exploration
Who: River and (open)
When: shortly before midnight
Where: inside the house
Rating: PG-ish
Warnings: none I can think of
Summary: River does some exploring.

She closed her eyes, moving around the room slowly, swaying as though some beautiful music entranced her. When she found a wall she pressed her hand flat against it. Using the hand as a guide, she went in a slow circle of the room, humming softly. Not once did she open her eyes.

She went around several times, eyes always closed, until she had mapped the room in her head.

Mitch was usually trying to fall asleep during this time, or trying to secretly read a new mystery book under the covers with a flashlight, but he found himself doing neither this evening. For some strange reason, the bedroom he shared with Metatron seemed to feel warmer than usual. Instead of bothering Metatron to mess with the air conditioning, the young man decided to grab a glass of water from the kitchen.

'Lots of ice,' he thought. 'Then I'll be okay. Maybe I'll grab a snack too, I'm kinda hungry.'

He could have taken the flights of stairs straight down to the floor with the kitchen, but he did another thing different by taking the 'scenic route.' He hadn't explored much of Asgard yet. 'Hopefully nobody will think I'm a nightstalker or anything. I'll just be real quiet if anybody's asleep.'

When he walked passed one room, he noticed the door was open. A glimpse of movement caught Mitch's eye. He turned to look. "Hello...?"

[ooc: I know where River is rooming in the Places of Interest, but I wasn't sure if that's where she is in this post. ^^; So forgive any confusing elements in my reply.]

She turned, eyes still closed, towards the door. "You're not looking for me. Looking for someone, but not for me."

"Eh?" was Mitch's less than brilliant response. There was a girl in the room. Was it Lina, Blythe, or Alessa? One of the other girls he hadn't talked to over the journal-thing yet? "Actually, I'm lookin' to go get a glass of water... at the moment."

Her eyes were closed. She appeared rather peaceful like that. He knew that he didn't - he felt anxious, but he probably looked irritated, with his eyebrows furrowed and slight frown. He tried to un-frown himself and not stutter so much. "Um, I'm Mitch. What's your, name?"

River laughed. "They call her many things. Like God, only that's sacreligious, shouldn't say it. Not Prince of Peace or Word of Hope or Light in the Darkness, but many things all the same. Always something, motion, movement, never nothing, changing all the time. A fractal series in reverse. The first two hundred digits of the numerical value of pi."

She opened her eyes, still smiling. "All these things and many more. And some things not even words - the sound of rain on the windows, a little girl's smile from twenty miles away, your heartbeat when you're praying. The taste of cough drops, the way oranges smell after they've been stuck with cloves. Handprints on glass."

She twirled around in space, bare feet graceful and soundless on the floor, her hair out behind her like a dark curtain. "She is all of those things and eighty-six thousand, four-hundred and fifty-three more... but mostly they call her River."

Mitchell was stunned. He had never heard anyone talk quite like that in his life. Nor had he heard anyone refer to herself in the third person, either. As he scratched the back of his auburn-red hair with his right hand, his nervous habit, he wished that he had something half as clever or beautiful to reply with.

However, Zen master he was not.

"I'm sure 'poet' is somewhere on that list, too. I don't think I have eighty-six-thousand plus things about myself, but it's nice to meet ya, River."

She pursed her lips and tilted her head. On another person, it might be considered coy or seductive, but on River it only seemed that she is staring deep into Mitchell's eyes, and somewhere farther beyond, into his soul. "Poets are immaterial," she said flatly. "Poets hide behind a lot of pretty words and incomplete deeds. Not a way to live your life. It's falsehoods and negative mastery."

His shoulders flinched. A deep-red flush immediately spread across his face and into the roots of his already red hair. 'Shit, I can't talk to girls,' he thought. River's gaze was so uncomfortable, he had to look away for a moment. 'And what the hell was that about?!?!'

"I didn't mean to say you were sayin' falsehoods or anything," he grumbled. "I ain't a poet."

He looked back. While he couldn't match the intensity of River's eyes, he did try. "...Sorry."

Suprisingly, her face split into a wide smile, crinkling up her eyes at the corners. It does little to change the intensity of her eyes, but she looked a little less frightening.

"You want to dance with me," she stated happily. It was not a question.

The smile and statement effortlessly disarmed Mitch. If the heat on his face was any indication, he knew he sported a new shade of red. He glanced at his white sweatshirt and the flip-flops on his feet. Not exactly dance partner material.

'Do I? Want to dance?' he thought. He almost wanted to run, but that was no way to live, either. At least he learned that back 'home.'

"I dunno, but..." Mitch stepped into the room, feeling so awkward he had to smile. River's happiness was a bit contagious. "Only if you want to dance... with me."

Oh god, was it too late to go hide under a rock now? 'No way to live your life.'

She laughed, but it was clear she wasn't laughing AT Mitch.

"Silly, she always wants to dance."

River sure was different. Not a bad different, and not even a weird different. He couldn't describe it if he tried. But she wasn't like anybody he had ever met, and that was certainly refreshing after all the people he had never wished to meet.

He joined in her laughter, too. "Is dancing hard to do? I've never danced before."

River breathed a sigh of happiness. "Dancing... dancing is like the first snowfall of the year... it's like falling in love, it's like flying, it's like... it's just as essential as breathing and as hard to forget as your heartbeat. There's nothing like it, but everything's like it. Dancing makes you feel beautiful, even if you're not. It makes you happy, even if you're not."

She smiled and closed her eyes, dreamily. "Dancing makes you whole... even if you're not."

"If I knew dancing could be all that, I'd have started sooner," he mused as he put his hands in his pockets. Mitch wondered if River had always know these things about dancing, or if someone had taught her about them. "Everyone else told me to stand still, and stand still until I couldn't stand it. Or they'd yell at me to run until I couldn't stop running."

She faced him, eyes open wide now. "Running's not practical. Stress placed on knee joints is exceptionally taxing. Destroys nerve fibers."

She held out her hands. "Dance with me."

Mitch laughed, but it was obvious that he wasn't laughing at River. "You're right about that."

There was a moment of pure panic in which he was sure that he would mess everything up. But then, after a breath, he remembered what she said: Running's not practical.

So he closed the gap and reached for her hands.

River shivered with delight as she grasped her new friend's hands. A jolt of electricity ran up her arms and she smiled.

She started out easily, stepping from her left foot to her right, waiting for him to follow.

It wasn't often that Mitch felt this warm inside, by just letting loose and not worrying so much about if someone was going to hurt him, or get hurt. This room, this moment with River, was just... simply happy.

He followed River's movements, their arms swaying in a gentle arch.

River led for awhile, holding hands, twirling with her newfound partner.

Then suddenly she grabbed his wrists and pulled herself towards him, until her nose was touching his.

Mitch was glad that he hadn't made any weird startled noise, but his indeed startled and incredibly nervous now that their personal spaces were nose-to-nose. He never really thought about the attractiveness of eyes before, but he did notice that River's eyes were as beautiful as they were intense.

"Hey-lo," he gulped.

She giggled. "You're prettier up close, did anybody ever tell you that?"

She backed away from him, twirling and spinning, the music all obviously in her own head.
