Who: Shinji and {OPEN}
When: After Lucifer mentions creating a sports/training area.
Where: At the sports/training area, Niflheim.
Rating: PG (will be changed if necessary)
Warnings: None as of yet
Summary: Shinji feels like killing time and attempting to relax and take his mind off of things.

After Lucifer had commented saying that he would 'make' a sports area for them and the surprise had subsided, Shinji had left his room in search of where this area might be. After finding it (and a basketball), he had entirely intended on shooting a few hoops with the primary aim of taking his mind off a number of things that were currently troubling him. Bouncing the ball against the ground several times, Shinji turned his attention towards the hoop, brown eyes studying it carefully. It wasn't that he didn't want to play (he did), it was that he couldn't seem to muster any energy. He supposed it could be that he didn't have anyone to play with, or, more likely, it was simply that standing in the middle of an empty court simply reminded him of who he used to play with, particularly Shuya. He wondered how 'Wild Seven' was doing - had done - the game was probably over by now, right? He hoped, that out of everyone, Shuya would have won. He was a good kid after all, but... He'd always been a bit spacey and even if Shinji would have liked for Shuya to have survived (out of all those left alive when he, himself, had died), he wasn't convinced it would have happened; he would have had Kiriyama and Kawada to contend with, after all.

After bouncing the ball a few more times, Shinji caught it and aimed at the hoop. It circled the rim a few times before dropping in. Screwing his nose up, Shinji shook his head and walked lazily after the ball to retrieve it. That should have been a straight goal. Being preoccupied wasn't a good sign. Picking the ball up, he spun it on the tip of his index finger, thinking. He still couldn't work out what he thought of the people he was on a team with; they seemed to be an eclectic bunch, which in and of itself didn't surprise him, but... He wasn't convinced there was anyone he'd become vaguely close. Having browsed the public network, his opinion of the other team was more or less similar, although they seemed to trusting, too willing to accept things without question. He wasn't convinced they were all fools however, and whatever game they might be playing, he still didn't think he would be inclined to like any of them that much. Perhaps he was just overly cynical. Whatever, that was just from the public network. He got the impression however, that attempting to hack would be a foolish idea, but it wasn't something he was going to mention to anyone. He half expected that if nothing of interest happened over the next few days, he'd see if there was anything hidden within the network.

He wondered what his Uncle would have said about the whole thing. He would have been disappointed, Shinji was sure, that his nephew was on the side of hell. He understood why there wasn't a neutral side, but it was a side in which Shinji would have fit so much more. Dropping the ball to the ground, he dribbled it, glancing up once at the hoop and shooting again. Perhaps he'd relax the more he played.

(ooc: I thought other people had posted to this...xD I'm sorry you were left hanging for a bit!)

Balam had been curious about the new training area himself. He was still in his usual attire - khaki pants, black vest, white oxford button down long-sleeved shirt... He hadn't bothered to hide his naturally firetruck red hair, but his sunglasses kept his bizarre eyes from view. His skin was a medium tan and his body was fit enough to fight someone without a weapon and win.

Balam was strong and he looked it.

But deep down was something he was trying to hide from most of the people in Niflheim. Balam had a conscience. He also had a heart. Balam even liked humans. Hell, he wanted to be a human - it was how he'd gotten into the mess that ended with his contract to Lucifer. His fate was sealed and he had no choice but to make sure Niflheim won. But...

Dr. Cox - as much of a bastard as he was, but Balam figured he was probably difficult to deal with himself - and this new kid, Shinji, interested him. He actually found himself kind of wanting to get to know them. Which was why, when Balam was rolling up his sleeves and taking a look around the training grounds, that his eyebrows raised in unison at the sight of the teenager. It had to be Shinji - no one else was that young in Niflheim, as far as he knew.

He was a little familiar with basketball by chance, but... He cleared his throat as he crossed the way to Shinji and gestured to the kid and then the ball. "Isn't that a group sport?"

((ooc: Aha, no worries!))

At the sound of someone speaking, Shinji paused, holding the ball with both hands and glancing at it. "Huh? Oh, I guess so, but... You can kinda play by yourself, but... Whatever the case, it's kinda hard to play in a group when you don't have a group", he responded, a slight smile making it's way onto his lips. Shrugging lightly, he idly passed the ball from hand to hand, studying the other curiously.

Having not been here long, it was ridiculous to expect that he'd be able to recognise anyone by face (and he wasn't sure that he'd even 'spoken' to half the people on the team, anyway), and he was vaguely certain that it would take him a while to remember either names or faces, let alone be able to put the two and two together. It had never been something he'd been good at. He supposed he was helped in some way by the fact that so many of the Niflheim inhabitants promised to be unique.

"Fancy a game?" He asked, holding the ball up in his left hand, before continuing to speak. "And, uh, sorry, who're you? I'm Shinji", he added, before trailing off, gesturing vaguely with his right hand. The whole 'introduction' thing was beginning to get annoying and he was sure those who'd been here longer than he had would be able to recognise the fact that he was new. Nevertheless, some form of manners couldn't hurt, right? Just because they were fighting for hell, it didn't mean that they had to be complete bastards, surely.

Balam blinked, frowned, and for a moment looked like he was just going to walk off from sudden, inexplicable irritation. It wasn't even anything the kid had said. Why didn't he think to introduce himself? It was simple...human behavior, anyway. Damn. He shrugged it off and grimaced. "Name's Balam. I sorta forget that people won't know my name," he said in a gruff apology. "Nice ta meetcha, kid." This was one of the few sane-seeming members of Niflheim. He at least wanted to try making a good impression.

"Sure, i'll try my hand at it. I ain't tried playin' it in a long...long time," Balam murmured the last part more to himself than Shinji, before his attention returned to the younger male.

Shinji regarded him curiously for a moment. To say that he found most of the people here slightly weird in terms of mannerisms, but he had, in his short time here, had come to figure it was somewhat expected. At the rather vague apology, Shinji grinned and shrugged. "Eh, probably something to do with my having just gotten here. Have you been here long?" He paused briefly, deciding that in terms of speaking about time, he definitely preferred speaking in Japanese. "I think it's gonna take me a while to remember people's names", he added, briefly glancing at the sky. At the moment, he was certain the only person he'd be able to recognise name and face-wise, would be Light, and that was for a number of reasons. Studying Balam again, he was hit by the thought that this guy probably wasn't all that easy to forget, either, though.

"Well, it'll be slightly more interesting than me playing by myself. Unless you had something else you needed to be doing". He glanced at Balam again. "Anyway, unless your aim is crap, I don't think you'll have much of a problem". Pride, and his own vaguely arrogant sense of humour stopped him from saying that in terms of size (both height and muscle), Balam would probably have him beat.

"Eh, a couple weeks? Half a month? Something like that anyway," Balam shrugged. It was hard to tell how long he'd been in this particular realm. This human seemed very different from the other Japanese one. This one seemed...smart, which was similar to Light, but more sane? Less delusional. He liked that.

He eyed the basketball before finally grinning. "Alright, let's see how it goes then." He walked closer to Shinji before pausing and glancing at the hoop, then Shinji, then the hoop again. In height, Balam had the advantage, but he was inexperienced with the sport. He figured Shinji was far more likely to 'win' in a game they played together.

Shinji nodded a murmured a vaguely non-committal response to show he'd been listening, and glanced at the ball for a few moments. "Y'know, this'd be easier if there was someone to start it off", he commented, referencing to the fact that there was no neutral party to start their admittedly mini game off. "D'you have a coin or anything we could use to decide who starts? Unless you're not bothered either way". It would be weird, he mused, to play against someone he wasn't remotely familiar with. Back home, if it were outside of a training session or practice, he'd play with or against another member of the team, and more often than not, that person would end up being Shuuya.

Bouncing the ball somewhat idly, he half-turned his attention to their surroundings as he waited for a response either way. "What brought you out here, anyway? Guessing it wasn't to play basketball", he asked, with a quick grin. Despite the entire situation of being here, it was, he decided, nice to have a relatively normal conversation with no apparent hints to the person you're conversing with being on the wrong side of the sanity scale.

((ooc: It's fine, it happens! xD And honestly, I'm suddenly wondering why I decided to have him play b-ball in the first place. My knowledge of it is non existent. /wikipedia time for terminology))

[ooc: Strange, it's like Balam's posts are getting eaten. I swear I posted to this before, yet it's not here...! Same thing happened with another thread. Also, as far as the b-ball goes, I guess we can just be vague about it. XD]

Balam shrugged. "I was curious to see the new part of Niflheim. It's...pretty extensive, from the looks of it," he noted. "Lucifer...likes to go all out, at least on some stuff. He can get a little twisted with the living arrangements, though, the prick," he mumbled. "But no, I dun have a coin...but you could go first," he said simply.
