Entry tags:belphegor, l, rating: pg-13, setting: emptiness

Who: Belphegor and Open
When: A few hours after her arrival, late evening.
Where: Emptiness, near Niflheim's grounds.
Rating: PG-13 might go up.
Warnings: None for now
Summary: Having just arrived to this realm, Belphegor decides to explore, and promptly falls asleep.

She didn't like the Lucifer from her world, and as of now she still wasn't sure how she felt about the Lucifer here. He told her that he was working for Satan, and that seemed to be enough to ensure the demon's loyalty to the cause. If she could do something against the other team she would do it, and do it with absolute pleasure.

Objective 1: Observe the people; explore the surroundings. If she were lucky she might be able to observe someone from Asgard.

Objective 2: Continue observing.

Objective 3: Find a way to unleash a plague on Asgard.

The demon never explored without wearing a white cloak, nor without carrying a staff around, and today would be no different. She slept out of the manor with the found object in her hand, and quickly made her way to the barren city like structure of Emptiness. Samael, she could tell this place was going to be odd. The entire area was pristine, and practically new looking. It was almost as if people had once lived here, but had disappeared suddenly. For a moment, Belphegor wondered what might have happened to them. She then promptly decided that she didn't care.

"Grocery store, gas station, convenience store, music store, jewelery shop, over-sized department store, hotel, hotel, apartment," she checked off the buildings, then added, "Wonder if this place has a mattress shop?"

But, it wasn't the time to be mattress shopping. It was time for observation, and she knew that the high points made the best observational places. Now, where to make her perch? A building? Perhaps. A tree? That might be better, and it just so happened that Belphegor had just come across a nice tall, and sturdy looking tree. Without hesitation she held onto the staff with her left hand, and quickly ran up the trunk of the tree till she reached the first limb, and from there she leapt to second, then to the third, and finally until she was twelve feet off the ground, but still on a sturdy branch.

Now at a nice advantage point she looked over the place. Surely someone would come out.

And then she fell asleep.

It had been a long and very frustrating week for L so far, and it wasn’t even over. Between the limited information he had managed to get out Asgard and the failed spy attempt he was not exactly feeling overly comfortable about the situation he was in. Luckily his ventures into the Emptiness had paid off and he had found four potential locations that could provide him with suitable protection and shelter when he left Asgard.

He hadn’t been entirely honest with Jophiel on the matter. Yes, he wanted to leave for the reason he had given, but that wasn’t all. The people in Asgard were an unnecessary hindrance and potential threat to his safety and security. The last things he needed were people questioning his decisions, or learning anything about him or letting things slip to the opposing team.

L had been out longer than usual today taking pictures of the emptiness and various useful buildings for his own personal records. It was starting to get dark by the time he decided to return to Asgard. He slung the camera bag over his shoulder and began the walk back, but something out of place caught his eye.

There was a rather tall tree with something white up in the branches not to far ahead of him. Curious, he decided to investigate the matter. After all, with the emptiness being as clean as it was it didn’t seem likely that some trash had got caught in the wind and blown into the branches, and certainly not trash of that size.

He changed his course, crept close to the tree and looked up within its branches only to find that a person sleeping within it.

He had no idea if this person was friend or foe but he’d soon figure it out. L pulled the camera out of his bag, lifted it up and took a picture.

Despite Belphegor's narcolepsy (so to say), she was a light sleeper. A skill that she had taught herself all through out her existence. It should go without saying that when L's camera went off, Belle was jolted awake. The sudden surprise followed by the fact that the branch wasn't that wide to begin with caused the demon to nearly lose her place. She quickly righted herself, managing to swing herself into a squat position, feet on the limb of the tree. She then looked down, and spotted a young Japanese male holding a camera.

So, it was he who had taken her picture. For what reason, Belle didn't know. All she knew was that she was more than a little irked. She grabbed her staff, then leaped down from branch to branch, till she jumped from the final one, and landed in front of L. During the process her white hood had fallen back, revealing the whole of her head.

At this moment, she studied the young man. He appeared thin, lanky, a bit tired looking, and simply not the best looking person. Appearance alone, she gathered that this man was either some sort of photographer, or there was something more cunning to his plan. Either option brought the question of why this man had taken her picture. No matter, Belle knew that she would have to be careful.

"Taking someone's photo while they're sleeping isn't very polite." She said pointedly.

L internally swore as he watched the woman wake up and perform an almost acrobatic move on the tree branches above him and grabbed hold of her weapon. She could be bad news for him if she was an enemy or looking for a fight as it was obvious that she was extraordinarily agile and quick, more so than normal. There would be no way he could win if he had to go up against her physically.

The detective forced himself to remain calm, but allowed for a small reaction; He leaned back and fumbled clumsily with his camera when she landed in front of him.

“It isn’t? But it’s my hobby.” L gave the woman a confused and almost apologetic look, Then he took two more pictures in hopes to distract her with the flash long enough to try to remove the memory card and slip it into his sleeve. He didn’t want to take any chances. “I like to catch people off their guard.”

Belle wasn't looking for a fight, but this man's constant photo snapping was starting to really irritate her. Still, she had to retain her cool, lest she make a fool of herself. Every time L snapped Belle's photo, she would sidestep out of the way, flinching against the flash of light, and making a noise not unlike that of a cat hissing.

She hated bright flashes of light. She hated having her photo taken, and she hated not knowing what this person was going to do with the photos. Now, it was when L had said, "I like to catch people off their guard," that Belle's composure lost some of it's structure.

"You like to catch people off their guard? You always take photos of women while they sleep?" she right quickly twirled her staff, now holding it with both hands. "What do you intend to do with those pictures young man? Something perverse I bet!" She quickly circled him, and despite her anger she couldn't bring herself to attack.

He was so scrawny looking that beating him up wouldn't be fulfilling. Plus, Belle didn't know what he had planned. "Explain your case, or suffer the consequences for your perverted voyeurism," she calmly, but firmly commanded.

Nobody said that she was the most emotionally stable of people.

L replaced the camera back in its case in order to avoid provoking the woman further. With her holding her staff like that and circling him, he didn’t want to take any chances.

“Not always when they are asleep, and not always women either.” He answered, watching her carefully just in case she decided to strike at him with her weapon. It didn’t seem very likely he would be able to manage avoiding an attack if she wanted to hurt him, and there was little he could do right now about the matter other than continue talking. Trying to get out of her range would only arouse suspicion or could even prompt her to attack. Instead, L just stood slouched and looking somewhat oblivious and confused as to why she was asking him these questions.

“When people know they are being photographed they tend to act too aware of the camera. Taking pictures while they are oblivious makes the photograph appear more natural,” L explained. He certainly wasn’t a photographer, but he had experience with people who were aware that they were under surveillance.

“I imagine I will be putting my best photos in a portfolio and presenting them to a potential employer should I ever decide to change this from a hobby to a profession. Until then, I believe there is much work to be had as far as improving my skills go.” He offered a small smile in hopes of appearing friendly. All the while he was wondering why everyone seemed to accuse him of being a voyeur? He certainly didn’t find himself aroused while spying on others, even if they were engaging in sexual activities. It was surveillance, and it was his job.

He scratched the back of his neck. It would be better to focus the subject on her now before she started to inquire further about his photography skills. “Why did you choose that particular tree to sleep in? It doesn’t seem very comfortable for such an activity.”

She blinked, and loosened the grip on her staff. She now held it with one hand, and placed the end of the staff on the ground. His explanation had satisfied her somewhat, even so, she wasn't flattered. There was just something about this young man that bothered her, but she could not place her finger on it. Instead of dwelling on it, she listened to him.

"When a woman has her picture taken while unaware that can cause problems. For some women, such an act as the one you pulled can cause a trigger," she explained calmly. She might not be speaking of her own experience, but she knew a few things.

"I did not choose to fall asleep in that tree," Belle started, then paused. If he had been paying attention to the journal system, then it would be no secret that Belphegor had a sleeping problem. How to explain why she was perched up in that tree anyway, though was another problem.

She sighed, and relaxed her composure. "I have always enjoyed high places, ever since I was a young woman. The higher up, the better. There is a sense of freedom, wonderment, and fear to be had by being in such places."

“I shall have to keep that in mind from now on.” L was relieved to see that she relaxed a little, but that didn’t mean he was out of danger yet. The detective had been paying close attention to the communication system. He knew that Niflheim had a new member among them that seemed to fall asleep during her conversations with others.

He rubbed his finger against his lower lip thoughtfully. She was still new here, and it was possible that she had not fully learned the names and faces of her teammates. Whether she enjoyed high places or not, this woman had chosen a high branch that been facing the mansion there were only so many conclusions one might reach for such a situation. “You fell asleep in a high place awfully close to Asgard’s headquarters. Should an Asardian happen to spot you, they might conclude you were conducting surveillance on them.”

"Smart boy," she said. She didn't relax anymore though, because she had to remain alert. Just because this young man had told Bel something she believed, that didn't mean she was safe.

"Why the concern?" she asked, "If you took a photo of a Niflheimer they would think that you were spying on them." The demon didn't know which side L was on, nor did she know everyone that roamed the halls of the Niflheim manor. If this man were from Nifleim then he was awful close to Asgard himself. If he was of Asgard then a lot more conclusions could be drawn.

"I would say, if you are of Niflheim then you are close to Asgard as well," she folded her arms just below her chest, but still kept a hold of her weapon. "If though you are of Asgard, then your photography could be questioned. Do you often take your camera hoping to catch people unaware?"

“If I was intending to spy on anyone, wouldn’t it have made sense for me to turn off the flash before I took the picture?” The truth was that the flash on the camera was automatic and L had not realized that it had gotten dark enough for it to activate. Of course as he was posing as a photographer, it would have been expected he knew this. So it should seem as though the flash occurred intentionally.

As for the other question she had for him, L gave her a small smile “And yes, I often bring my camera with me. You never know when you are going to run into someone.”

"Yet it is getting dark now. Perhaps you are not a spy, for if you were you wouldn't seek during the dark," Bel answered back. Then she looked at the camera, and back up at L. "Those photos will not come out normal, just so you are aware."

Well that was only partially true. The photos would show Belphegor in this form, but it might also catch a dark fiery aura around her. It really depended on the camera itself.

"Now, is there anything else you need young man?" she asked.

“Why is that?” L asked tilting his head slightly to the side in thought. Considering his current life, things people classified as ‘not normal’ could be a whole range of things. After a moment he made a thoughtful noise, reopened his camera case and held pinched between his fingers just below his chin, “Did you break my camera?”

After a moment of studying it, he zipped the case shut, “I suppose that is all for now. I’ll be sure to send you a copy later.” It really wasn’t all though. The detectives head was buzzing with questions, but considering yesterday’s incident he didn’t want to continue pushing his luck when it came to dealing with his enemies.

All she did was smirk at his question, "You would be more advised to pay attention to certain things young man," she answered him. He was a strange person, a strange human in Bel's eyes; not that that was saying much. She would have to go back to Niflheim and figure this out. If he were an adversary then figuring out even the simplest thing would be beneficial.

"No, I don't break cameras," that question was now answered.

It appeared that L might be leaving soon, but there was one last question that Bel had to have answered; even if she had to divulge her own information. "What is your name, young man? I like simplicity, and referring to you as young man gets tiring. I imagine that there are several young men, and I would hate to refer you as 'young man A'."

“I can assure you that I am not a ‘Young Man A’.” Infact L was a bit further down the line when it came to letter names. But this wasn’t something he was going to make known. He wasn’t planning on using the name ‘L’ until he had established some security for himself in this place.

He had to supply her with some name though, and It seemed best to not use the name ‘Ryuuzaki’ in this case as it could quickly identify him as being one of Asgard’s team. “You may call me John,” He answered, mentally filling in the last name of ‘Doe’.

"John? I take it you are of American, or European descent?" Bel found it highly unlikely that two people of Japanese descent would name their child 'John'. Still, Bel had seen much stranger things during her existence. "Very well, John," and now she needed to think of a name.

The funny thing about angels and demons was that they never had just one name. Belphegor also held the names of Chemos, Ishtar, Inanna, Baal Peor, Belle Montague, and Eddo Shru. (Belle was still bewildered over how humans came up with that name.)

"As for myself, you may refer to me as Belle. Now, if you would excuse me I just remembered that I had come here to see about finding a pillow shop."

Not entirely true, but at this point she might as will look for one. Without saying another word she pulled the hood over her head, and headed straight; not heading towards Asgard, or Niflheim.
