Greetings, Roomie!
WHO: Nix and Dorian
WHERE: Their new room
WHEN: Just after arrival to Asgard
RATING: PG
WARNINGS: None but the fact we gave an aquarium to the violinist who drowns people
SUMMARY: Dorian and Nix meet each other for the first time, as roommates and allies

When Dorian received his assigned room from Metatron, he was quick to go examine it. He'd never been good with people, and as all the others gathered around for a short while, he darted off (as fast as a man over a hundred years could dart) in absolute fascination of what he would call his new room.

And to say he liked it would be the understatement of his afterlife. Having spent nearly all his life in seclusion, he hardly got to enjoy that which he loved most. Nature had always been a great seduction to him - animals, plants, the feeling of freedom - but he'd always turned his back on this temptress. But this - this was a room with an aquarium! The colours were profoundly comforting to the point that Dorian heaved a great strangled sigh of relief upon viewing them. Quickly, he made his way to his desk (he assumed it was his desk, as the computer had no keyboard, but a microphone for him to speak into, as his hands were no good for typing). After a few moments of tinkering, he made his first journal entry, gushing about the fish. When finished, he clamored over to the aquarium itself and proceeded to poke the glass with childlike glee, completely unaware that any other person was fast approaching him.

Nix entered the room for the second time this day. He had already posted his first journal entry after many attempts and angered sighs. As he entered, the shells that were attached to the shawl around his waist clanked together, announcing his appearance into the room.

He cringed as he watched his supposed roommate tap on the glass of the aquarium.

"You know...they don't like that too much. The fish I mean. Why not...feed them or something instead. They would most likely enjoy that more..."

He seemed to blunt with his words. Very to the point as a matter of fact. Nix never really had experience talking with people, let alone someone who looked as old as any mummy in the Egyptian tombs. Stubborn to a fault, he would never apologize for his words.

Over to his bed he headed, seating himself and stretching his arms over his head. He seemed to be almost the exact opposite of his roommate, looking completely alive and quite the young heart breaker. Though, as his new roommate would find, his personality was somewhat like nails on a chalkboard.

"The name is Nix...What is yours?"

Turning slowly, finger pressed against the glass, Dorian's eyes glazed over the young man draped across the bed. This man - Nix, he'd said his name was - was attractive for his gender, but Dorian could see the tight lips and clenched jaw as red flags on a snowy path.

Admittedly, he knew so little about people. He, too, had little experience with them. But still, there'd always been that child in him: the one that wanted to make right with everyone, including those who wished to remain wrong.

He pulled his hand away from the aquarium and hobbled towards the man, holding that very hand out anxiously. "D-Dorian Copperfield..." the mummy stuttered, teeth clanging over his husky breath. "Pleassssed to meet you."

As Dorian hobbled towards him from across the room Nix stood up. He easily cleared the top of Dorian's head since he was hunched and almost looked broken.

Nix watched Dorian's hand extend to take his own and somewhat cringed but extended his own and gripped his hand firmly, but not roughly.

"Mm. Yes. A pleasure. So Dorian...Where are you from? And why so interested in the fish?"

Nix walked over to the aquarium and swirled his finger around the top to extract some of the water from the tank. It swirled about in the air in beautiful loops and spins as he began to play with it with both of his hands, manipulating it.

Dorian watched silently for a moment as this Nix fellow toyed with the water in his hands. How fluid were his motions? They were as though his very hands were ballerinas, tiny dancers balancing rain on their bodies. The mummy was quite awed.

"Gnnnn...London." He grabbed his cane from the bed and eased himself back to the tank. "I am...a housec-cat. I have never...in one hunnndred years huck been outside. Fish - new fish... I am reborn, yesss?"

It wasn't that he meant to be vague, but Dorian knew little of how to speak to others. As he never learned properly, his childlike imagine filled in the blanks of his communication skills.

He poked the glass again.

Nix raised an eyebrow as he could sense Dorian watching him. When he stood with his cane and hobbled back over to the fish tank, Nix pointed back at the tank and the water fluidly swam through the air and back into the tank with the fishes.

"A house cat, eh? You are reborn?"

Nix was a bit confused and cringed once more when Dorian began to tap on the glass of the aquarium. Nix's hand twitch in an attempt to control himself from grabbing the man's hand and telling him once more that the fish didn't appreciate his actions.

Sighing, he walked back over to his bed and sat on the edge.

"I suppose we will have to learn a lot more about one another if we wish to live in such close proximity. You are from London you said? Why a house cat as your analogy?"

Ill-contented with poking the tank any longer, Dorian sidled over to his own bed and sat, snapping bones, aching joints and all. When rested, he flipped his cane to rest against the sheets.

"Reborn in...hmmmmm..." Dorian paused before reaching into his pouch. "Loooong story...will m-make this easier..."

Pulling out a green marble, Dorian held it out for a split second, almost as if showing it off. He then placed it at the base of his neck, where it attached itself to the skin. Disappearing into his throat, the marble triggered an alteration in Dorian, and his body morphed fluidly into that of a well-dressed man, complete with top hat and handlebar mustache.

"Dear, dear, this makes conversation so much smoother, doesn't it?" The man said with a posh accent. "So indeed - yes, I am from London. A housecat, I must say, because I have been indoors all my life. And I prefer to not be associated with canines. They're so crude, those beasts!"

Nix blinked some as he watched Dorian hobble to his bed, hearing all his bones cracking, snapping, and popping. It kind of made Nix sick to listen to it.

Listening closely to him, he then watched Dorian extract a green marble and then push it into the base of his neck. All Nix could do was stare in awe.

Dorian's entire appearance had changed. He looked completely different; much younger and more sophisticated looking. With a shake of his head, he composed himself once more and nodded to his comment.

"A-ah. Y-yes. You would think, with me at least, I would enjoy dogs. But the fact remains that I like felines much more. So I agree with your distaste in canines. Now. Why have you been indoors your entire life?"

Dorian was quickly deciding he liked this Nix fellow, despite his poor state of attire. His world's dresscode must have been leniant indeed!

"Well, my good man, you've seen me. What sort of mummy would I be if I went outside every so often? Not a very good one, methinks!" Dorian shook his head, sad for only a second. "I could, if I wished, go out in this form, or four others, at my very whim. But it would be my greatest falsehood. You see, this is my original body, born over one hundred years ago. I am most fond of it!"

"Hm. Very true..But how would it be a falsehood? You are still you on the inside. Though. I suppose then it shouldn't matter what the outside looks like...I see how tough your decision is Dorian."

Nix knew that there was so much more to Dorian than met the eye. He seemed to have such a a deep and troubled past. In all honesty, Nix was wondering why he hadn't turned bad if he was forced to stay inside for so long, not knowing the wonders of wandering wherever you wanted. Most would go completely insane.

"Would you mind telling me more about you? If you like, I could return the favor.."

Dorian considered the first comment. But he didn't respond to it, as he wasn't sure how to. So he allowed Nix to finish his open thought, ending on the offer that made Dorian grin. What a nice man!

"I would love to tell you more of me!" he beamed. "I've never told anyone my story before. It might be very sad, though. Should you have a tissue box? My story is very sad. Is yours sad, too?"

Dorian was always so excited it seemed, no matter what form he took. It was refreshing that someone was always so excited to see him. He really had to admit that it was a good feeling to know someone would always be happy to see him.

Again he thought to how Dorian was so optimistic and yet was kept locked up so long. Why hadn't he gone insane? Nix was almost always alone and yet he had his aquatic friends. Though...

"Sad hm? I do not need tissues Dorian! I am not some sap...yeesh. And no. Mine is not too sad at all..."

He was so easily flustered.

Throwing his hands up in mock defense, Dorian could only giggle when Nix began to stumble over his response.

"I understand, the sea man does not cry salt tears." Dorian smiled, folding his hands over his lap. "Well, then, I suppose I should start my tale, hmm? If it becomes to long-winded, you always are in the right to stop me!"

Clearing his throat, Dorian began: "Well, many, many years ago...back in the late 1800's, I was born in London to a Dr. Harold and a Mrs. Gloria Copperfield. My mother died so many years ago...my father, his hair went wild! His eyes would gleam. His teeth sharpened. He looked...maddened. He said he knew there was a way to return her to the living. He only needed to research how.

"I...I became his research. He would kill me in the most...brutal ways known to man. I think...I do think...he didn't have to be so cruel about it, but it made him feel better. It made his anger grow elsewhere..."

Dorian had to pause for a moment as he struggled with some memories.

Nix grumbled as Dorian played on his reactions. Finally he began his story though and Nix sat back some to get into a more comfortable position.

As Dorian began his story, Nix could tell in his eyes that he was having trouble pulling on these memories. They were hard and deeply sad memories.
Perhaps he should have taken those tissues?...No. Ridiculous.

"That is awful Dorian. And yes, he shouldn't have been so cruel about killing you. Though, he shouldn't have killed you in the beginning. Please...if you wish to, continue. I will listen."

"Well, I umm..."

He murmured something even he found nearly inaudible, and continued: "Men would come to the house. They would say the neighbors heard things. But he lied with such a smile...he would say there was nothing wrong. He would show them the house, but he would hide me in closets. He always said I screamed too loudly. He did love to punch me in the face." Dorian rubbed his jaw, now covered in a light froth of hair.

"He had soon perfected the science of reviving one to life after death, but the pandemonium never ceased. He became, oh dear, addicted? I believe that is the term. My body was beyond repair. My soul was no longer the same one I started with. I thought God had abandoned me. But He did not!"

That being said, Dorian, who had previously offered the tissues, pulled one from his front pocket and blew into it.

Nix raised an eyebrow as Dorian mumbled something under his breath. But quickly lost the interest in whatever was said as Dorian continued.

Hearing his story was quite something. How could someone be so terrible to their own son. Of course, Nix had never known love or family. He was just, there. Always and forever. But he had seen those who visited his homes. The lakes, rivers, and oceans that were visited by humans constantly. He saw families and how they seemed to work. How much love was involved seemed mind boggling. So for Dorian's father to be acting in such a manner very much confused Nix.

As Dorian blew his nose, Nix spoke up.

"I have to say, I find this all somewhat disturbing Dorian. How could your father do such things to his own son? Though, I have no place to talk I suppose. I know nothing of love or family. I just always have been."

Dorian sniffed and dabbed his eyes with the same hankerchief.

"He was wrong here." The well-dressed man pointed to his cranium. And then to his heart. "So he was wrong here."

He sighed. "I was too young to understand. I just new the moon had risen in his heart. He was without a sun. Demons in his hair, demons in his hair..." He paused. "But an angel came and saved me. She took my father away, gave me my souls. I chose to exist forevermore. It was not that I was afraid to die, but I was afraid...of so many things. I knew my story had not yet ended. My fairytale, my wish come true! And here I am, doing what I knew I was meant to do."

Nix stood up as Dorian used the handkerchief and began to explain a bit more. Nix made his way over to the aquarium and led a few fish around the tank with his finger.

"I see. So you father went insane. No sun anymore. That is indeed a horrid life to lead. A life with no sun to keep you company. And yes. You now have your purpose in life and hopefully you will use your second chance wisely. I don't see how you wouldn't though Dorian. You are a great man."

Moving his hands in a fluid motion, he lifted a large sphere of water out of the tank. The sphere contained a few fish that continued to swim around in the bubble of water he created. Nix made his way back over to Dorian and sat next to him once again.

"These fish are trapped within this tank. Though, I bet there is some sort of spell on the tank that Metatron put on it or something...I'm not sure. Though these fish are still so happy, look at them. They swim freely and don't give a care. They are the ideal creatures to learn from, I believe."

With Dorian's story finished, as he refused to divulge any more of his past, he was momentarily frightened that Nix was getting up to leave. However, after he complimented the skittish mummy and had only made his way to the tank, Dorian felt himself glow.

With Nix returning to him, Dorian hung onto ever word, every point the Fosse-Grim (correct?) was trying to explain. He watched the fish swim in the floating water between his friend's hands. His eyes were wide, amazed at what his roommate could do.

The ideal creatures to learn from...

Dorian laughed and burst into tears of joy. "Such words, such words!" He wailed into his hankerchief, taking what Nix said to heart.

Nix jumped as Dorian burst into tears of joy, laughing and crying at the same time. But because of the sudden burst of laughter, Nix faltered in his concentration while holding the sphere of water and the fish fell to the floor.

"Uugh..."

Nix leaned down and waved his hands over the floor, the droplets being pulled back into a sphere of water floating above one of his hands as he began to pick up the flopping fish and chuck them back into the water.

"That was startling Dorian. I'm glad you are feeling a bit better, though I have to say I don't understand how one can cry and laugh at the same time..."

As he spoke he made his way back over to the aquarium and put the fish and water back into the large tank, letting out a sigh of relief as the semi-traumatized fish began to regain their composure within the tank.

Dorian gulped loudly through the rivers of tears staining his moustache. He couldn't believe he'd spooked Nix into spilling the fish! He was this close to assisting the Fosse-Grim, when he leaned down and used his magick to gather them up. Dorian could only begin to breathe again when Nix returned them to the tank.

"I didn't mean it! Forgive me." He would have put his hands on the man's shoulders, but he dare not be invasive. "But, do - do share with me some spot of your life. Your likes, dislikes? I am game for whatever it is you wish to share with me, old chap!"

With that, he wiped away the remaining tears, hoping to get himself cleaned off for intent of listening to Nix.

"Its fine Dorian, calm down. They are fine now."

Nix flicked his hands in the air to dry them quickly of the water. Turning around he realized how close Dorian was and he stopped in his tracks, staring down at the shorter man.

"My life? Heh. There is not much to it, trust me. I have always been alone. And the only time I was near another being of any sort, I killed them. I am a murderer. And because of the 'title' not many people visited me either. Though, I don't think I'd be inclined to visit a murderer myself."

Nix sighed and leaned up against the aquarium. As his skin touched the glass, the fish and other aquatic life within the tank, seemed to flock near him. It was quite the sight.

To say Dorian was confused was an understatement. His smile kept up, though he eased up on their proximity. Rather, his hand found interest in plucking at his handlebar moustache, twirling it in circles as he tried to comprehend what Nix explained.

"Noooo, no?" Dorian cocked his head back and forth, wishing the fish behind Nix would follow him around too, cause that would be fun. "Why would you murder people, my friend? Was it because they ate your fish?"

Nix stood there, leaning against the tank and couldn't help but raise an eyebrow at Dorian's comment about people eating his fish. Despite his change in appearance he acted quite the same. He seemed like such a naive child, which was not a bad thing, but could get him into trouble later. Nix decided to keep an eye on him from that point on.

"N-no. No Dorian. The fish can fend for themselves. It is not my job to protect them and they know that, though they would love for me to do so. Little moochers..."

He turned slightly, placed his finger to the tank, and then stopped leaning against the glass and stood up straight.

"I did not do it on purpose, mind you. It is just...the way I am. I love to play the violin. But, my music does things to people. And while I play, I do not completely realize what is going on. When I finish, I find...well...."

Nix's eyes would not leave the floor now as he thought to all the instances where he finished playing his lovely music only to find dead, floating bodies in his pristine waters.

For the longest moment there was silence. Silence because Dorian simply could not understand what Nix was referring to. He was too ignorant, too sheltered, to truly understand anything of this sort of memory unless Nix said it outright. It was ironic, really, because more often than not, Dorian was the one speaking in slant.

The sad look in his eyes, though, brought the puzzle pieces together with a hard and final clack. The mummy-turned-aristocrat feared another tearfest within himself, but squeezed his hands tightly to his chest. He wanted to give Nix a hug, but knew better.

"At least...they died with music in their hearts." There. The worst response on the planet, and Dorian could say it because he knew not what else to say. "You...you provided them beauty. It was not a complete eclipse."

Nix chuckled lightly at Dorian's response and straightened himself once again. Clearing his throat, he shook it off and collected himself once more.

"I suppose that is a good way to look at it Dorian. Thank you. But, that is the extent of my life. There really is not much more to it..."

He looked Dorian straight in the eye, finally, and gave him a sincere smile. It was really the only thanks he could give him since he was a little too stubborn to out right say 'sorry'.

[AN: Ace icon, girl!]

It seemed so final, Nix's last words. He would not divulge anymore about his past and neither would Dorian himself. Nothing more to it? Oh, he was sure there was much, much more. But that would be saved for different times.

He smiled in return to Nix's own lip-raising. It seemed to quell whatever tension remained in the room. "I must say, I have enjoyed our conversation immensely. We shall be great roommates, I can tell!"
