Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Current mood: determined
Entry tags:carrion, finished thread, glitch, rating: pg-13, setting: emptiness, setting: niflheim, setting: the tower within niflheim

Who: Carrion, Glitch [possibly open?]
Where: Asgard, and then somewhere in Emptiness, and then Niflheim
When: some hours after Una's visit to Asgard
Rating: PG-13 for safety
Warnings: None at the moment
Summary: When Carrion makes a quick trip to make a special delivery, he comes across a resident of Asgard. Curiosity piqued, Carrion decides a little chat might be interesting. Will Glitch get into trouble with the Prince of Midnight?

After walking through Emptiness and the woods, Christopher Carrion stepped out onto Asgard's fields at last. A glance up at the mansion made him hesitate, as he searched for onlookers and passersby. So far, there was no one - not even the hint of a face staring out from a window. Untold humiliation would come to him if anyone saw this Niflheimer acting so furtively, like a teenager out after curfew. Of course that was ridiculous, since he was the most comfortable out in the evening (he owned the deepest part of the night). However, he still did not want a soul to see him around Asgard.

In his hands, held close to his chest, was a small package. Within the brown-wrapping paper was a gold-plated music box, elegantly carved with images of horses and flowers. He did not recognize the tune it played, but he found it beautiful and whimsical, much like the person who was going to receive it.

While still in denial over his feelings regarding Alice Elliot, he could not deny that he wanted to better understand her. To do that, he had to be able to watch her, observe her. Therefore, hidden inside the music box, was a spying device. It was the prize he received from Lucifer for gaining Light's painful promise. How the Devil's Servant had anticipated Carrion's needs was a mystery, and Carrion wished it to remain so. Obviously Lucifer wanted to encourage the Prince in his infatuation interest in the kind-hearted Asgardian.

Or at least, he wanted to encourage spying in general. It didn't matter, as long as the others didn't know Carrion's true intentions.

At first he could not decide where to leave the package. At the very boundaries of Asgard? In the garden maze? No, it had to be at the entrance. He climbed the steps, careful to not trip over his long silver robes, and placed the present beside the door. Then he checked to make sure that his note was clearly visible: To Alice Elliot, from Christopher - I hope you enjoy this sincere token of friendship.

That sentence made him wince and it agitated the nightmare eels behind his collar. 'Is that too much? Is it too assuming?' He forced himself to walk back down the steps before he tried more drastic measures.

Into the woods, he quickly returned. But unfortunately for him, he would not go entirely undetected.

Glitch hadn't really been paying all that much attention to where we was going, just really wandering since he honestly kept loosing his way thanks to his very forgetful nature. He honestly didn't know how he had come to arrive in a very quaint looking town (be it rather devoid of life), but he was there all the same.

If he had known anything about this place, he would have realized that no matter where he looked, there wasn't a soul to be found. But as always, his memory didn't last long enough for him to keep the thoughts contained and he was re-entering place after place, finding not even a shop clerk which to ask.

Stopping in front of a rather large glass bay window, he quizzically pondered the small toy town that he spied in the window. There were little lights twinkling in the toy buildings, and the town diorama even included little strange figures of all types that looked to be more than just toys; as if someone took the time and care to craft things just so.

Instead of skirting Emptiness like usual, Carrion decided to go through the so aptly named town. It wasn't quite like any place he had seen in his world, the Abarat, and yet the sights were familiar, from his short time spent in the world a part from the Abarat, the world called the Hereafter. Street lamps were beginning to turn on, although certainly there were no inhabitants who needed them. It was all very strange, but did not disturb Carrion at all.

There were scarier things than empty cities, and the Nightmare Man knew them all.

But it still managed to surprise him when down these very streets, a man was standing next to a toystore window. If Carrion had eyebrows, they would have been furrowed. That clothing, that stance, that metal zipper...

He didn't remember much at all of the day he spent inside that body, but he knew the name, after a bit of light research through the communication devices.

He walked up next to the window, curiosity piqued despite himself. "Mister Glitch."

Glitch had been so engrossed in the small toy town that he hadn't even noticed someone had come up next to him until they spoke. It was just the voice that caused Glitch to jump, startled and his nose hitting the glass with a thud with as close as he had been to the window itself.

Hand over his noise, Glitch stood up and looked to where the voice had come from, finding the most peculiar looking being he had encountered. They looked like a papes, only standing upon two legs instead of four; well, they did and they didn't at the same time. Papes didn't wear clothing for one, that much he remembered, and he highly doubted they would be decked in chains and a strange glass tank around part of their face.

"I, uh, do I know you?" he said behind his hand, hoping that his nose wasn't bleeding.

"Not at all," Carrion assured the poor man, taking a mild satisfaction at startling Glitch. His very name, Christopher Carrion, had once struck terror into the hearts of mortals. Not so much in this realm. Nowadays, he was lucky if someone flinched at his appearance.

The lack of humble deference did sting at times.

"I know of you, however," he continued. "You're rather... special."

Special in the interest of Carrion's twisted scientific inquiry, that is.

Glitch still held his poor nose, which was currently stinging from the rather close encounter with the shop window. "Special? I rather doubt that one. Maybe once, but not now... not anymore anyway" he shook his head as just looked disbelieving of the stranger in front of him. Whom ever this was, Glitch didn't really know. He got a slight discomforting feeling from the person standing before him, but he didn't know really why, so there wasn't much he could do beyond keep an eye on them in the hopes they weren't going to do anything.

"So if you know of me, who might you be?" he inquired behind his hand, half worried they were going to say something about papes or something else to that effect. Oh, he honestly hoped this stranger wasn't with the Long Coats, he would have been in trouble if that was the case.

"I'm Christopher." He refrained from adding his last name, since it wouldn't help with his already "bothersome" appearance. Though he could have created a human-looking, innocent disguise, he prefered for people to know exactly what he looked like: scarred, rough, and most importantly, intimidating.

"Not anymore? Would that have to do with your missing... brain?" He pointed toward Glitch's head. There were many fantastic creatures in his homeworld that seemed to work against the laws of nature and physics... but as far as he knew, they all had at least some form of a brain.

He thought for a moment before speaking, his hand being pulled away from his nose and exclaiming "Hey I think I know that name! But, I couldn't tell you from where... I do know it though." Glitch bit the corner of his bottom lip and tried to force his empty mind to give him the where since he did recognize it.

It dawned on him that Christopher was actually pointing at his head "Oh that... um yeah, I guess you could say that. Big empty hole up there now, but at least the zipper keeps things from getting in... well I think it does anyway." Glitch actually looked upwards and a hand involuntarily reached up to make sure the zipper tab was still in the closed position in the back of his head.

Carrion nodded. "We did speak once... during a rather confusing day. My memory was affected, but I believe I told you my name."

He was slightly disappointed to see Glitch so protective of that zipper, since he was terribly curious to see what lay inside. Of course the brainless man had just told him, but the Prince was always one for hands-on experiences. "Do you know how that empty hole came to be, if you don't mind my asking?"

He wasn't really apologetic and he had no problems with prying (unless someone else was doing it). This type of interrogation was a much less painful method compared with what he did to Light.

Patting the back of his head now that he knew the zipper was indeed closed, Glitch turned his attention back to Christopher "I may be brainless, but I already know that much. It was taken because of what I knew, not that I can honestly remember what that was. And even if I knew where it was, I don't know if it could be put back into place once it is taken out."

Glitch gave a half-shrug as his attention went back to the window, looking at his own lamp-lit reflection in the glass. He doubted what he saw now was anything like he might have looked before his brain was removed, but he really didn't have anything to compare what he saw to what he knew. It was with this thought that his expression went blank for a fraction of a moment, before he blinked a few times and a slightly confused look graced his features.

It took him a few more moments to notice someone else in that very same reflection, to which he turned and brightly exclaimed with a smile and slight tilt to his head "You look familiar, do I know you from somewhere?"

It took a few moments before it registered with him exactly what Christopher had said. "Over a hundred!?" Glitch tripped over the last few stairs and went sprawling face first onto the landing. He hadn't even been paying attention to the mention of the flying machine, more interested in the fact that his face was throbbing.

Bemused, Carrion leaned down and pulled Glitch up by the collar of his tattered coat, helping him back to his feet. Glitch weighed about as much as a bag of potatos to the Prince (though likely less, due to a key potato missing). "Probably closer to ninety, but I've long stopped counting my birthdays. I've never truly celebrated any of them anyway."

Not with cakes, balloons, or pin-the-tail-on-the-donkey's that is.

"Are you all right?"

Glitch had a hand over his face, rubbing his nose while talking behind it "I think so, but my nose smarts like anything. Thank you by the way...."

It hadn't been the steps that had really been the issue, it had been the sudden talk of age that caught him off guard and sent him sprawling forward. "But that is quiet an age to achieve at any rate. I wish I could honestly tell you how old I am, but sadly I can't even remember that much." Glitch spoke in a muffled tone thanks to his hand. He wasn't even quite sure if his nose was bleeding with the way it stung.

After making sure that Glitch hadn't broken his nose, Carrion continued up to the door of the tower. "I suppose it is a rather ripe age, but I've only lived this long because I am determined to achieve a certain goal in my life. I refuse to die until it comes to pass."

He knew he could still die, but he was doing his best to keep himself alive.

Up at the door, Carrion lifted a hand. Though normal human eyes couldn't see it, the Prince had placed several, magical defensive spells all over the Tower. They protected his room from most things like breaking and entering, scying, spying devices, etc. When he pushed open the door, the spell disengaged as it recognized its master.

"Here it is, home sweet home," Carrion chuckled. "You'll be safe here."

Ripe old age wasn't the half of it, it was quite a frightening age to achieve because Glitch wasn't even sure if people could live that long. Sure, people lived a long time, but he didn't know if they could live to be a century or older; but then again, there were stranger things in the world.

"Well goals are something good to have, and I'm sure if that helps you to continue living, it must be a very wonderful goal to have." Glitch spoke as he followed Christopher into the room. He was completely unaware of the magical wards that were placed on the room, and simply began looking around taking in whatever sights it beheld.

It wasn't until he was somewhere in the center of the room that Glitch's face went blank for a fraction of a second, and he was left blinking and looking around with a slightly confused look on his face.

Lucky for Glitch, they were going to stay in the first level of the Tower, which did not bear walls of living, moving flesh. Unfortunately for Glitch, they were in the laboratory portion. Lights flickered on as they stepped inside, but they did not illuminate a particularly comforting sight.

Flasks of all sorts and filled with strange liquids lined the tables. A machine produced varying amounts of electricity, shocking a severed arm, making the fingers twitch. There were tools of science, and tools of torture, arranged in an organization only apparent to the only resident of this room.

This was where Carrion intended to do some hands-on research.

As soon as confusion passed Glitch's face, Carrion gestured toward the two, six-foot-tall stitchlings hiding in the shadows, who promptly went to grab the soon-to-be-newest experiment.

As soon as the lights flickered on, Glitch finally got a good look at where he was, and it didn't seem at all like the place he wanted to be. The scene he was looking at brought back feelings he didn't have any memories to cover, but the feelings were strong enough to make him back peddle right into a wall.

When he saw two of what looked to be various things out together (what those were, Glitch didn't know where to start) coming right for him, he was fully prepared to defend himself without even thinking about it, to which he took a protective stance* in order to do so. They were slightly taller than him, and quite a bit larger, but hopefully they would go down quickly and he could run as fast as his legs could carry him.

Meanwhile, Carrion locked the door and leaned against it, as if he were merely a spectator watching a show.

The stitchlings were aptly named - their skins were like patchwork quits, pieces sewn together from various bodies. Their faces were contorted and monstrous, eyes mismatched in shape and size, and their smell was of decomposition and mud.

His grandmother did a better job, but he was quietly learning what made them stronger. Though taller, they were both about the strength of average humans still.

The creatures flanked both sides of Glitch. At first they hesitated upon seeing his stance, but then they moved, suspecting no threat.

[Hah! XD Feel free to beat up on them a little, they're not very stable yet.]

Glitch spoke while pulling the zipper closed "Well hopefully you've done some good with it. The only thing that comes to mind that I can recall is inventing, just not quite sure what however."

"So you said my friend's were seeking out my mind? I wouldn't have thought DG and them would have left without me..." Glitch bit the edge of his lip and looked off to the side without really looking, doing more thinking than anything else.

"So is there anything else, or can you show me at least what direction they went so that I may try to catch up with them? Well I mean, write it down so that if I do forget, I can at least have a reference of some sort."

He nodded, as though still interested in the conversation, and said, "Ah, inventing. I might try my hand at that. I just try to help people most of the time..."

While Glitch was talking, Carrion murmured a short spell under his breath. Like the time he had tricked another captive of us, this spell would disguise his real form. What Glitch would see is a normal-looking human, dressed in a sort of bland suit, and wearing glasses. He rarely disguised his true form most of the time, because he liked looking scary, even if very few people became frightened nowadays.

He startled when he realized that Glitch had remembered a name. DG. He so wanted to ask who that was, being so naturally curious. But Carrion held his tongue - he wanted Glitch out of the Tower, after all.

"Oh yes, this way please." He began walking towards the door, still disguised, and waited for Glitch to get up.

Glitch rose from the chair, half paying attention to what was going on and half on the fact the person he was looking at was not whom he was just speaking to. "I uh... did I miss something? Where did the guy with the fish tank thingy around his neck go? And who are you?"

Glitch really didn't think he had forgotten anything because he still remembered that odd fellow because he had caught a few glances of them while they worked, and if he did remember that, then that meant he hadn't forgotten... yet.

"That was Christopher," he answered without missing a beat. "I am John Mischief. We've just met."

Carrion was much too proud to admit to perhaps making a mistake, and so wouldn't bother to correct it. He'd underestimated Glitch at his ability to remember, but it hadn't ruined anything really. He didn't care anymore, since all he wanted to do what get Glitch out of his Tower before he decided that letting his nightmares have at him was a good idea after all.

'No, no... I can't risk having him remember something like that.'

"You want to find your friends, yes? Well, they're not here, of course." Carrion opened the door and stepped aside. "I'm afraid it'll take some time to catch up with them, but I'm sure you'll make it."

Glitch did move forward towards the door, but spoke as he did so "But he said his name was John, that much I do remember at the moment, well until I forget it anyway. And yes, I would like to find them, but I'm afraid I'll end up getting lost because once my memory goes, I'll forget where I was even headed" he really didn't want to get lost, not when it could bring trouble his way.

All of this was rather confusing to say the very least.

"Well, I fear that that is not my problem."

No one had ever accused Carrion of being helpful at the right time or place. Neither did his people attribute things like mercy or compassion to his personality. But he wasn't going to inform Glitch of this, either.

"I cannot help you any longer. But at least you have a clear head." He gripped the doorknob, becoming so agitated that he feared breaking it.

The air was rather heavy, this much Glitch could tell. And the open door was an invitation to leave, be it the fact this 'John' was not being the most helpful of people and making things rather confusingly wrong. Perhaps his welcome was no longer 'welcome' because something was amiss in all of this, and leaving would be for the best.

Stepping through the door, Glitch found himself in a hallway and turned around in order to speak to 'John' to find the way out of wherever he was. It wasn't until he turned around with his hand raised, a single finger extended, that his features went blank and he looked at the face before him after a few blinks. "Oh um, hello... I'm Glitch and you are?"

Those were the magic words.

But without another word, Carrion closed and locked the door, not regreting for one moment his sudden rudeness. He gave a sigh of relief, grateful to be rid of frustrating Glitch. Let him be a nuisance for another Niflheimer.

At least he was able to accomplish one thing today: He delivered the music box.
