think of...but PG to be safe.
Summary: Zoe finds herself near the Niflheim mansion and immediantly begins to situate herself.

Zoe barked out a brief magical word and her double-bladed staff appeared instantly in her hand. The darkness swirled around her and Zoe narrowed her eyes as she tried to find some source of stability. As sudden as the darkness had appeared, it disappeared, vaporizing into thin air. Zoe did not straighten immediately. Instead she held her staff firmly with both hands, held diagonally across her body, her eyes flashing across the rather barren landscape for any sign of a challenge. Finding none, Zoe relaxed enough to dismiss her staff and study the land more closely.

A large mansion towered above her, only a few yards away. It radiated the presence of many, as well as a darker feeling that made Zoe curious. It was a menacing structure, and Zoe approached it carefully at first, tendrils of tar black mist melting away from her, remnants of the illusion she had been casting for the pleasure of others and her own survival. Running her eyes over the building again, Zoe stepped right up to the large and elegantly crafted double doors to knock boldly, announcing her presence.

She really couldn’t believe her luck. At the point where she was most desperate to enter this rather famed war, she might have actually been granted her wish. Zoe knew that fighting in the war had its risks…like the obvious, dying. But working with those of Hell also held its own traps.

None the less, there Zoe stood, her face blank and mysterious. Shadows danced across what could be seen of her face as she braced herself to meet whatever came to meet her.

Yako had been in the kitchen when she had heard the knock. At first, it took her a moment to realize what the sound had been; members of Niflheim rarely ever needed to knock, let alone on the front door. It made her slightly apprehensive.

Setting down the bowl of cookie dough she had been making, the blonde wiped her hands on the apron folded over her waist and made her way to the door. Opening it a bit, she peered up at the older woman standing outside. The visitor was pale in a way that was almost sickly, and the upper half of her face was obscured by a large hood.

"Hello. Can I help you with something miss...?" Yako offered a small smile, trying to be polite. It was hard, considering how on-edge she felt.

Just as Zoe was about to knock again, the one of the great doors creaked open. Peering down at the young girl, Zoe suddenly found it hard to believe that this was where the Niflheim resided, dark as it may be, and considering the circumstances. She looked so innocent and...young. Zoe knew Lucifer was by no means fair, but she didn’t think he snatched useless youngsters for fun either.

So the girl must have something important about her. But her face was so…Zoe sighed softly and examined the girl over again, her eyes hooded from view so the girl would have no idea where Zoe’s eyes were wandering. There was a tierd look about the girl.

Ah, whatever. Zoe though, abandoning her calculations. It had taken only a few seconds for her to take this all in, and the girl probably wouldn’t notice anything. So in a low smooth voice Zoe replied, “ I am here to join the Niflheim.”

It was straight forward, but it would have to do. Why else could Zoe have been teleported to this strange barren land? Backfired illusions did not have this sort of affect. There really was only one possible theory.

Sweeping back her hood with her hands, Zoe cleared her mind of all the thoughts and added, “My name is Zoe.”

"....oh." Yako blinked. "Lucifer brought you here then. Come on in." She stepped back and opened the door wide, but made sure she never turned her back on Zoe. You could never be too careful, especially with some of the people on this team.

"Um....well. I'm Yako. It's nice to meet you, Zoe. Despite the circumstances." Nervously, she tucked an errant lock of gold hair behind one ear, her large brown eyes studying the now-exposed face of her new teammate.

This Zoe didn't exude the predator-like aura of some of the others she lived with, or the cold, calculating look of others. Her staff looked rather menacing, though.

Despite the circumstances? Zoe pondered Yako’s words as she stepped into the dim winding corridor of the mansion. Zoe paused, waiting for Yako to show her where to go. Zoe didn’t like depending on others, but there was no way around it right now. Zoe also noticed the cautious way Yako treated her. This pleased Zoe, but also made her mouth twitch up on one side into a smile, especially as Yako’s voice twitched nervously, and she tucked her hair behind her ear, obviously a common gesture for her.

Zoe turned her attention to the inside of the house. It was abnormally dim, and the sense of darkness seemed to permeate through the walls. There were dark stains upon the walls, and Zoe could see the metal of a staircase a little ways down the hall.

Taking another glance around, Zoe turned towards Yako and waited, saying nothing.

Softly, Yako shut the door, grimacing at the menacing creak that accompanied it. "So...." Yako fought the urge to fidget under that amethyst gaze. Neuro's had been a glowing, acid green; Zoe's eyes should be almost normal in comparison.

"....is there something I can help you with...?" Was thatwhy the woman hadn't moved? Did she have luggage, or want information?

Yako shifted; Zoe was smiling, yes, but that could be for any amount of reasons. It was best not to presume, anything, and Yako still had absolutely no reason to trust her even as far as she could throw her.

Zoe regarded the nervous Yako for a few more moments before coming to a decision and throwing her former personality out the window. “Well, yeah! Where the heck am I supposed to sleep?”

One of Zoe’s hands went to her hip, her face shifting from a half smile to a scowl. A lot of people that had just met Zoe found her hard to keep up with, especially when she decided that she knew someone well enough to drop her mysterious cover, “And is Lucifer really just going to drop me off, ‘Hey, have a good time, eat some cookies.’?”

Zoe included that last part when she noticed the most out of place scent wafting from somewhere in the hall. Yes indeed, cookies. There was a small pang of sorrow as Zoe thought of how much her brothers would have loved to taste cookies again, but Zoe hid the sadness well as she regarded Yako with a completely different attitude.

Yako was, quite honestly, floored at the total 180 in personality. She blinked a few times; Zoe had seemed so...so composed and imposing on minute...then haughty and huffy the next. Whatever shroud of mystique that had surrounded the blue-haired woman had dropped, along with the small smile.

"I-..." Yako faltered for a moment, before regaining her bearings. "I wouldn't know; Lucifer's the one who assigns rooms, not me. Um." She shook her head, bemused. "And yes, he pretty much does leave us to our own devices, until the Trials."

It appeared that she would have to give Zoe the specifics of the so-called 'war' they had both been recruited into.

Zoe sighed. She could hardly blame Yako, yet her personality sure wanted to. Zoe compromised with scowling a little longer before dropping it. With an irritated tone Zoe asked, “Trials?”

Unfortunately for Yako, Zoe’s interest was peaking. And Zoe liked getting what she wanted, although she was, once again, painfully aware of how much she would have to depend on the child standing in front of her. After all, the Niflheim Mansion is not the greatest place to go stomping off in, especially when you have no idea where you’re going.

"Competitions. They happen every once in a while; us versus the people in Asgard. There have been two so far...this is really more of a 'tournament' sort of thing than a war." There. Biggest bombshell out in the air. She wasn't quite sure how somebody with a big, dangerous staff would take it.

At least her expression had returned to it's original blankness, despite the annoyed tone of voice. "Any other questions?" Her cookies still had a while to go, so Yako had some time to kill.

Oh lord, or whoever out there was watching. Tournaments? Like…jousting? Lord…Coming from a world of perpetual war, Zoe was considering whether she should believe this bit of information or not. How was a war over the dominion of the world fought nice and orderly?

Sheesh.

But still, Zoe was hard-pressed in finding a reason on why Yako would lie. Obviously she wasn’t interested in a fight, the way that she kept looking at Zoe’s staff.

If Zoe had come from any other world she would have cursed under her breath. As it were, Zoe was from the strangest of worlds and instead of cursing she simply sighed again and continued asking her questions, “Where are the trials held? What do they consist of? Are they one on one or some sort of massive group fight-it-out thing?”

((XD I keep forgetting to change my icons…))

"Well, I wasn't here for the first one, but it was Knowledge-based, from what I could gather. There were riddles or something...I took part in the second, and most recent one though. It was a one-on-one fight of 'Strength' in an arena. Not everybody gets to partake in each Trial."

Yako rubbed the back of her head sheepishly, remembering the quirk of her own fight: both she and the other girl's weapons had been transformed into large, pillow-like gloves. "I think they're different every time."

Zoe looked a bit put out at that revelation, which Yako filed away for later contemplation.

Great. This was definitely not what Zoe had anticipated. Finding out that the first trail was a trial of knowledge irked Zoe. Naturally she understood the need for intelligence, but seriously, it was a fight for the world.

Well, Zoe didn’t have many questions left. Asking Yako the layout of the mansion would be pretty useless, seeing the size of it. Zoe would simply have to do with a guide. It seemed as if having Yako answer the door was coming in handy. Zoe seriously doubted that any of the other Niflheim would have been so…accommodating.

But true to her character, Zoe wasn’t very gracious. Instead she broke into Yako’s reminiscing and asked, “So any suggestions on what I’m supposed to do now? Besides wandering around hopelessly?”

"Well, there's always something to do in Emptiness--that's the town between our area and Asgard's. It's completely deserted, but there are movie theaters, gyms, hotels, restaurants, stores..." Yako shrugged.

"There are also a bunch of other area's here. There's the Bloodmire and Deadwoods, in our area, though they can be kind of dangerous. There's a big lake somewhere...the farther away from this house you get, the safer the area generally gets, barring any meetings with the more capable members on Heaven's team."

Zoe listened, slightly surprised a town between Asgard and Niflheim was still intact. It sounded like a neutral zone unless conflict between the two groups arose. Maybe Zoe would go and look for some. Idly wondering if she would get punished for that sort of thing, Zoe suddenly scented to cookies again.

Lord they were annoying, yet Zoe’s stomach squeezed in protest as she thought about leaving to Emptiness. Zoe laughed quietly to herself before saying, “So can I have those cookies I smell?”

Zoe was still slightly incredulous about them, although she remembered the once popular phrase “Join the dark side, we have cookies.” But whether or not they were actual cookies or just some tricky scent, Zoe was hungry. She had just come from the streets and hadn’t eaten in a while.

"....sure." Why not? She had cooked stuff for her teammates before, and she had no reason to deny Zoe food. "Just let me take them out."

Yako started back towards the kitchen, fairly fast for somebody of her stature. She snagged an oven mitt and withdrew the tray of chocolate chip cookies in one fluid movement, before digging up a spatula. Soon enough, ll of them were quickly cooling on a plate.

Zoe tagged along after Yako, her cloak swirling in regular patterns around her feet. The girl was fast, and it took Zoe several quick long strides to keep up with her. There was no way Zoe was going to be left behind in that blood stained hall.

As Zoe walk-ran behind Yako, she did her best to memorize the way to the kitchen. If she got lost, she would at least have some sort of landmarks.

In the kitchen, Zoe leaned against the wall, silently watching Yako work. She apparently was very skilled and comfortable in this. It was something that Cassandra had excelled at when she had a chance. Zoe…not so much.

Yako tried one of her confections, holding it in her mouth as she offered Zoe her pick of the plate. They were golden and crisp; luckily Zoe had mentioned them before they had begun to burn.

Zoe reached out a long fingered hand and neatly plucked one of the cookies off the plate at random.

Zoe wasn't uncomfortable with the silence. However, as she took a bite and swallowed, she found herself pondering a question to ask Yako.

As hard as it was for Zoe to admit, she would need allies, and although Yako seemed the most unlikely of people, she was more than willing to help. Zoe would see.

At least Yako was honest, and Zoe needed to learn more about the other people she would be working with. It didn't take Zoe any supreme intuition to figure out that the rest of the Niflheim were not all Yako-like.

"So tell me about the rest of the Niflheim."

"Hmmm..." Yako nibbled on her sweet contemplatively, deliberating how she should answer. "Well, most have some ability that sets them apart from normal people, as you'd imagine. Walter's dead, and has a demon, Flauros is a demon, dunno about Banru but he's not fully human, Medusa's a witch, Midvalley's a musician, Jazz is a robot..."

She stopped to chew and swallow, but failed to resume her speech. She wasn't sure she wanted to talk about the people she was close to here to a stranger.

Zoe didn’t quite sense that she was approaching a testy subject for Yako, but she didn’t press on further simply because she had tired of the question. However, she did venture, “Any healers?”

Then Zoe finished her cookie in two bites, rubbing her fingers together so the crumbs sprinkled down onto the floor. While Zoe waited for an answer, she pondered what Yako had said. So the team was very diverse. Perhaps Heaven’s team would be no different. It would certainly be a challenging field for Zoe, even if she was only “legally” allowed to fight during trials.

But the last question Zoe asked was less out of interest about the team than about Cassandra. It was probable that healer had been sucked into this war. Although Zoe wished to see her sister, she hoped Cassandra hadn’t been recruited. It would be a terrible fate for someone of Cassandra’s nature.

"Medusa. She, apparently, was a school nurse back in her world, on top of being a witch." There was a flicker of something in Yako's eyes and voice when she spoke about Medusa, though she masked it rather well.

It was more than likely that whatever was currently wrong with Yako--the dreams, the tantrums, the snippy moments that were becoming more and more frequent--were due to something the witch had slipped into her system during Yako's first few months in the game.

Zoe breathed another soft sigh, this one of releif. She completly neglected to see anything in Yako's eyes.

But Cassandra was not on this world. Even if she was, she wasn't with the Niflheim, she was with the Asgardians. Right.

Zoe didn't relish the idea of having to fihter her sister, and suddenly Zoe was glad the only fighting was at the trials. The mix of emotions made Zoe's mouth twist into an ironic half-smile.

But Zoe had one last question,

"And is there some sort of designated place to spar ro train?"

Zoe could only sigh softly as Yako mumbled an answer and glanced at a clock mounted upon the kitchen wall. Zoe grinned slightly when the younger girl jumped and then turned to Zoe apologetically, “I’m sorry, Zoe. I need to go. If you need anything, just ask me.”

Zoe nodded, her eyes curious as she watched the blond make her way out of the kitchen. After a moment of though, Zoe brought her hood back over her face and followed silently through the dim hallways.
