Summary: Fresh from weathering a new set of mind games he's not allowed to fight against, L is riddled with doubt, guilt, and uncertainty, along with the knowledge that surviving the next week will be difficult even by CU standards. Wishing for some peace of mind and desperate for some form of non-antagonistic human contact, he goes to visit the two sleeping women and encounters Metatron, who might be able to help him soothe the storm in his soul.
L fingered the brown-and-white striped scarf, winding it around his neck and glad that no one would find it overly out-of-place due to the cooler weather. He had picked it up the day before in Emptiness for the purpose of concealing the bruise around his neck, which was identical to the sort one would see on a corpse cut down from the gallows. Fox whimpered slightly, rubbing against L's legs until the detective knelt and scratched him behind the ears. Barring his occasional interaction with Frank, L had been close and withdrawn lately, keeping to himself and being more vague than usual about what he was up to. He had grown to distrust and dislike even members of his own team, lashing out at Maria, Mitch, and especially the new person, the Sith who seemed to place himself far above the people surrounding him. One good thing had come of it all, though: L and Fox had bonded. It was a quiet, odd friendship, but they were perfectly matched. Both of them were deviously intelligent and possessed a feral sort of disregard for authority, and they reveled together in their mutual need for a like-minded individual. Fox had not bitten L, and L had not called Fox a "monster", for weeks. But the time spent away from his allies was taking its toll on L. Without speaking, or interacting, or possessing a motive to forge and maintain friendships outside of the rough rendezvouses with Light, L was becoming angry, skittish, and fractious. In his efforts and attempts to somehow get close enough to Light to kill him once and for all, he was compromising himself and allowing his physical and mental health to deteriorate. He hurt himself on Light's command, and even put aside his own will to live, in order to win the game. His drive to prevail was working against him, and unraveling everything he used to value.
Leaving his room, he wandered down the hall towards the room Metatron had referred to, thinking of visiting Alice and Lina. Somehow, sitting quietly in a room with a pair of untroubled sleepers was highly appealing to L, at the moment. They would not attack him, or give the paranoid detective any reason to attack them. He would listen to the soft sounds of their breathing, and know that he was not alone in some way. Brushing his thumb softly against the scarf, he pushed aside the door and entered.
