Of marshmallows and apple pies
Who: Jazz, Midvalley, Dorian, Morana
When: some time before the conclusion of the trial
Where: the grass planes between the forrest and the town of Emptiness
Rating: PG-13
Warnings: none at the moment
Summary: The barbeque of Jazz, Dorian, Midvalley and Morana.

What a nice day, Jazz thinks upon arriving at his chosen area of camp fire making. The sun was shining brightfully on his armour, warming his skin deep into his core.

With a resounding Thum he puts down a large metal box. Within this 'carrying case' he has assembled all parts needed to built a comfortable habitat for the little mummy boy Dorian. With a smile he begins to put the thing together, fully knowing that when it would be finished the chamber would be able to compact into its smallest frame upon a pushed button.

To his side there lies a large amount of dried wood awaiting the time that his guests would arrive.

{AN: Dorian will be fetching Morana and they'll be there shortly~!}

Jazz had been very nice to Dorian since the first time they'd spoken to one another. This is why the mummy had invited him to that party all those months ago, and this was why, today, he had no qualms about bringing Morana to meet him and his friend, Midvalley. Jazz had provided him a location and the directions to get there. And as far as Dorian knew, he only needed to bring Morana.

So he went straight to her room after feeding his pet fish. He knocked lightly on the door, one hand already in his bag of marbles, ready to change form for walking to the barbeque without incident. But he wasn't going to change before Morana saw him, as she only knew of him in this decrepit form.

Smiling, he shifted from foot to foot, waiting for Morana to answer her door and allow him to escort her.

On hearing the knock on the door, Morana's head turned away from the children's alphabet book she was looking at as she sat on her bed. She had spent the morning reading over the letters and practising writing words in a notebook in childish scrawl, which also sat beside her on the bedsheets. After working so hard, parhaps she deserved a break, and what better way than the planned barbeque outing with Dorian to meet some of his friends from Niflheim.

As she swung her legs over the edge of the bed and her bare feet took her towards the door, she smiled at the thought of being invited along. It really made her happy, even honoured that Dorian had asked her to come along with him. It was such a change from the times in childhood where she could only ever watch others laughing and smiling, never being able to join in herself. And she had never been to a barbeque, or even knew what one was. Still, she was sure it would be lots of fun.

Carefully, she openned the door of room 208, and smiled up at the mummy standing there. "H-Hello D-Dor-rian."

"Hi!" He waved softly, happy that she was happy. But then, Morana had always been a positive force, even when they'd been in the woods that one time. She was a hopeful person. And he knew that she'd been shortchanged of many of the same childhood experiences that he, too, had missed. This would be a fun day for the both of them.

Pulling out a different marble than usual, Dorian held it up to her. "Hee....He will help you g-get there. Essscort you. Nice man, okay? I am always...I am always there, t-too. But he will help you."

So Dorian fitted the marble to his throat and transformed, becoming a middle-aged gentleman with top hat, handlebar moustache, and cane. He bowed before the young lady. "Pleasure to meet you, Morana! Call me Percival! Dorian's asked I walk you to the barbeque." He held out an arm so that she may link hers with it. "Shall we be off, then?"

Smiling back in greeting, Morana closed the door behind her as she stepped out into the hall, turning just as Dorian was explaining himself, holding out the marble. She blinked in surprise, but nodded all the same, watching with some astonishment as Dorian seemed to disappear and this new person stood before her.

She recalled Dorian explaining how he had other souls in his marbles in the past, and how she has did her best to understand the concept. He did say they were all a part of him, even if they were different than Dorian himself, so she could trust Percival. After all, she knew her mummy friend would never set her up with anyone bad.

"N-Nice t-to m-meet y-you t-too P-Perc-civ-val." she replied, hesitantly taking the offered arm, though a little awkwardly.

Percival lead Morana to the barbeque sight without a hitch, rambling on rambunctiously about the premises of all the stories Dorian had ever read with Frank. Because Percival had the special ability to remember everything Dorian had ever learned, he recited their plots without flaw. Since Percival didn't get out as often as the others, he spoke as often as he could when he was out. Of course, eager as he was, he tried his hardest to not dominate the conversation.

When they finally reached the sight, Percival spotted Jazz immediately (he was hard to miss), and threw up his free arm, waving dramatically. "Hello, there! We've arrived now!"

Percival then said his farewells to Morana, called her a lovely lass, and transformed back into Dorian by the time they came up to Jazz.

With a huge grin Jazz waves back when the two humans arrive.

The female he assumes must be Morana; the other he has no idea who it could be, but also reminds himself that he doesn't know the faces of all players. Thus he is not very surprized when the man changes into the familiar form of Dorian.

"Hey, cuties," he says while giving both newcomers a wink. "Seems like Midvalley is a bit late for the show."

Once they arrived at the barbeque site, Morana thanked Percival for his pleasant company before he vanished, and Dorian stood in front of her once more.

Reagrdless, she blinked in surprise at the form she assumed was Jazz, looking very friendly and happy. She returned smile politely, eyes curiosly gazing at her surroundings, trying to take everything in.

"L-Looks l-like f-fun d-doesn't it?" she said to the mummy standing near her.

Midvalley got there just in time to hear her words. "Jazz will make certain everyone has fun," he said. He held out his hand to Morana, noting that she was a sweet-looking girl. Dorian he had seen back at the the party in Asgard and he was still, well, a mummy.

"The name is Midvalley," he said. He didn't add that he was a musician, as he was wearing his saxophone as usual. Aware that they might distrust someone from Niflheim, he put on his most charming smile. And he honestly meant them no harm.

Dorian did see the saxophone and was ebullient, as he loved music so much. Both residents of Niflheim were wonderfully courteous and friendly. He, of course, was still a fair shade on the defensive side, prepared to flee with Morana or fight, should something they do appear suspicious. But until then, he was more than happy to enjoy this afternoon to the fullest with his three friends.

"Music! Mmmusic and fooood, p-perfect day!" He exclaimed. "What will we d-do first? C-Candy apples? Please?"

Morana merely blinked at the hand for a moment, before carefully extending her own out. Well, it wasn't like she knew much about social interaction, she was still learning. However while she was uncertain what Midvalley was like, she perceived him to be friendly at least, and smiled softly back.

"N-Nice t-to m-meet y-you." she replied, tunring her head a little at Dorian's excitement, giggling a little, before nodding in agreement to her friend's statement. It did seem like today was going to be a lot of fun.

Now this'll become a very pleasant party, Jazz thinks while both watching Midvalley greet the Asgardians and looking for a tiny thing he put aside for Dorian earlier.

Finding it by touch memory alone, the obligatory picknick basket being full to the rim, he presents a shiny polished red candy apple to Dorian.

For Morana he has a flower. "A beautiful blossom for a beautiful lady."

His holo emitter itches to produce an avatar and greet Midvalley in a way deserving of his status. But he reigns the impulse in, as he really does not want to... shock his guests.

Midvalley gives Jazz a knowing wink and continues to smile at the two guests.

"So... you like music, Dorian? What kind is your favorite?"

Remembering his manners, he adds, "And do you like music, Morana?"

He doesn't really believe there could be such a thing as someone not liking music.

Dorian took the candy apple gleefully. The mummy examined it closely, almost like a child examining a recently fallen out tooth. He knew his jaw was too sensitive to chew the apple itself - he'd have to change form for this - but for the moment, he let his tongue taste the sweet coating.

He smiled at Morana, who was holding her flower. This was a lot of fun, indeed!

"Ummm..." He licked the apple again. "I like d-dancing music. Groove mmmmusic. Full of fun! All k-k-k-kinds, but d-dancing is mmmmy favorite."

While gently holding the little blossom delicately in her hands, Morana smiled at Jazz in thanks for the kind gesture, before turning to Dorian and Midvalley. Her mummy friend seemed to be enjoying the treat, to which she was glad, since he had been rather excited at the prospect of the candy apples. Meanwhile, she took a moment to register Midvalley asking her a question. Well she was still not used to getting involved in conversations, particularly in a group like. Usually it was just one on one. Nevertheless, she pondered a moment before answering.

"W-Well, I h-hav-ven't h-hear-rd m-much m-mus-sic b-but I d-do th-think I l-like it." she replied, looking quite happy and bubbly, very pleased so far with how the day was going.

[OOC: I'm not sure what order posting is supposed to go in? Since they both addressed Midvalley I'll make one more post as him. Maybe it could be Dorian, then Morana, then Midvalley, then Jazz?]

"You like to dance?" Midvalley asked Dorian. "Oh, right, you helped throw that party. You guys did a nice job with that."

The mummy dancing was an interesting mental picture.

"You haven't heard much music?"

This was the second time someone had told him that since he got here.

"I can't picture a place without music. I wouldn't mind playing something later on."

He was about to reassure them that he wouldn't use the sax's pain-giving abilities, then remembered that they probably didn't know about them in the first place.

It was odd, just relaxing with people from the other side. It might make fighting them a little more difficult, later... but Midvalley decided not to think about that right now.

In the old days maybe he wouldn't have been so soft, but in the old days he had to do what Knives and Legato told him to.

Jazz listens to them talking, taking in what is said and what implied. The way the three humans are just there is a comfortable reassurance for him.

His vocalizer clicking a soft beat, one of the old warrior poems he learned from his weapons master, he begins to build a nice fire. Some wood here, some dry grass there, a bit of rubbing ala Jeronimo and voila...

Nothing happens. He tries again. This time with a bit more force behind it. From what he learned from the human data streams, it should have already worked.

He absentmindedly listens to Midvalley say that he wouldn't mind playing some music later, when he decides to kick tradition in the aft and shoots at the not burning camping fire.

Success.

"Anybody want to fry something?" he asks the others.

Dorian agreed that a world without music was a dark one, that he couldn't imagine a place without it. Even when he was cooped up in that house in London, he heard all sorts of music from the neighbors - over a century's worth. He loved music because of how it gave him crowds in empty spaces. The mummy would love it if Midvalley played his music later.

While anything Jazz did would be attention-getting, as he was so big, Dorian didn't notice he'd moved and set up campfire until he shot at the wood to spark the fire. The mummy jumped a few good inches in the air.

"What wwwwould we fry?" He asked, still gnawing on his candy apple and glancing occasionally at Morana to make sure she was okay.

"Th-That w-would b-be r-real-ly n-nice M-Midv-valley, h-hear-ring you pl-play." the tribal girl said, smiling both in enthusiasm and politeness. She really didn't know what to expect when it came to music, or what sort of sounds the strange instrument Medvalley had brought with him would create, but she was eager to discover it for herself.

She would have said more, only to be startled by the shot, turning around to see the fire going. For a moment she pondered if Jazz had been having any difficulties with starting the blaze. Having to survive on her own for so long such a task would have been simple enough for her, but she quickly dismissed the thought to be silly. Jazz was surely more than capable, otherwise the fire wouldn't be burning before their eyes.

However, she was clearly baffled at what was to be done next with the blaze. Fire's, to her at least, were for warmth, and it was the middle of the day. And frying? Anything she had eaten would have been raw, but well, her diet on the island had consisted of fruit, nuts, plant, and the occassional fish if she was lucky. Cooked food was something she had only just been introduced to in Asgard, so the prospect of this 'frying' caused a look of utter puzzlement to cross her face.

Jazz had quite a fire going, Midvalley noticed, and he hadn't even asked about food. Barbeques were usually meat, weren't they?

But one way or the other Midvalley wasn't in charge of the cooking, so he decided to rely on one of the talents he did have. Lifting his saxophone, he embarked on a slow gentle jazz tune of his own making. Toward the end he mixed in a phrase of "Music of the Night" as a hidden message to Jazz.

"How about something sweet?" he replies to Dorian'a question. With one hand he points to the full food basket.

For himself Jazz has already a nice batch of melted gree energon crystals in mind, because their taste reminds him of apples.

Midvalley's plaing a bit of the Phantom's music. It brings a soft smile to Jazz's face.

"Take whatever you'd like," he says to all humans. "I think I've brought quite a selection of possible barbeque foods."

Dorian loved the music that Midvalley was playing. It was softer and soothing. He could dance to it, slowly, if he wanted to. But right now, the mummy licked the caramel off his apple and just listened, goofy grin on his face.

But when Jazz pointed the food basket, Dorian hobbled over there as fast as his broken body could take him. With the candy apple in his left hand, his right hand opened the lid of the basket and began perusing it. There were a lot of fresh foods he already knew in there, but there was, in the far corner, a bag of some sort. He pulled it out.

Inside the bag were heaps of cylindrical white objects. He patted his hand against the bag only to find these objects to be soft and squishy.

"P-Puff-puffs?" He questioned, holding it up to the others. "Nnnnever sssssaw these! Puff-puffs?"

Morana quietly walked behind Dorian while humming a little to herself, an appreciation for the music that Midvalley was playing. It seemed quite sad, but strong, even uplifting in places, as if someone was wanting their dream to come true. She smiled softly as she listened, wondering if she could ask the musician about the sort of sounds he was able to make, almost like magic.

Turning to Dorian, she could blink in slight confusion, tilting her head as the bag was held up in full view, though saying nothing. Instead she just looked rather puzzled. She had never seen such a thing, was it even food?

Midvalley was happy to see that these people enjoyed his music. Morana seemed like she was pretty into it, for someone who wasn't even sure if she'd heard music before. He was surpised to find himself relaxing this much, considering the company from Asgard, but if anyone could pull off a venture like this it was Jazz.

Looking over at what Dorian was holding, he stopped playing for a moment.

"Oh, hey, yeah, I used to see those around when I was a kid on Gunsmoke. Marshmallows, they're called."

For a moment he remembered his mother giving him some as a child. They hadn't had much money but she had tried to get him little treats now and then. He shook his head slightly before he continued.

"You can roast them over a fire."

He wondered if it was a good idea for a mummy to get too close to fire. Well, Dorian would know. He almost reached for a marshmallow, then hesitated. He wasn't a kid anymore.

[OOC: continued from here.]]

Jazz cannot help but smile in pride. This venture seems to become a highly pleasurable and entertaining time.

He watches as Midvalley reaches for a marshmallow and then hesitates. Why would his dear friend not want to touch the sweet stuff? His mind is not able to find an answer to this question.

Thus he asks: "Why not try some?" The question is intended for Midvalley alone, though it would be possible to understand it as one intended for all of Jazz's guests.

He presents one marshmallow to Midvalley, perfectly balanced on his finger.

When Jazz took one marshmallow to give it to Midvalley, Dorian also reached into the bag and got one for Morana. He presented it to her and smiled. He couldn't eat a puff-puff - er, marshmallow, Midvalley had called them - in this condition because of the frailty of his jaw.

So here he was, marshmallows in one hand and a caramel apple in the other, looking like a kid in a candy store. He knew this meant he'd have to change forms, and he knew just the right one who'd enjoy this. Sure, she wouldn't be him, but he would enjoy the sweets vicariously.

"Mmmmorana?" He asked, holding his treats out. "Umm, I nnnneed t-to...change b-bodies. Bring little P-Poppy out. C-C-Can you...uhm...hold thisssss for me?"

Taking the strange treat between her fingers, Morana squeezed it curiously, feeling the sugary texture against her skin. When she did press it though, it brok through the sugary exterior and into the gooey centre, amking her fingers rather sticky.

She was distracted however when Dorian asked her to hold the sweets for him. She nodded quickly, carefully holding the treats, watching as her friend prepared to change forms, still wondering what she should do with the marshmallow that was now coating her fingers in sweet stickiness.
