WHO: Shinji and Sal
WHERE: Outside Niflheim
WHEN: After this
RATING: TBD
WARNINGS: None, yet.
SUMMARY: Sal offered to teach Shinji how to (effectively) use a gun.

Shinji had been surprised when Sal had offered to teach Shinji to use a gun (well, he wasn't entirely sure whether the word 'offered' should be used, but it fit). Neither was he quite sure about what he thought of being taught to more effectively use a gun. Explosives, he was fine with - building and using, but guns? Guns made him think of Iijima, of Keita, and of his own death. And, of course, pain. But mostly, he thought of Iijima, and the way that he hadn't hit what he had been aiming for. He'd been tired, panicking, and pointing a gun at a friend. He still didn't understand why Iijima hadn't just listened to him. So many things had gone wrong that night, and it had all started simply because--

Shaking his head, Shinji sat outside Niflheim. It wasn't the most pleasant place to be sitting, nor did it have the nicest view, but since Sal had said to meet him outside, that was where he had come (but then, it would have been rather stupid to attempt to practice shooting inside). As far as he was concerned, as long as he didn't dwell on things that could now not be changed, perhaps the experience wouldn't be too bad. Just, he supposed, as long as he wasn't given a Beretta to practice with. That would just be taking the piss, and Shinji would not be in the least bit impressed. He, did, though, get the feeling that practice against a non-moving target, and one which, at that, wasn't living, would make the whole thing slightly easier. And, of course, it wouldn't be pleading with him not to shoot, to trust him. He didn't get it. If Iijima had survived for that long, he would have been able to survive for longer, surely? Why did he have to be so damn curious about the light and find out who it was. It could have been anyone!

Still, regardless, it had proved that curiosity did, in fact, kill the cat.

Whilst lost in his thoughts, he hadn't heard the fact that someone else had come outside.

Sal had gathered a good handful of weaponry - mostly guns, some LAWs and even one or two knives. Anything that could be used as some form of projectile was a valuable asset in fighting. It wasn't that Sal was a poor fighter - he was pretty decent once he got going - but there was something pleasurable watching someone die by the weapon in your hand. It was a feeling of power. And Sal didn't think Shinji appreciated it well enough.

So there he was, saddling up and heading outside to find the boy. If Mitch hadn't been such a distracting target, Sal knew he would have definitely focused much more on Shinji. Sure, Shinji wasn't gifted with supernatural powers, but he was strong in his own right.

He cracked open the front door, finding Shinji sitting already on the front porch. He chuckled.

"I never give you enough credit."

Shinji started slightly at the laugh and the subsequent words, before turning, brown eyes settling on Sal. His lips quirked in a slight smile at the comment. "What, you expected me to sit in a corner of my room because someone mentioned guns?" He asked, his amusement reflected in his voice. His attention soon fell on the variety of weapons, and his expression flickered slightly. "You know..." He started slowly, raising his gaze to meet Sal's. "I am just one person. I might be quite wonderful, but... I think you're actually managing to overestimate me there, slightly", he finished.

Standing up, he brushed at his trousers before shoving a hand in one of his pockets and pressing his lips into a line, staring at Sal somewhat expectantly. He wasn't entirely sure of what to say, and he had to admit, against all pretences, he did feel a little nervous about shooting a gun again. The thought that he wasn't actually going to be firing at anyone, let alone pointing it at anyone he liked, was only slightly comforting. "So, like, where did you plan on doing this?" He asked, after a pause.

"No." Sal said point-blank. "I expected you to avoid me at all costs since our little conversation back in Emptiness, seeing as how I rub you the wrong way and all. But, no, no this is good. This is very good."

The leather-clad being walked out into the lawn, several of the weapons in his hands, and many others tucked over his body - in holsters, over shoulders. He laughed at Shinji's observation, nodding at the boy as if to indicate he follow him. The asexual human planned on taking them to a little target range he built in Emptiness itself. It wouldn't be as though the residents would mind.

"I'm bringing all of these weapons to find what fits you best. Your style, your comfort zone. It's not as simple as you think it would be. 'Sides, some of these are for me. Stress management, yaknow?"

Shinji shrugged. He remembered the conversation, but it didn''t overly bother him. Not to mention, he got the feeling he irritated Sal as much Sal irritated him, at times. "It happens. Besides, really, you've gotta be stupid not to admit the skills that others have that you don't. Jealousy is an ugly trait and never serves well. Besides", he added, a little brighter. "You're honest, and you're not condescending about it like some people here. Nor do you start going on about how people should be doing things and then acting secretive", he added, sounded slightly irritated. If Strix had simply done one or the other, he wouldn't have been bothered, but he did find it hypocritical of her.

At Sal's response with regards to the number of weapons. It definitely made sense, and he was quite impressed at the other's thoroughness. He hesitated slightly before speaking again. He didn't really know the slightest thing about weapons. "I... Don't know if it'll make any difference. I'm kinda clueless about weapons, but I'm left-handed". He did, however, laugh a little at the aside Sal added. It didn't surprise him, he had to admit, though.

Shinji's observations, Sal noted, were not directly about either of them. There was an aloof note in his voice, especially in those last lines, that keyed Sal into realizing Shinji was rather vexed by someone(s) in the house. Other than that, though, everything he said made perfect sense to the asexual gun-toter. He himself was a bit of a braggart, but only when he knew it'd get a deliberate rise out of someone. It was all fun and games, really: fun and games in association with plotting, backstabbing, and turncoats. Good times.

"I can't help being honest." Sal shrugged as he made his way through the forest, Shinji close by him. "I was never much for subtelty. And neither are you, I've noticed. Which is never a bad thing. I appreciate it, really. Heh, I'm too low on the foodchain to be jealous anyway. Even I know that." He wondered who it was that had been rubbing Shinji the wrong way.

As for the young man's last comments, Sal shrugged. "There isn't that much of a difference between left-handed and right-handed weaponry, so don't worry, sweetheart. And, yeah, you're not gonna get a better teacher than me. Trust me, I suck at a lot of shit. This isn't one of them. C'mon, we're almost there."

"Subtlety is a good thing only if there's a reason to be subtle, and if you're going to get a result out of it that you wouldn't get by not beating about the bush. Here? There's no reason to be subtle, nor is there much reason to hide a great deal. What will be found out, will be found out. Besides, everyone know who is on which side, and since the body switch, everyone has a clearer idea of what those on the other side are capable of", he elaborated, watching where he was stepping as they walked. They seemed to be heading towards Emptiness, if his memory served him correctly. "The self-appointed food chain is kind of irritating", he commented, not particularly bothered if Sal was paying much attention to his words. He could have continued, but he was fully aware that was a fine line between merely commenting and launching into full-fledged complaints.

Shinji laughed. "That so? Well, I appreciate the fact that you're bothering with me", he responded honestly. And he was a little pleased to know that there was little in the way of left and right-handed weaponry. It certainly made things for him easier. The petname, though? That was novel, and he couldn't really think of a response to it, and he couldn't help but think that even if he could, the 'moment' for replying to it had passed.

Sal shrugged, moving several shorter branches out of his way. "Sometimes honesty is more potent than subtelty. Victims, when faced with the blunt truths of their demise, they...their faces really are pretty." He paused as several memories strung themselves across his inner eye. "Being subtle here isn't being anything but being difficult."

He could see several of the taller buildings in the distance and it sparked the excitement in him. Sal hopped over a log.

"So hard on yourself." He mused out loud, looking back every now and again at the teenager by him. It wouldn't have been the truth if he thought Shinji reminded him of himself when he was younger. But there were a lot of similarities. It both disgusted and impressed him. "So fucking hard on yourself. You sound like me sometimes. But trust me, once you get the hang of it, it won't be so difficult. Good for defenses."

Shinji's expression flickered at Sal's comment about victims, reminding him that no matter what happened, he really would never be able to understand the other. He briefly wondered whether Kiriyama had thought the same each time he killed someone. Kiriyama had seemed colder though, far more emotionless. Sal did have emotions, ever if he (presumably) hid a lot of them. A slight, amused smirk crossed his lips. Maybe Sal was more like the psycho-bitch Mitsuko. Mitsuko would have hated the comparison, of course, and he imagined Sal would have done the same if he were to air the view and Sal knew who Mitsuko was. But he had a vague feeling that Sal might have liked Mitsuko, at least a little - hell, she was psycho.

"Huh?" Shinji responded, completely lacking in eloquence. He wasn't sure if he had missed something in the conversation entirely (he liked to think he hadn't), or Sal was just reading into things a lot. He didn't quite understand what had been said for Sal to come to the conclusion that he was hard on himself. He certainly didn't think he was. After a moment, it clicked, and he chuckled slightly. "Oh, right. Well, actually, it was more to do with the fact that you originally struck me as someone who'd be a firm believer in the 'each man for himself' thing", he elaborated before nodding at the comment about it being 'not so difficult and good for defences'. "Right, ok. So, Emptiness, huh", he added, glancing up at the approaching buildings.

Sal chuckled. "Don't get me wrong - I am. But this doesn't make us buddies or anything. I just hate knowing we got people around here who couldn't defend themselves if something happened." That was the finite truth of it all. Sal didn't care about the interests, the pasts, or the likes or dislikes of the others. He cared that they fought, that they, at the very least, attempted to do something active around Niflheim, even if they had no interest in victimizing those in Asgard.

For some reason, Shinji's presence always made Sal go into deep thoughts. It was like his contemplative nature was rubbing off on him.

Finally, the last of the trees parted to reveal some two-story townhouses. Sal nodded his head to again instruct Shinji to follow. He wanted to find a good street.

"Yeah, Emptiness." Sal finally responded. "Provides accurate targets. Better than a forest - shoot at the trunk, shoot at the trunk! You'd never learn anything that way."

Shinji wanted to say that he could defend himself, but it wasn't exactly true, was it? If he'd been able to defend himself, he'd have lived for a little longer, perhaps long enough to set his plan into action. As it was, though, Kiriyama had been better at it than he had been, combined with the fact that his aim had been poor. Brilliant combination. It was frustrating to think that despite everything, he hadn't been good at that aspect of the 'game'. "What do you mean this doesn't make us buddies? I was totally getting ready to write your name at the top of my list for birthday party invitations", Shinji replied flatly, casting Sal a sidelong glance. He hadn't expected that they would be friends, and he certainly wouldn't have considered Sal one. That said, he didn't particularly dislike him. There were certainly worse people to know.

Following Sal down a street, Shinji glanced curiously at the buildings they passed. He still didn't get the place, or feel all that comfortable in it. The idea of a fully functioning town being empty for apparently no reason what-so-ever unnerved him (as well as slightly irritated him - mostly because he didn't know the reason for it). "'More accurate targets'?" He repeated. "What am I going to be shooting at?"

The pair came to one of the main streets of the town, wind whistling through the cracks between the buildings. Sal almost expected to see tumbleweed hopping along down the road itself and hear the forlorn cry of a hungry hawk. But it was mostly quiet, still, like it was frozen in time. It didn't bother him.

"You won't be shooting at anything special; mostly just commonplace things. There'll be a wide range of targets, from large to narrow in scope, moving...all sorts. Not all in one day. The basics'll be fine for now."

Most people wouldn't consider shooting at signs, at windows, at lamps, or anything, but they could serve a damn good purpose and Sal planned to use them for it. It was like how a photographer saw the world - everything was a picture. For Sal, everything was a target.

He brought Shinji over in front of one of the stores where large, white paint read, "Sam's Laundromat." The o in the second word would work perfectly as a starting point, so he counted steps, measuring the distance out to the road. When he got there, he grabbed Shinji's shoulder and nudged him back five feet.

"We're twenty yards back." Sal explained, putting the few weapons in his hands on the ground lovingly beside them. "Look at the o. You comfortable with that?"

As Sal brought them to a stop, Shinji couldn't say he'd ever thought that he'd be practising shooting in an abandoned town. He wondered, if his Uncle would ever have thought teaching him how to shoot was necessary, how he would have gone about it. Not, of course, that obtaining weaponry or having somewhere to appropriately teach someone would have been easy to come across.

"Basics, huh? Sounds good to me, as long as we're not starting with 'remember to take the safety off before trying to shoot', because, really, I like to think I'm not lacking in common sense", he responded, a grin flashing across his features. He knew the very basics, at least. He was also aware of the principles of shooting, it was simply putting it into practice.

Shinji glanced at the weapons with brief curiosity and interest, before looking up at the sign and thinking about the distance. If it'd been basketball, he'd have simply laughed and said 'no prob'. As it was, he was certain he could hit the sign, but he wasn't certain that he'd be able to hit the 'o'. He'd like to think he'd be able to, but... After a pause, he nodded. "Well, if I don't try, I won't know". He looked back down at the weapons before looking up at Sal. "Any particular one first?"

Sal chuckled at the safety comment. If they had to start there, the asexual being would have just grabbed his shit and left. From the conversation the two of them had before, Sal was quite sure Shinji knew much more than he let on. Some things about his past, certainly, but he didn't know for sure. He rummaged around in his mind for a second, reflecting back on what Shinji said about Japan's government, but nothing definite came to mind. It would later.

Pulling out a semi-automatic pistol, Sal bit back a hiss of pain. The fingers of his left hand, one could see should they look closely enough, had healed incorrectly. After falling off the roof with Mitch, he'd never gotten them examined. Of course, he wouldn't have, even if Dr. Cox had begged him. Which he didn't.

"Try this one." Sal held out the 38AP pistol. "It's gotta bit of a kick to it." Then he said: "Don't just fire it, I need to set you up."

Shinji took the gun, turning it over in his hands as he studied it. Weapons had never interested him a great deal, and he doubted he'd be able to tell many apart. It wasn't a skill nor interest he'd ever had the time nor want to develop. Not to mention, the consequences of being found with such an item without just cause resulted unanimously in death. It wasn't a risk many people were willing to take - he doubted that there were many revolutionaries who succeeded in getting their hands on decent weapons. The government had always been particularly skilled in controlling what came in and out of the country.

When Sal mentioned it had a 'bit of a kick to it', Shinji wondered how it would match up to the Beretta he'd fired during the Programme. He couldn't say he remembered with great detail what the recoil had been like on it, though. He'd been too distracted with other issues. "Set me up, huh. Well, go ahead", he commented, right arm hanging loosely by his side whilst his let hand gripped the pistol, holding it a little in front of him until Sal deemed him ready.

"Okay, now, I'm not feeling you up." Sal threw in a disclaimer, as generally people were put off by him being near them. Touching them was a whole other matter. "But there's a way to stand and hold the gun for the most stability and accuracy. It doesn't matter so much later on, but when you're learning, it's a big deal."

So Sal took Shinji and squared off his shoulders, situated his foot positions, and repositioned the gun in the boy's hands. He stepped to the side so that it wasn't pointing at him as he moved the boy's hands. "One on the bottom. Left hand here, thumb should be like this..." Sal pinched Shinji's thumb lightly. "Leave it there. You keep one hand on the bottom, cup it like this. People don't really like it there; they want both hands on the grip, but that's not gonna do anything for your aim."

Shinji tensed slightly as Sal began to move him; he would have reacted the same had anyone touched him, before relaxing slightly, allowing Sal to reposition him as he saw fit. Accuracy. That was what this came down to, really, wasn't it? Shinji wouldn't have said anything about being poor with guns if he had had better aim. But then, if he'd had better aim, so many events would have changed, and he might not even have died, he might not even have been here. Of course, those were a lot of 'mights' and 'what if's', and it was never good to consider them, because they would never come to pass.

"Right", Shinji responded, glanced down and taking note of the way Sal had told him to hold the gun. It wasn't particularly comfortable, and he did feel as if he wanted to move his hands so he was holding the gun more comfortably, but Sal clearly knew better, so Shinji kept them as they were. He looked back up at the lettering, before glancing back across at Sal, attempting to ignore the slightly strange feeling in his stomach; he wasn't shooting at anyone, let alone someone that thought of him as a friend. It would be fine. "So, uh, I can shoot now?" He asked.

{AN: Yeah, my last post was kinda vague. I used to know how to shoot a gun, so I know the basics, but I need to relearn the terminology >.>}

"Sure you can shoot now." Sal rolled his eyes, taking his hands off the younger man's arms, positioning the gun with one hand and angling Shinji's head with the other. "You see these little brackets here on top of the gun? This is your sight. You align them to focus on your target. It's not one-hundred percent accurate - there's always a slight curve, but you'll learn."

This time, Sal backed off without any more intent of setting Shinji up. The boy's positioning was taut, almost perfect. It didn't matter now. These things he'd learn on his own.

"Fire when ready, honeylamb."

((ooc: It's fine! You're talking to a Brit who's never so much as touched a working gun! Even Shinji would have more knowledge than I do xD So, in other words, completely winging it, here))

Shinji murmured a vague response to show he listened, although he did think that telling him what the sight was was a little redundant, but whatever. He hadn't known that there was a slight curve. Whatever the case, he wouldn't know how to compensate for it until he knew what that 'slight curve' entailed.

Lining his sight up with where he intended to shoot, Shinji wondered idly how many of Asgard knew how to use a gun. As he pulled the trigger, Shinji let out a breath he hadn't entirely been aware he'd been holding, and stared up at the lettering. Whilst he'd been expecting the recoil, he hadn't been entirely prepared for it, per se, but he figured it was something he'd get used to given enough time and practice. He was also able to see why there were people who were tempted to hold guns with both hands. He couldn't remember how he'd held the Beretta when he'd fired it.

His shot, however, whilst not awful, had gone slightly wide, and he screwed his nose up, frowning in irritation at it. He tended to expect the best from himself, and whilst logic told him that one would only get better with practice, it always irritated him when he wasn't as good as he felt he should be.

{AN: Sounds like we're snazzy, then! XD}

The bullet had struck the glass about three centimeters away from the rim of the O, which wasn't bad for a first shot. Sal admired the sound of the crackling glass, but knew it wouldn't hold up for long. Shinji would be able to get in probably two or three more shots before the window there would completely break and collapse. So as Shinji surveyed the result of his first shot, Sal gazed around, looking for something - a sign, something sturdier than glass. Then he wondered if he could just go into a store, grab a can of spraypaint, and make her own targets.

Being in a abandoned town had a weird affect on how she considered things. Simply waltzing into a store and grabbing one of those cans? Not normally an option.

He turned his attention back to the younger man. "Not bad. Now that you know where it goes, angle your sight differently. If the curve veers left, focus your sights more to the right."

Having someone other than his uncle teach him matters such as this was certainly strange, Shinji decided as Sal spoke again. That said, though, Shinji wouldn't have said Sal was a bad teacher; he was straight and to the point, and that was all that was needed really.

Once again taking aim at the 'o', Shinji attempted to correct his sight and fired again. It appeared he had overcompensated. He muttered something vaguely irritated under his breath as he took stock of the shot. It appeared this was going to be harder than he had imagined - at least, becoming decent would be harder than he imagined.

He glanced at Sal out of the corner of his eyes. "When did you start using guns?" He asked curiously.

Sal noted the overcompensation, but didn't twitch too badly over it, as he knew it was going to happen. He gazed sidelong at the two holes in the O, inwardly chuckling at how they looked like a pair of eyes. Still, the glass appeared ready to collapse in on itself at any moment.

"When I was a couple years younger than you." Sal finally responded, shifting his grey eyes over to Shinji. He could have gone into detail, but since Shinji didn't ask for anything more than a when, he didn't digress. He did, however, find it curious that Shinji took a slight interest in his past - not that it was raising any red flags.

"You wanna take one more shot at that before we go to the local warehouse? I need to get some spraypaint to make you better targets."

"Un", Shiniji murmured, focusing on the 'o' again. It ws a better shot than his two previous, but it still wasn't perfect. His eyes widened as the glass shattered, despite the fact that it was obvious the glass wasn't going to hold up for long.

"'The local warehouse'?" Shinji repeated, amusement creeping into his voice. "You're making Emptiness sound so homely. You'll be saying we should stop off at the grocers and butchers next for some food to make dinner with". Regardless, he was silently impressed with how seriously Sal seemed to be taking this whole thing. It wasn't a reaction Shinji had entirely expected.

"What can I say?" Sal shrugged lazily. "Feels like home! But, eh, I wouldn't go to the grocery stores. They've been abandoned for how long?"

Anyway, that was small talk, and Sal wasn't particularly gifted in that department. So he took the gun from Shinji's hand, as he didn't really want the boy walking around with a loaded gun for anybody's safety.

"C'mon, nobody's gonna take these. I know where the warehouse is. Hop to it, beautiful." And he walked off down the road.

Shinji scoffed briefly, before shooting Sal a a sidelong glance as he took the gun from his grasp but said nothing. It showed Sal was cautious, but Shinji couldn't help but feel a little miffed at the thought that Sal apparently thought there was a chance that Shinji would end up firing off a round as they walked.

Regardless, he followed Sal silently. Shinji had personally only ever explored a relatively small part of Emptiness, and he couldn't say he'd ever gone to any warehouses.

After about ten minutes of walking, Sal and Shinji found the warehouse that Sal had mentioned. A lot of its windows had been broken, walls with vines creeping across them - in fact, it look a bit more decayed than the rest of the town.

Sal pushed open the door, allowed Shinji in first (Sal was a gentleman....somehow), and led them down one of the aisles. The asexual being picked up some of the cans.

"I'm seeing pink. Big pink targets. Emasculating." Sal frowned, thinking it wasn't worth the jokes. For once, she was rather serious. The can was tossed over her shoulder. "Red. I'm seeing red."

Shinji's expression flickered slightly, and he pulled a face as they came up to the warehouse. The general state of it (with the exception of the vines) reminded him of the warehouse he and Yutaka had set up camp in on the island.

Stepping through the opened door, Shinji shot Sal an expression of surprise and murmured his thanks before following Sal down on of the aisles.

"Red? Easy to see from afar, or something, right?" Shinji was sure his uncle might have said something along the lines of colours once, but he couldn't say he remembered now. Either way, there must be a reason why targets tended to be white and red. Shinji guessed they simply stood out against the more bland colouring of most natural items.

"Yep." Sal answered Shinji's question, grabbing two cans and nodding that the younger man should follow. The killer made a joke of paying by walking through one of the aisles and toying with one of the scanners before leaving.

Once the two were outside, Sal found several items at which Shinji could practice, drawing various sizes of circles on them - some were signs, others random objects. Either way, a whole range was assemblied.

"Here's Penelope." Sal handed the gun back to Shinji. "She's yours if ya promise to take good care of her."

{AN: I know time flew by D: Wanna start wrapping the thread up~?}

Shinji followed Sal outside, his mood more melancholy than he'd expected although he understood why to a certain extent, and he imagined he'd get over it once he'd slept, or something).

Nevertheless, he watched Sal curiously as he methodically set up targets. As Sal handed him the gun, however, Shinji looked up at him in surprise. The fact that Sal was giving him a gun overrode his surprise at the fact that Sal had named the weapon, and as such, he didn't comment on the matter.

"Uh, thanks", he murmured.

((ooc: Sounds good! Otherwise this could go on for a while. Also, sorrow for the slow posting D:))
