Entry tags:dante, finished thread, setting: library in niflheim

Who: Dante and Walter
Where: Niflheim's Library
When: Today
Rating: PG for now
Summary: Dante offers a hand of friendship to Walter, and invites him to keep her company in the library.

Dante dressed demurely and somberly when she went to meet with Walter in the library. High necked, matronly soft lavender dress, lace spilling over the nigh collar and the backs of her hands. Something Victorian, soothing in color and chosen to project innocence and warmth. she pulled her hair back, the perfect image of an old fashioned wife and mother.

She had also performed a small transmutation before heading to the library. It was a simple thing, turning one of the many pillows about the room she shared with that infuriating 'doctor' into a stuffed dog. Something soft and endearing, that a child would like.

She knew there was more than only the child within Niflheim's latest acquisition, but it was the child she believed she could tie to her side. It was simple to gain their trust and bond with them. Even homunculi had managed to do so. She suspected it would be an easy thing. And she needed someone loyal. She didn't trust Light, and besides, she'd wait and see if the pieces that remained of him were worth anything.

But this Walter, who had caused so much panic and fear just by arriving.... He was worth her immediate attention.

She entered the library and took down a book - it took her some time to find something that would add to the image she wished to present - and sat down, book in her lap, stuffed dog behind the chair, hidden for the moment.

Curiousity called for action, and even though Walter would be uncomfortable at best in the midsts of a woman, Dante seemed fairly... ok, very, nice to him.

So what did Walter have to lose? Other than the time added to his lifespan, and perhaps that was all that he didn't really need, nor wanted for that matter. And the promise of a gift was almost enough to 'hook line and sinker' him into following Dante into the Library. And the thought of being punished for not following through such a 'promise' had crossed Walter's mind more than once, to be honest.

Cautiously, the door creaked open. First, a single, solitary, milky green eye peeped out of how much space the doorway would allow him to see, then soon as he felt it was 'safe', he ventured further with the shabby, yet well-taken cared for, doll in tow, the grip on the beloved old gift was almost like rigor mortis.

When Walter found her, he moved a little slower, and much softer, than normal, half expecting Dante to randomly attack him. Walter soon figured out that it was the opposite, and slowly sank into a chair across from her, the chair almost engulfing him and his almost-too-skinny-its-unhealthy form.

"You must be Walter."

Dante smiled, warmly. She almost wished this body was older. It was difficult to continually project the image of a matronly woman, ravaged by grief and the unfairness of life, in such a young body. The breaking down due to alchemy aged her slightly, but not nearly enough as she would prefer.

So this was Walter Sullivan. She wasn't good at placing age, and his rather worn and emaciated form only added to the confusion. But he had the mind of a child, currently, and that was all that mattered.

Dante folded her hands on the open book in her lap, not making any move towards Walter.

"Thank you for coming to spend time with me. I get so very lonely here. I miss my family, I'm afraid."

Walter nodded, still visibly unsure of the entire idea, now moreso than ever. The demon was almost hissing something like, "Be careful around this one, Little Walter," but didn't say anything more than that. Of course, Walter winced slightly at the pin prick of pain the voice created in his temples.

"It's ok. I need to try to talk to other people more." He said slowly, as if trying to calculate what would make a positive response from the woman sitting across from him as his eyes caught the movement of Dante's hands and rested there for a fairly short amount of time. He smiled meekly, almost too gently as he said, "I've never had a family... There, at that place, we're only their tools." Walter knew he was being much too kind for what they did to him, but he didn't really want to delve into that spot of his mind at the moment.

Dante nodded, solemnly. "I'm very sorry to hear that, Walter. I had a family, but I lost them a long time ago and I've been alone ever since. It isn't very nice, being alone, is it?" She smiled and reached behind her chair, pulling out the stuffed toy dog she had transmuted.

"This is for you," she told him. He'd seemed sad at the loss of his pup, after all. And he had spoken of having an old doll of his own, as his single possession. It had seemed a fitting gift. "I used to make toys like this for my son, when he was young."

He couldn't wrap the thoughts in his head, or even force them out when she said that, but a soft sound of surprise leaped from his throat when he saw what she had for him.

Instantly, Walter's eyes began to fight the tears that couldn't stop coming out, and he soon gave it up. It looked like it was too good for him, but the feeling that something was his, hopefully without any repercussions.

Cautiously, he reached for the stuffed toy, watching her face, and only her face, for any changes in personality.

Dante held out the toy, her expression and demeanor remaining friendly and relaxed. The man-child certainly had lived a difficult life, if this was his reaction. But children were so emotional.

"Go on, there's nothing to be frightened of," she urged, her tone warm and inviting. "It's a gift."

The tears really didn't stop until he gripped the toy, and tugged on it gently, the fear still lingering in a heartbeat, as he looked down at it. "You sew really well." He complmented, impressed with Dante's 'patchwork'. Walter was an alright seamstress; did well in biology and other such classes when he went to school.

Once again, the chair dwarfed him, almost literally sucking him in. "Thank you, Dante." Once again, he had a smile that was somewhat carefully configured and yet truthful.

Dante laughed a little, but it was a pleased sound. "No, Walter, I don't sew," she explained. "I can make things. Out of other things. But thank you. I'm very glad you like it. If there's ever anything you want, please tell me."

She smiled, her hands folded in her lap once more.

"I do so enjoy making people happy."

Walter's head turned to the side a tad, like he was trying to figure out what she meant by making things from other things. Maybe she would tell him later. "Yes ma'am."

For a while, Walter was quiet, until he finally decided to ask that question, "Um... What did you mean by 'make things out of other things'? If you don't want to tell me -- it's ok." The newer toy joined the one that Eileen gave him seemingly ages ago, both huddled against his chest protectively.

"It's something called 'alchemy'," Dante explained. "Where I come from, it's the science my world relies on. I'm what's called an alchemist. I use alchemy to create things that help people." Oh, the innocence of children. Dante cherished it - it made them so easy to mold.

"Alchemy can fix things that are broken, or turn one thing into another thing, or create something from just dirt and sticks. Alchemy can even make medicine, to make sick people get better, or make dangerous places safe for people to go. That's why alchemists are so important where I come from."

"I remember hearing about that in high school." Walter said mainly to himself, but loud enough for Dante to hear. "But I don't think it was that advanced."

He thought about that for a little while, then said, a little softer, but still loud enough for her to hear, "Then it can hurt people too?" Walter didn't look at her face this time, as if his mind were else where.

Dante looked away, her face turning to an expression of sorrow. It wasn't real, but she was quite good at presenting what she wanted to present.

"Some people use it to hurt others," she admitted. "But alchemy is for the good of the people. It shouldn't be used to hurt anyone, unless it is the only way to defend yourself. It is a gift, a blessing, a treasure mankind has been allowed to use. It isn't a weapon to be used for destruction. I hate those that would twist it into something malevolent."

Shit. I messed up. Shit. Walter mentally kicked himself, and Valtiel laughed deep within the confines of his soul, once again sending a wave of pain.

"I didn't mean to upset you, Dante." He apologized almost immediately. "My weapons... well, what that thing has told me, mine can't be used for good, unlike yours."

"No, Walter, it's alright." Dante smiled at him. "It isn't your fault. Others have asked me the same, if this ability of mine can be used for harm." And of course it could, but she wasn't about to let everyone know what she could do with it.

"I'm sure that's not true," she went on, tilting her head. "Whether a thing is good or bad all depends on how it's used. What... what is it you can do? I'm sure it can be used for good as well as ill."

She did want to know just what this Walter was capable of.

"I don't really know... He knows how to use it better than me," The word 'he' had a heavy tone of anger in his voice, and it even revealed itself in his features. "but if I let him out, I don't know if I can keep him in control." Unbeknownst to Walter, the groundwork was being laid out for him; the room was starting to look sickly, the books began to become tattered, and the books were almost literally falling apart. The room itself looked like it crawled out of Stephen Kings sickest nightmare; even a couple of the lights would flicker around for a bit until they finally died, only to come back alive with vigor, then suddenly began to die again.

"It hurts when I try." He said somewhat pathetically. "Like I'm dying again."

"What...what are you doing?" Dante asked, rising slowly to her feet and looking about the room as it changed. "No, it's alright, you can stop. Don't hurt yourself, dear. There's no need for that...."

What was that? It was like the room was...diseased. She shuddered, kneeling down before Walter and hoping to get him to stop this. She respected the power he had, but....

It made her feel uncomfortable.

"Relax, Walter. It's alright. I don't want you to feel like you're dying, Walter."

"That, I can't stop. It always does that if I'm in one place too long." He admitted, closing his eyes defensively to try to combat the disease and decay of the room, but to no avail.

"I hurt only when I try to make other things appear. I get too weak to move sometimes." He whispered, choosing not to open his eyes when Dante knelt before him. In fact, he tensed, a little uncomfortable with someone, anyone, getting this close.

"What is this?" Dante asked, quietly. Perhaps it was best not to let him know this bothered her. She didn't want to send the boy - man, whatever - into hysterics.

"Just relax, Walter. Take deep breaths, it's alright. It's just a bit of...rust and wear." Decay. Disease. Death. Dante could feel it creeping into the very walls and floors of the room.

She abhorred death.

This must have been what he meant, when he asked her if she could protect herself.

The room started to clear, and whatever damages happened began to twist back into normal; or as normal as such a place could get. It all sucked back to the emanciated man sitting in the chair, sweating just a tad from the mental battle.

You want to protect her? How cute. Came Valtiel's voice once more, echoing with a slight chuckle.

Already, the god-awfully old demon was catching on to her plan, somewhat. Why not let her play with Walter a little longer? He was in no hurry. Until he got what he wanted, all they had was time to kill.

"There, see?" Dante smiled, relaxing as the room went back to what it had been. Frightening, certainly, but without the stains of death and despair clinging to it.

And Walter looked as though it had taken a great deal of effort on his part. Interesting.

"Look at you, you look exhausted. Are you hungry? Would you like something to drink?"

"No thanks. I'll be fine in a little while." He smiled meekly once more, but it was a little strained this time. He didn't want to become bothersome, or even a small thorn in her side.

His color returned to normal soon enough. Needless to say, he was used to getting exhausted, so this little fiasco was nothing really new to him.

"Are you certain? I don't like seeing you look this way...." Dante frowned, thoughtfully. "What is this thing inside you that has this power? And how did you come by it? You don't seem to enjoy it at all."

"Yes Ma'am." He nodded a tad, choosing not to move much more than what was necessary.

Hearing the questions, he frowned slightly. "A demon, not an angel like they said.

"See, at the orphanage -- it was run by the Order, and they used violence and threats to keep up in line. They fed us lies, and I was chosen for some reason to keep Valtiel in me, to ensure the rebirth of the 'Holy Mother'. But it was all lies..."

"Mostly?" Dante prompted. "Are there still people out there who wish to harm you?"

She was on firmer footing here. If she'd tamed that homunculus child - admittedly with Sloth's aide - she could tame this man with a child's mind. Offering protection was always a tried and true way to lay the groundwork.

Walter looked absolutely elated for a moment, until...

"So true. I'm to blame."

His voice was cold, and a hair faster than before. There were golden rings around his pupils, and the ever present smirk plastered itself across his face. The air turned almost repugnant with the scent of hate, bitterness, and almost ...hunger?

One thing was certain, this wasn't Walter Sullivan. This was the one that Henry, Eileen, and many others hated, perhaps even feared.

Those eyes, devoid of everything but intense negative feelings were focused on Dante. Almost as if he could see every thought, every secret she tried to keep dear to her heart, and had the gall to say them aloud.

"Manipulating... almost too well. You've done this before, with the heart of a child, haven't you?" The egotistical smirk never faded as he admitted, "Keep going this way, and Little Walter might be wrapped around your finger..."

It might be violent, just an FYI.

So this...was the demon. Dante retreated to her chair, hands folded primly in her lap. So she was being allowed a glimpse of this power Walter had within him. Interesting.

"I take it that you are the other that exists within this body," Dante said, inclining her head in what could be seen as a gesture of respect. "A pleasure to meet you."

Was it her imagination, or could she feel the power coming off of him? This was something she was unfamiliar with.

"I'm a mother," was the only response she gave to the comments regarding her manipulation. Was the creature afraid she would usurp it's power over the boy's mind? She had no desire to do that. She was more than happy to share....

'Walter's' face didn't twitch, or hardly move except for his eyes, still watching her intently, finding so many things that didn't necessarily bother him, but he could pick out from his time amongst humans.

"Yes. I am Valtiel, Dante." He took a quick look over her, almost too quick for most to gain an ideal of her attentions. "You're wearing a light colour to make him comfortable, and to seem motherly. Also, the book is something inconspicuous to a child, or in Walter's case, someone who's suspicions will be banished soon after properly meeting, am I correct?"

"I mean Walter no harm," Dante said, smoothing her skirts. "I simply feel...drawn to him. Something about him tugs at my heartstrings." She shrugged. "And of course, I fear him being bullied and used by our peers. I imagine that this power you give him is something quite dangerous, and difficult for him to control. It would be a pity to see unnecessary damage come about because a child is frightened and confused and without anyone to turn to. Better to contain it until needed."

And there was truth in what Dante said. She saw no point to needless destruction or death. It was nothing but a waste.

"And to be perfectly honest with you, Lord Valtiel," she assumed 'Lord' was a proper way to address a demon of power greater than her own, "I miss having someone who depends on me and looks to me and needs me."

"I don't care if you do hurt him. Just keep in mind that we have something to complete, and after that's done, you can have him all to yourself." He noted, this time, an unamused look broke through his normally stoic-like face, "And I don't think you know who has those powers. He'd be useless to you without me."

As if on cue, the room began to change bak into his place. But if she left, it wouldn't follow. This damned place limited his powers too much to allow him full reign. He chuckled lightly, and said, "Depends? Needs? Funny, you smell like death from here, no matter how much you try to cover it up."

"It's merely this body." Dante shrugged. "It's held together by alchemy. It's rotting away, slowly. An annoyance, but nothing more. My mind and soul are untouched by it."

The room was twisting again. Dante shifted in her chair, but remained where she sat. Was this to be some showdown? A staring contest of powers? She didn't like how skewed things were in Walter's - Valtiel's? - favor. And there was nothing her alchemy could do against decay that sank into the very walls.

"I have little interest in whatever it is you're trying to do. I have no intention to interfere." She'd stay out of whatever business that was. She wasn't a fool, to try and argue with this demon or get in its way. Though she couldn't help but wonder if Walter would be truly useless without Valtiel. A vessel for such power needed to be strong, at least according to the rules she knew.

Either way, there were other uses for Walter if that were the case. "My interests are in the boy."

"It is like this one, then? Interesting..." He muttered, clearly curious now. Learning information, remembering it like a beloved late-time favourite old movie. every line, every theory that this could possibly hold for him... it was worth it.

"Same thing was said from the late Sect's Priest, Jimmy Stone. Would you like to know how he was killed?" Without waiting for an answer, a look of utter and complete glee spread across his face, making him look like some messed up Cheshire Cat in human form as he said, "A shot to the head, by the boy you were talking to moments before. "It's a long story." One Dante wasn't about to divulge to anyone. She had her reasons. "But yes, this body is...not technically mine. Though it may as well be, I share it with no one."

She listened in stony silence as this...thing that wore a human body described its kill. was it a threat? She wasn't so foolish to believe that she could escape death's clutches by doing nothing.

He wasn't some young child, and though those were the words that would normally please him, Valtiel wasn't about to throw his trust to this person... this thing as of yet, whom he felt didn't deserve it right now. "Just know that I'll be watching you.

And I was not lying when I told you of Stone's death." With that, the rings faded back into some untraceable colour within his eyes, and his entire frame seemed to recede into the deceptively frail figure that seemed to suck all of the disease and decay that the room contained into himself. The feelings of bitterness and hatred were gone from his aura.

As much as Dante hated the idea of being watched, monitored, pinned as she had pinned so many others... what choice did she have? This force, this Valtiel was more powerful than she was.

"Of course." She bowed her head in deference, having no other option. She would leave the demon to whatever it wanted. As long as she was allowed to continue her work on the boy.

The boy that seemed to have returned, as the morbid veil fell away and the strange sensations of anger and hate faded. She let out a breath she hadn't realized she'd been holding.
