WHO: Alice, Frank, and Kain
WHERE: Just outside Asgard, then to the horse field.
WHEN: The afternoon after Alice returns and Kain discusses catching horses with her.
RATING: PG
WARNINGS: None, really.
SUMMARY: Kain, Frank, and Alice are going on a horse hunting adventure!

Kain waited patiently on the front steps of Asgard for Alice and Frank to show up, not really knowing what to expect on this outing. How exactly was he going to convince this horse leader to lead the other horses back to Asgard? If what Alice said about horses was true, and she may well have been wrong for all he knew.

He sighed, studying the wood grain of the handrails. Hopefully it wouldn't be too difficult, but if horses were anything like chocobos, they were going to be in for quite the fight trying to tame them.

Frank headed for the steps at Asgard. He hoped he was going to be of some help with finding horses. He didn't really know a heck of a lot about them, but where Kain came from there weren't any horses at all, so maybe he could help a little. Frank had actually ridden a horse when he was a kid, on a relative's farm, but that had been a long time ago and of course it had been a regular tame horse.

He also wanted to make sure Alice would be all right, though then again Kain would be much better at that than he would.

Frank saw Kain on the steps, remembering that the last time he had "seen" him Kain had been in his own body, and he'd been looking at himself.

"Hi," he said eventually, feeling as awkward as he usually did around people. "Thanks for having me along."

Kain nodded in welcome to the man, a slow smile working it's way onto his face. "Oh, don't worry about it, Frank. I have a feeling that we'll need all the help we can get." He chuckled, and glanced out at the forest. He felt slightly awkward around the man whose shoes he had spent a day in not that long ago, and he was sure Frank felt the same.

"So..." the dragoon began, shuffling slightly and returning his gaze to Frank. "What do you know about horses?"

"Not a whole lot," Frank admitted. "My uncle... well, he was my great-uncle, he had a farm and I rode one a few times. But I'm not going to lie; I don't know what to do with wild horses."

"Hmm." It didn't seem as though many people had horses on Frank and Alice's world. "You know, it's a little different where we come from, with chocobos, I mean. Almost everyone has one, or at least has ridden one."

Kain leaned up against the railing, hoping it was sturdy enough to support his weight as he waited. He realized that this was probably the first real conversation he'd had with Frank, and he wondered why he hadn't met the man face to face sooner.

"Chocobos are birds, you were saying?" asked Frank. It sounded kind of funny, people riding giant birds. But then he had heard of people riding ostriches back on earth, though apparently that wasn't so great for the ostrich. And maybe chocobos were bigger than that.

"There was a time when horses were important for transportation, back on Earth, and most people were used to them, but that was before I was born."

Quiet footsteps clicked against the steps as Alice came down to join them, a tan bag and a book she'd clearly borrowed from the library in one hand. Her hair was, as always, tied carefully into a braid and bun so that only her bangs were free to flirt with the breeze. She glanced shyly at the two of them for a moment and bowed her head for a moment respectfully. "Ah, I'm sorry if I kept you two waiting. Hello, Frank. Hello, Kain."

[ooc: I'm so sorry for the slow reply, I'll kick it up now. xD]

"Yes, large yellow birds, as tall as a man." Kain replied with a nod. "Really? So in your time they have moved on to other modes of transportation? On my world, we had just started building machines for flight."

Kain straightened up as he caught sight of Alice, feeling only the smallest flash of irritation at her tardiness. It was hard to stay mad at someone who reminded him so much of Rosa.

"Good afternoon, Alice," he began, noticing the bag and book. "You're brought some supplies?"

((ooc: Don't worry about it! I was slow to reply yesterday too, got called into work early, haha. x_x))

"In my day, even when I was young, it was pretty rare for anyone to use horses for regular transportation. We had cars for ground transportation. But in Miss Elliot's time," -- he gestured toward her -- "they were still around more, I believe. And definitely still used for farm work."

Frank realized he might be rambling again and shut up.

[OOC: I, on the other hand, worked a night shift and I'm off to sleep. But I'll be on again in before my next shift.]

She nodded in agreement to Frank. "I brought a book about horses in case it'll help and food for them...and us, if either of you get hungry." It wasn't much, but it was certainly stuff that'd help the hunger stay down until they returned. She continued down the steps and passed them, looking around for a moment. "Hmm..."

It seemed like a good plan, though Kain still wasn't so sure about trying to catch creatures that they didn't know much about. He followed Alice at a respectful distance, casting a glance around after she did. There didn't seem to be anything out of the ordinary.

"Which way are we heading?" He asked, glancing over at Frank/

Alice had said she had seen the signs of horses, so all he could do now was go where she did.

"I guess we just have to follow Alice. At least we have a barn ready for the horses," he said.

Alice pointed northeast and smiled at them. "This way, please. It's a bit of a walk, but we'll get there soon enough." It was a lot of ground to cover, and admittedly...

It probably was going to earn a look or two when Frank and Kain realized how far Alice had ventured from Asgard after all. Still, it was worth it, and she hadn't gotten into any trouble!

"I did read up on horses a bit before this, and...I found out that one of the most important things to do with a horse is never, ever startle them or act as if you aren't behind them. They'll kick you and cause heavy damage, so... Try to approach them so that they're facing you, when we find them," Alice said helpfully on the way.

Kain followed Alice, quietly listening to her advice. He didn't exactly feel like getting kicked by a four legged creature that had looked slightly terrifying, if Lina's sketch could be trusted...which was doubtful.

"Are they nervous animals?" He asked, hoping that at the very least they weren't easy to spook.

Frank walked along with the two of them, listening to Alice's advice.

"They can be pretty nervous," he threw in, "especially if they're not domesticated."

He had heard a few things about the wild mustangs in the U.S.

She nodded. "They tend to have varying temperaments, but some can be much more nervous than others. Some are even a bit too violent for domestication, but it didn't seem like i'd come across that kind."

The conversation helped pass the time as they walked on. They were a lot closer to the place already. "I brought treats to tempt them with, so it might help us win them over faster," she smiled nervously.

((Hahaha! I couldn't resist, that sketch is still burned into my mind. <3))

The thought that the animals might now be only nervous, but violent disheartened Kain a bit, but he trusted Alice when she said that she didn't think any of them were that wild.

He was starting to notice just how far they'd come, and he glanced between Frank and Alice, raising an eyebrow. "These horses sure live a long way off," he noted, his tone showing his displeasure. "Just how far away from Asgard did you get?"

Frank was also a little nervous thinking of Alice going this far from Asgard alone. He hoped he could convince her not to do it again, though he didn't want to treat her like a kid.

"What exactly did you bring for the horses, Miss Elliot?" he asked.

Oh, dear. So they'd noticed. Alice's face fell and she glanced away. "Just...a little farther, truly." It wasn't a lie.

In fact, they were reaching the edge of the meadow where she'd found them! She could hear the faint sounds of animal activity as she turned to Frank and smiled. "Oats! Lots of oats, I heard they like them. Carrots, too."

"Hm," was Kain's only reply, as he bit back the lecture about safety that he'd been about ready to give her. He'd heard the faint shuffling of the animals, too, and peered out into the meadow to see a small herd of what he assumed were horses. He had to admit...they were impressive creatures, and looked almost nothing like Lina's rendition of them. Unlike a chocobo, they looked as though they could carry more than one person.

"So...these are horses?" He asked, just to be sure. He could see why she had brought treats along to try to appease them, they were very large.

"Yes," said Frank. It has been quite a while since he had seen a real horse.

"They're beautiful," he said. They really were, regal in fact.

"How do we... start this?" he asked.

Alice stared at the majestic horses for a moment before stepping forward. "I'll...try something, first." Where was the head of the pack...? Which horse was it?

She went to one of the closer ones - a dark brown horse, beautiful and healthy. It was chewing on grass but paused as she came toward it. It stepped back slightly and neighed.

Alice continued to walk very, very slowly towards it as she placed some oats in her hand. When it became clear the horse wasn't going to run away, she held her cupped hand out to the horse, offering it the oats. "Hello, my name's Alice. I don't want to hurt you at all, but you're so beautiful I wanted to try to spend some time with you. May I?"

The horse paused a moment, as if unsure. The horse took a step backwards and shook its head as if in deliberation. Finally, the horse lowered its head down and took some of the oats into its mouth, chewing. Alice beamed. Were these domestic horses after all? Had Metatron always placed them there, waiting for them to be found...?

But where was the leader?

Kain followed Alice's lead and slowly approached the horses, who didn't look very concerned with their presence. They really were beautiful creatures.

A gray horse with a white snout caught his eye, and it seemed to be watching the three of them with more curiosity and apprehension than the rest of the horses. As Alice had done, he began speaking to it in what he hoped was a calm, soothing voice. "Uh...hey there. I'm Kain. We've all just come to..." before he could finish his sentence, the horse neighed loudly and tossed it's head, and the other horses seemed to become a slightly spooked because of it.

"I think...this one may be the leader." Kain said, looking over at Frank and Alice, silently asking for help. The horse didn't seem to like him too much, but that could have been because he'd felt slightly silly talking to the animal.

Frank moved a little closer to the gray horse, very slowly.

"Hey there now. We're just here to ask for help," he said, as if the horse could understand that.

"Miss Elliot, may I have a carrot?"

Alice walked slowly to Frank and held out a carrot for Frank with a smile. She was moving carefully so she wouldn't startle the horses. "Here, Mr. Sunderland." She glanced at Kain, still full of hope.

If things didn't work out quickly, that was okay - they could get the horses to warm up to them eventually! Surely...

Kain couldn't help but feel slightly inspired by the hopeful look that Alice shot him, and the horse did look as though it were calming down a bit, from the combined efforts of Frank and Alice. It would probably be best to let them take over, at this stage.

He took a couple of cautious steps back, giving Frank more room to approach the horse, silently wishing him luck.

Frank walk toward the horse very carefully, murmuring the kind of nonsense people use with animals.

"Hey there now... You're a good horse... a pretty horse. I'm not going to hurt you... Do you want a carrot?"

The horse stretched its neck out and very gingerly tasted the carrot. Frank, afraid to move, watched as it took a bite.

The horse seemed more content...perhaps it wasn't really a wild horse? There wasn't really a way of knowing, but this gray horse seemed less nervous than they were.

But that would make sense, since it seemed to be the leader. It was more alert and careful with them, but it didn't seem afraid. "We'd like to get to know you, very much," Alice added with a smile.

As Kain watched, the horse, seemingly deciding that the three humans weren't a threat, pulled the carrot from Frank's hand and ate it happily.

Kain couldn't help but smile. It looked like they were getting somewhere. "Do you think it would let us touch it?" He asked, watching as the horse sniffed at Frank, as though trying to see if he had any more food.

Frank patted the horse on its velvety nose gently.

"Maybe it would let us lead it?" he proposted cautiously.

Alice tapped a finger on her mouth thoughtfully before nodding. "Well...let's try?" She walked away from them and held out a palm full of oats. The horse's nose twitched and it snorted, but it was watching her now. More specifically, it was eyeing the oats in her hand.

"Why not come over here and let me feed you?" she smiled warmly at the horse. It took a moment, but eventually the horse trotted over to her, bent its head down and began to eat from her hand.

She glanced up at the others. "Would that work as leading?"
