Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Entry tags:dante, finished thread, l, light, rating: pg-13, setting: area around niflheim, setting: niflheim

Who: L, Light, and Dante
Where: Niflheim, general vicinity
When: After Light dramatically attempts to end his own life in the presence of L and two kittens. Talk about tasteless!
Rating: PG-13, yo.
Warnings: I have no idea, as of yet.
Summary: L drags Light's temporally damaged ass back to Niflheim, leaving him in the protective clutches of Dante. Hopefully, he'll be well received for returning one of Niflheim's most controversial members... or, at least, hopefully the denizens of the Dark Mansion will be too effing surprised that L came back to the place after certain highly publicized events. Not to mention with the perpetrator of such events in tow.

L stopped to rest on a large boulder about seat-height. He was exhausted, but something was making him go forward. It wasn't guilt... he'd hate himself, if it was, but it was in that neighborhood.

Light had shot himself.

Now, L literally held his life in his hands. The two kittens followed, a ghost and a shadow haunting his footsteps, as he made his way towards a place that still appeared routinely in his nightmares. The last time he'd been there, he'd been half-suicidal and completely insane.

Now, Light was completely suicidal and half-insane. That was an interesting turnaround.

Maybe the kittens knew where Lights friends, if he had any, were, since they lived with him. As he rested, L contemplated his next move.

The kittens stared up at him. Sadly, it was very doubtful they could guide L anywhere outside Light's room..and the only other person they'd actually seen was Walter.

...And Walter didn't do very well with animals...what with past experiences and all.

Luke stared up at him with a questioning gaze, as if asking 'what next?' while Touta simple worried over Light, running his paws over his form and mewling softly.

After receiving the summons over the communications systems, Dante gathered her apothecary supplies and her alchemical journals - in a basket beneath a scarf and gardening tools for camouflage - and left Niflheim. She looked nothing more than a woman going to tend her garden, though her lavender Victorian gown looked a touch opulent for gardening.

But all of her high necked and long skirted dresses looked as though they belonged on a woman far less used to any form of manual labor.

She doubted she would have trouble finding the place, and she was correct. The directions and description had been enough. Honestly, what else could Light get himself into? She only hoped she could actually help him. It had been some time since she dealt with bullet wounds, in any capacity. Homunculi had no need for healing, and the hurts and illnesses she treated under her guise as an apothecary were farming town ailments.

But she would do what she could.

Not wishing to startle, Dante cleared her throat to alert her presence as she approached closely enough to be heard.

L jumped, coming off as far more skittish than he would have liked to. He stood, brushing the dirt off his knees and leaving a smear of blood on his jeans. He'd done what he could... suppressed the bleeding, tried to keep the brain activity going... but he was no surgeon. And even though L could probably perform an operation intuitively if he had to, he didn't have the instruments or facilities.

"You came... how long has it been?" L asked anxiously. "It seems like it's been so long... but it's still light out. The sun hasn't set, so it can't have been..." he shut his mouth, aware that he was speaking only for the sake of staving off silence.

"It has not been long." Dante advanced, her stride quick as she came closer to inspect Light.

So this was the object of Light's obsession in person. Interesting. She didn't know what she'd expected, but a tired looking slip of a boy hadn't been it. Now wasn't the time to take stock, however.

She ignored him for the most part, choosing instead to kneel beside Light and get a look at the wound. She set down her basket, violet eyes narrowed as she surveyed the damage.

"Oh, Light," she said, sadly, shaking her head. Her eyes moved to L for a moment. "Tell me exactly what happened here. And I will require your assistance, so I hope you're more competent than I've been led to believe."

The kittens moved closer to Dante, almost as if preparing to attack, if need be. Luke's eyes never strayed from Dante's form, keeping a close watch on her, but Touta was a lot more unfocused and jittery, continuing to look back and forth between the woman and his master.

L nodded slowly, piecing together his thoughts before uttering them. He was extremely uneasy with this demure woman... she seemed attractive, but warning bells went off in L's head every time he tried to think of her as such. Something about her wasn't right.

"He wanted to meet," he said in a quiet voice. "I admit that I thought he'd try something, but thought he'd attempt to kill me first. So I took precautions... but he shot himself, to make a point, I suppose." L was reluctant to mention what they'd talked about, especially because he didn't want to mention Blythe and, in some indirect way, cause her to come to harm.

"I can assist, if you need me to," he said, rubbing his elbow subconsciously. His pride bristled angrily when Dante implied that he was less than competent, but he wasn't about to say that he'd actually meant for Light to come to some level of harm.

"And keep the animals away, please," Dante added, tucking back the lace at her sleeves. She didn't roll the fabric up - she couldn't take the risk - but made sure that the hanging spills of lace weren't going to interfere with her work.

"I will warn you now that I have little practical experience with wounds of this nature," she went on, pulling out a glass bottle with some sort of murky liquid within. It would, at least, keep Light from feeling pain or slipping into a coma. "But I will do all I can, with all of the tools I have at my disposal." Which included alchemy. She flashed a look towards L once more.

"I will trust that whatever happens here today, neither you nor I will speak a word of it to anyone?" She imagined the boy wouldn't want his teammates to know he was meeting with Light, and she had no desire for her true alchemical powers to be widely known.

"I understand," L replied, reaching hesitantly towards the kittens in an attempt to keep them away from Dante and her work. He was hardly reassured that Dante didn't have much experience with gunshot wounds, but he was silent. He asked himself what he really wanted... Light to get better, or Light to die? He was met with more silence.

"I won't tell a soul," L said seriously. "I believe you know as well as I that this meeting would raise numerous questions I don't know if I'm ready to answer."

"And nor will I," Dante agreed, sliding her arm beneath Light's shoulders to lift him to a position where she could administer the tonic she'd brought him. Her movements were professional and gentle, clear indication that she wasn't lying when she spoke of her abilities as a healer.

"I imagine a large number of my own teammates would prefer me drawn and quartered if they learned I had been in a position to hurt one of Asgard's and wasted it." She brought the tonic to Light's lips, parting them to allow the liquid in. A few strokes of the boy's throat to ensure he swallowed, and hopefully the medicine would begin working quickly.

"Unlike a great many of them," she went on, easing Light down so his head was in her lap and easy to manipulate and tend to, "I have no desire to do any of you any harm whatsoever. There is a silk packet of small medical tools in my basket, please get it for me. I assume the bullet needs removing?"

L shuddered. He'd known that he was wanted dead ever since he'd made a name for himself by being such a smart little detective, but somehow, hearing it from Dante made it unpleasantly real. He watched her work, feeling reassured slightly when she gave her reasons for not wanting to be found out.

He quickly found the silk packet, holding it delicately between his thumbs and forefingers. "Yes... bullets are usually removed, in this sort of situation..."

"I meant," Dante said dryly, "that as I can see no wound where the bullet exited, that it is still inside." Of course it needed to removed if it were still inside. She took the packet and flipped it open, removing a narrow probing tool.

She knew, of course, all about the brain. Her anatomical knowledge was impeccable, and beyond what most on her own world knew. And she knew it was a fragile and delicate organ. She had done little with living brains, and never something as tricky as this. It was dangerous to go rooting around inside of them, after all.

"I can't promise he will walk away from this with all mental facilities in tact," she said, honestly, a note of sadness in her voice. "What I am going to have to do is unorthodox and quite dangerous in the hands of one less skilled than I. I can remove the bullet without causing further damage, but I can make no promises that I can fix whatever damage has already been done."

In all honesty, Niflhiem's true doctor would be a better choice, but she knew he could not be called upon. He would ask too many questions, and not keep them to himself.

Withdrawing submissively when met with Dante's patronizing words, L watched as she worked. He knew that Light probably wouldn't be the same after the damage he'd done... and that the world would be a different place for the two of them and individually regardless.

"I was afraid of that..." L said quietly. "It's all right, though. He's your teammate... so whatever damage there is will be more your concern than mine."

"I am not a foolish woman," Dante said, smoothly. She slipped the narrow probe into the wound, to determine where the bullet was. She wasn't surprised at what she could feel - jagged bone, from where the skull had shattered, slick blood and fluids - and finally the bullet itself.

"You called for help to aide him. You have some concern for him." With her free hand, Dante reached into the recesses of her gown and pulled forth a scrap of paper. A few mumbled words and there was a glow around the probe, and metallic liquid spilled forth from its hollow center into the grass. At least the bullet was gone now.

"I will do what I can to heal this. But repairing the damage is dangerous." She could end up causing Light's brain to burst within his skull if even one calculation was the smallest bit off.

L nodded, closing his eyes and taking a deep breath. "He could have killed me, but didn't. It only makes sense that I should try to save him now, doesn't it?"

The fact was, it didn't even truly make sense to L. And that worried him.

Dante's removal of the bullet complete, she warned him of the danger of repairing the damage. Part of him wondered why that was... and the other part begged him to PLEASE not find out.

The kittens moved toward L now, deciding they preferred this more familiar face over Dante's. Besides, their master seemed to have a history with him, and, whether it was good or bad, it was better than nothing.

Besides, they had to attempt to figure out his true intentions with their master. Just what was Yagami Light to him?

"Not particularly." Dante was only half-paying attention to L at this point. "It's a rare man indeed who extends that honor." She brushed back Light's hair, working over the algorithms and formulas in her mind. She hated to admit it, but this had always been Hohenheim's area. Oh, she'd made a great deal of progress with the red stones, and through Lust's little puppets, but....

"Hold him, please," she said, gesturing once more to L. "He may convulse."

Rare? Tch... as if. L found himself secretly mocking that statement, though it felt true than many things.

L was unsure where Dante wanted him to "hold" Light... but he didn't need to be told that convulsions during delicate work were dangerous. He placed one hand between Light's shoulders and the other at an un-injured place on Light's head, hoping that he wasn't seeming "incompetent." But at this point, what else could he do but follow orders?

"Yes, like that," Dante encouraged, nodding. "Do what you can to keep him still." With Ryuzaki holding onto Light she was free to retrieve one of her journals. She didn't care that Ryuzaki could see what was written - it wasn't as though the boy could decipher complex alchemical code when he came from a world where alchemy didn't exist. The runes and symbols and diagrams would mean nothing.

"I've done a great deal of study on biological applications of my art," she explained, knowing that people preferred to be kept abreast of what was being performed. "Flesh is matter, the same as anything else, and can be manipulated. But because it is living matter, it is...fragile and unpredictable."

L was frustrated that he couldn't read Dante's journal, but he supposed that that was to be expected. Maybe Kain was on to something, about him being too nosy.

He sure HOPED that Dante had done a great deal of study in that area... if not, they'd be in deep manure. Hell, they might be anyway. "Fragile and unpredictable..." L repeated, as if only half-listening. "Just do what you need to."

"Flesh isn't the same as stone or dirt," Dante explained, eyes skimming her notes. "Flesh...knows what it's meant to be. It resists attempts to change it and shape it into something else, even other flesh."

That was the best way she had to explain the particular reactions that could occur when transmuting anything that was alive.

"And flesh is needed to create more flesh." Which was one of the problems here. She didn't exactly have spare bits of human matter in her gardening basket.

"I understand what you're saying," L said slowly, "but... what exactly does that mean? Will I have to take a carving knife to my arm? Is that what you're implying?" He could feel his temper rising slightly, though he made an effort to control the volume of his voice. It would just figure, if Light's stupid act would result in further sacrifice on L's part. He was already risking his life by meeting with Dante, after all...

"No." Dante shook her head. "I'll use his own."

If this didn't work - and while she was confident in her abilities, Dante wasn't a fool - there was no sense in damaging someone else as well. Besides, this young man's trust could come in handy someday.

"You must hold him tightly. While he cannot feel anything now, the brain still sends out signals."

He held his hands firmly against their places on Light's body, preparing for any and all convulsions that might occur.

Dante supposed it was now or never. Her manner as she traced alchemical symbols on Light's forehead was professional and detached, now ignoring both Ryuzaki and Light's small pets. Her focus was only on the alchemy, her mind spinning the proper (she assumed) algorithms and formulas.

It was no different than spinning cloth. Flesh was matter, nothing more, and could be manipulated as anything else. Pursing her lips, Dante placed her hands on either side of Light's head and began the transmutation.

A blue glow surrounded them both as the alchemy began.

Shivering, L continued to hold Light, his spirit growing restless and wary of what was clearly magic. It was beyond his power to assist in any way... but even now, he wondered if he'd been right to help Light in the first place. He was... he would be angry, about this. L would come to see that he could have prevented a great deal of heartache just by killing him and having done with it.

But, sadly, the nature of the world was such that decisions are not commonly supported by the evidence of their aftermath.

Dante wove the complex threads that would begin to repair the damage to Light's brain, watching as beneath the blue lights that intensified as she worked as the wound began to shift. The sound of soft flesh regrowing and joining was audible, a sickly, wet sound. Light's prone body shook and spasmed, and she could only trust Ryuzaki to hold him still.

The wound wasn't completely closed when Dante took her hands away, but it now resembled simple a blow to the head rather than a bullet to the brain.

Already, she could feel the deterioration of her body begin to spread from the effort.

If L had thought that there was something wrong about Dante, he knew it now, for true. It was almost as if she was sucking life out of the air surrounding them, or from deep within herself... in any case, she was most definitely taking it from one thing in order to give it to another. He continued to hold Light steady, the effort causing his arms to ache, but his dedication to competence winning over. He shuddered and tried to ignore the sound of flesh re-growing... somehow, he almost preferred the sound of flesh being rent.

"Are you all right?" he inquired softly, when she was finished, as near as he could tell. He wondered if healing taxed Dante, the way it did Blythe.

If that was the case... he doubted he could provide it. "Can you get help, to take him back to Niflheim?" L asked. "I would, but I can't go near that place..." It wasn't just that he'd promised members of Asgard he wouldn't... his heart raced and his skin crawled to even think of returning there.

Hastily, he retreated, the shadows in the woods swallowing him softly as he hurried back towards Asgard.
