Who: Dante and Light (Open)
Where: Emptiness
When: Afternoon, after Walter's arrival
Rating: PG-13 to be safe
Warnings: None at the moment!
Summary: Dante heads into town to look for supplies, accompanied by Light who wants to get out of the mansion for a bit.

Dante abhorred having to dress to cover the rotting skin on her body. High necked gowns, lace brushing her chin. Long sleeves that spilled lace over the backs of her hands. Hems down to her feet, swathing her as demurely as a nun. It certainly helped her image as a grieving, subdued woman, but...

It hid the beautiful body she'd stolen from that silly mining girl. She really would have to see about fixing that. And fixing a great deal of other things, as well.

At the moment, her mind was on her task. She didn't mind having Light come along with her. When he wasn't throwing his little tantrums, he was pleasant enough. He had a great deal of intelligence, and could do great things as long as he didn't allow his emotions to cloud his judgment. And at the very least, he could carry heavy things for her.

"Have you been to the town yet?" she inquired, casually.

He walked alongside the woman in a clash against her with his casual clothes and hands in pockets. He looked more relaxed in clothing than she....but didn't look completely relaxed himself, as if he were constantly on guard.

"No, I have yet to visit here just yet. I've hardly went outside Niflheim at all, actually. The farthest I've gone is where I dumped L at in the forest near Asgard."

"I haven't left the mansion much either." There was certainly enough to do there, enough to keep her busy. But the town seemed appealing. And she enjoyed the sensation of being alone in it, as empty as it was. It reminded her of home, and the city beneath Central that she called her own.

"It's quite an interesting place," she went on, conversationally. "And I've heard of wonders, beyond Nilfheim. Though I'm afraid I'm not built for terribly long walks."

A small lie. She could handle it well enough, she simply tended to lose more skin if she exerted herself terribly.

"I don't like to get my hands dirty, so I often don't go exploring on my own. I prefer leading from the shadows, so to say." Light replied.

"A bit of dirt beneath the fingernails does a soul good," Dante said, lightly. "How can you truly appreciate the fruits of your labor without something tangible to show for it? Or were you speaking metaphorically?"

She enjoyed her life of leisure, of course, but really. There were few things more satisfying than being able to look across the results of hard work, knowing that you had built it all up yourself. Besides, it was healthy to stay active.

"I meant metaphorically. I actually like physical things such as sports at times, but when it comes to unknown territory, I prefer to send out other people and find out about it through them..But..That won't really work well here. The people in Niflheim aren't exactly going to led me command any of them around..you know? It's pretty different from my world, where many would follow me without a second thought...and I mean Light, not Kira."

"I don't think many here are used to being followers," Dante responded, slowing to look into the windows of empty shops. "And yet no leaders have stepped forward, either. What an interesting group to come together. I do fear how we'll fare in these trials, if we continue to be so divided and disorganized." She shook her head.

"It seems far too many of our number are too absorbed in their own little plots and plans. And turning to attack one another?" She shook her head. She knew she could lead masses, but... she wasn't sure how one would even begin to try and organize the mismatched lot Hell had thrown together.

"Yes..even if I prefer being in control, I feel being leader of Niflheim wouldn't really be much control at all. The leader would probably just be a figurehead. I highly doubt we'll be able to get everyone to follow one of us." He glanced into the windows as well, not really finding anything interesting so far.

"Not even a figurehead," Dante pointed out. "A figurehead at the very least stands for something, fronts for something. Here, there's nothing to stand for or front for." And besides, figureheads had someone behind them. Dante couldn't think of anyone who seemed to be making moves even to lead from the shadows.

She didn't blame them, though.

"Those that can work together will simply be tasked with the brunt of these trials, I suppose."

"I do fear these trials, I'll admit. Those in Asgard may not be as strong as those in Niflheim...but they have more unity for sure."

Dante shrugged and moved into a shop, enjoying the eerie stillness. This was a dead place, right now. It was comforting.

"Does it truly matter who wins these trials?" she asked, eyes moving over the wares of what looked like it had been a hardware store. "I doubt either the Metatron or Lucifer would allow any of us to die in them, after all. Besides, who knows if we will need to work together for them? It's foolish to worry about them when we know so little."

"Well, the deal with Lucifer is if our side wins with my help, I get a new Death Note. So, yes, I want us to win." Light replied simply, following her into the shop and looking around a little.

"I believe that's something else the other side has over us," Dante mused, picking up a small trowel from a dusty shelf. "They are fighting for an ideal, for a cause, something greater than themselves. Those here - yourself included - are fighting for personal desires and gains. Those who fight for causes and ideals are more willing to give all they have. They're willing to risk their lives for it, because it hardly matters if they live or die, as long as their cause is triumphed. Those who fight for personal gain are less willing to do so - why risk your life, when you need your life to enjoy your prize?"

She had little faith in Lucifer's team. And only a small bit of faith in the other side, despite her words. Even if they were willing to give their lives for God and country, that didn't mean they were capable of accomplishing anything.

"I am fighting for a greater cause, though. Once I get that Death Note, I can continue my work as Kira and make the world a better place again." He replied. "The world was almost at peace before I died, I intend to change that 'almost' part."

Dante shook her head. "Would this 'cause' of yours continue, should you die? Or is it essential you preserve your own life to further it?" Noble ideals, certainly, the desire to bring peace to the world. Dante could understand that, and agree with it. But that wasn't the point she was trying to make.

"I have thought about that. Once I get the death note and get back to my world, I will make sure to choose followers that have the same ideals as I and will choose several that will carry on the name of Kira should I die." Light replied picking up some random mechanical object and tinkering with it.

Dante smiled. "But that still means you wouldn't give your life in these trials. Nor would I. Nor would many of our side, I imagine. We do have things to live for, and understand how futile it generally is to die for ideals. And yet... well, I've seen what zealots can do, when they care more about their beliefs in goodness and righteousness. They can be forces to be reckoned with."

"I have, thank you for asking." Dante turned and pressed the trowel into his hands, reaching for a small pronged utensil. "I do hope no one gets it in their mind to interfere with my gardening. I would be most displeased. I wonder...."

There was plenty of space in town. Perhaps....

"You don't have to garden at Niflheim or Asgard. Not that you'd have a garden in Asgard anyway.." He held the item in one hand while the other stayed in his pocket. "And maybe you might find something here to protect it."

"There is a great deal of empty space here," Dante mused, toying with the lace edges of one sleeve. "And I truly abhor having to share my own. I can barely concentrate, not to mention the ridiculous bed situation." She wondered what in the world was stopping her from making a vacation home of sorts in the town. It wasn't as though anyone was using it, after all.

"I don't worry too terribly over protecting it. But with Carrion's tower being vandalized by one of our own... I suppose I can't be too careful. Though why anyone would wish to destroy a garden full of flowers and trees, I've no idea."

"Many would wonder that in our world as well. Some of the destruction of wildlife seemed pointless, even with our increase in population and need for more homes." Light wandered around, looking at some more objects.

"Nature sustains the earth, or does where I come from. Not that that stops foolish men from stripping the forests and destroying mountains in the name of 'progress'." Progress! What did any of those short lived fools know about progress? They were going to run head first into their own destruction, regardless of her efforts.

"I believe I shall find a place for me here, where I can retire to when need be." And leave her garden out of the immediate reach of her 'teammates'.

"..It would be nice...To have a place away from everyone..." Light said..more to himself than Dante.

Of course, he didn't want to truly be alone...He had experienced that...and it wasn't a very good thing.

"Yes, I believe it will be." Dante had made up her mind. She wasn't going to move out of the mansion, but she would keep a small space here for herself. For whatever reason she needed it. And of course, her garden.

"The mind needs time to itself," she went on, running her fingers along dusty shelves. "To sift through the clutter and make sense of day to day life. I truly do abhor sharing my space."

"...Yeah....The mind does need that sometimes..." He replied, but sounded far-off, as if he were talking to some deep part of his own mind. He was staring at a mirror, eyes clouded over as if deep in thought.

She shrugged. "You'll sort yourself out in time." The young never truly knew anything. They believed they did, though. How did the saying go? Youth was wasted on the young?

Dante was inclined to believe. She enjoyed her own youth so much more, now that she was so old. She appreciated it.

"The mind does get so cluttered in youth, doesn't it?"

"I imagine you would be surprised." Dante leaned against the wall, looking out through a dingy window. "It doesn't matter what the thoughts are. They build and twist and muddle together and the mind can barely untangle them. True control over the mind comes with a great many years."

She'd had enough apprentices, enough young minds in her care to see it time and time again. The journey through age, from all knowing and immortal to realization that no human mind can truly know everything, and time and life were fleeting....

"Mirrors are in scarce supply in Hell."
