Welcome to the Emptiness
Who: Jazz, L (Ryuzaki)
Where: Emptiness
When: After this but before Jazz and Strix start their little spy trip
Rating: PG-13 (at the moment)
Warning: none yet
Summary: Jazz goes out into the Emptiness to meet with Ryuzaki.

Preparations for his little project all gone through, Jazz leaves Niflheim for a trip to the ghost town. This place is fascinating to Jazz. A whole town, abandoned to the elements, just for the taking. It seems like paradise to him, like a place where his talents at hiding can be used to full extent.

In alt-mode he finds his way to the parking lot in front of Dungeon's Delight, a book shop that once upon a time catered to the more sci-fi and fantasy inclined readers. He will be the only car there. This might present a slight problem, but...

He metally shrugs. Humans as a whole tend to overlook their machines. That is a fact. And the one human he is here to meet does not know what his alt-mode looks like anyway.

Having found a comfortable place to wait for some time, he waits for Ryuzaki to arrive.

Following the coordinates on his journal, L made his way out of the forest after his meeting with Kain and arrived at the Emptiness. Standing in the parking lot, he glanced around, unsure where to go from there... there was one car in the parking lot, a shiny, impressive vehicle, but no sentient being seemed to be around. He walked towards the door of Dungeon's Delight, entering the old store and glancing around for anyone resembling Jazz's picture.

Jazz watches L enter the shop. For some minutes after L went through the door of Dungeon's Delight he lets his sensors scan the surrounding area to make double sure that they were alone.

Good. Nobody in the close enough vicinity to observe anything that goes on. Really good.

"Hey Ryuzaki! Why're your hiding in the shop?" he calls out, still in alt-mode.

L peered out the window before heading back outside, glancing around before realizing that the automobile was the only thing that could possibly have spoken.

"You're Jazz?" he inquired, sitting on the curb and resting his hands on his knees. This was fascinating... but foolish. If this two-ton vehicle turned out to be an enemy...

As an answer Jazz starts to transform. Slowly, for the maximal effect.

With a thousand clicks and whirrs his body unfolds and rearranges itself into his bipedal form. Of course, he cannot avoid his customary show of acrobatics while this goes on.

With move that looks more like something a breakdancer would do, Jazz lands in an elegant sprawl in front of L. There is a grin on his face.

"Hello darling. Did you miss me?"

L blinked. Then blinked again. That was... surprising.

"Darling?" he repeated, waiting for his brain to finish processing the thousand clicks and whirrs. "Um... nice to meet you. I'm Ryuzaki..." he shook his head, pinching the bridge of his nose. He was talking to a car... or what had been a car, a moment ago.

What is the Cybertronian equivalent of a brow goes up in Jazz' face, even though the human won't be able to see it for the visor hiding his eyes.

"Shocked?" Jazz askes. "I did tell you I was 'fucking huge'."

L stared up at the giant mecha, craning his head to see its equivalent of a face. "That's... one way to put it..." he said. He stared for a moment longer, inuring himself to the newness of the car/robot in his realm of experience. "I'm pleased to meet you, Jazz. Whenever you'd like to begin 'negotiations,' I'd be happy to commence."

Jazz ignores the second greeting he gets in this short a time. After all why should he react to such a thing when they already exchanged greetings long before they met in person. This is the way of his people, and until now he has gotten no information that humans do not follow the same rule in their interactions.

"Are you sure? Isn't it a bit fast?" He lies down on his side to make it easier for Ryuzaki to hold eye conatact with him. "You look a bit pale around the nose."

"Fast....?" L asked. "Um... no, I don't think so. That's why we're here, isn't it?" he took several hurried step backwards as Jazz lay down, unsure where to try to focus his eyes. He let them hover around where the voice seemed to come from.

"I look... pale?" L asked, retracing his steps and reaching towards the bridge of his nose again. "Ah... this..." he repeated the motion slowly, pinching the top of his nose. "Some people do this to relieve stress."

"We're here to talk, not to give you cardiac arrest." For a very short moment his visor retracts, letting Ryuzaki see his sparling pale blue eyes. He winks.

"I know," he replies. It amuses him how humans seem to zone in on the irrelevant details when they are... shocked would probably be the right word to describe him, he thinks. "The Prime does it when he gets annoyed."

Jazz shrugs.

"Of course, that happens to be more often than not right before he beheads you."

L narrowed his eyes slightly. One reference to cardiac arrest, and another to decapitation. Two mentions of death in the last minute or so. Could this creature be trusted...?

"Prime...? Your leader, I assume... interesting..." L said, making an effort to keep the conversation going. He was finding it difficult to relax when he was being addressed by something that could easily snap him like a toothpick if it so desired.

"If we're here to talk... let's talk. I want to kill Yagami Light. You know my side. Tell me yours."

"Yep. Optimus Prime, co-ruler of all Cybertron with his brother the Lord High Protector Megatron." His voice now goes to a near whisper, as if he does not like speaking of it.

"That is, before old Megs got the idea to start a war with the Prime. Now the two are nothing more than generals commanding two armies that try to obliterate each other." He is silent for a moment. "At least, I think they are still fighting. Could be that either Megatron or Prime are dead now and the war over." With an obvious act of will he shrugs off the strange mood.

"Either way, they are fighting or mourning each other now. And which side are you talking about? I don't have anything against terminating Light's spark."

L tilted his head to the side. "I want to kill a member of you team. You would have to have a reason, at least, for helping me. The way I see it, you've spoken to me once. You know why I want to kill Light, but you have no personal obligation to help. Sympathy or emotional appeals shouldn't work on you, as you're a machine. Light has not wronged you. So. I want to know why you would help me... or refrain from hindering me. It's strange, to me, why you would betray your side for no reason. Either you're trying to kill me, capture me, or there's an option you're aware of that I'm not. I strongly doubt that your ulterior motive was to give me a working knowledge of your world."

"Why would you think emotional appeals won't work on me? I'm as alive as you. I have the same feeling you do, though I come to think that we don't share the same interpretations of them. We love. We hate. We bleed and we 'birth'." He really should not get angry. He is surprized that is happens so fast.

"I am not a machine!" He sighs, a slow cooling intake of air into his body. He is calm, collected. Definitely not the kind of angry that one of his comrades once dubbed the 'hot ice of death'. Nope, definitely not that kind.

He has no wish to harm his human.

"Maybe I just need someone to talk." Jazz feels the words slipping from his grasp, leaving him in a void filled with metaphor.

"I am I, Don Quixote. The lord of La Macha..." he softly sings.

L stared. The robot was claiming to be a delusional old man living a life of blissful escapism? "All... right, then...." he said slowly, unsure how to handle this. Did robots have nervous breakdowns? Surely... surely, this robot knew that he was a robot. "Sorry. It was just a deduction I reached through my prior experience with..." he stopped himself from saying "macines." "...with non-organic complexes."

L crouched, setting his hands atop his knees and sighing. If Jazz had wanted someone to talk, he surely could have done better than the introverted "Ryuzaki." He wasn't a psychotherapist. He didn't understand feelings very well, much less how to control them. But it looked like "The Don" just needed someone... to believe him.

"Now you think I have a glitch in my CPU, eh?" He cannot help but chuckle. "Don't be surprized if I sometimes quote music or films. That's how we learned your languages. That and google."

His gaze goes skyward, through what can be seen by a human eye and into the starlit darkness. Somewhere out there is his home, his nice and clean apartment in the towers of the temple district. Somewhere out there is what remains of a great empire, decayed rubble strewn between the planets. Parsecs away...

"Parsecs away, that is where my house stands. My apartment was in the top floor. As far above ground as can be achieved by an earth-bound like me. I always liked the height. The wind smelled of lost dreams and forgotten promises.

"It was right in the thick of the temple district. Some days you could see more spark-seekers than anything else in the streets. It was nice, living there. Fun.

"The towers were one of the first things Megatron declared were against his rules. Back then, Optimus still listened to his brother's advice.

"Some days I think he should have never stopped doing that. Our empire would still be intact. The Cube would not have been lost.

"I never chose to fight for the Prime. One day I just got the order to walk inside a Decepticon fortress and get some important data. I can't remember what it was."

Somehow, Jazz thinks, I am making the human fear me more than I make him understand.

Somewhere inside him a tiny voice screams at him to stop.

Now he looks back at Ryuzaki.

"I never had what humans define as a conscience. I don't care if someone lives or dies as long as they do not belong to what is mine. It never mattered which side they were on. It doesn't matter now."

Slowly, L nodded. "All right... if you say so." he felt incredibly small, sitting next to Jazz, but not like he'd lost control of the situation. He thought about what Jazz wanted to know... conscience. Again, he wasn't the best person to ask that of. "Conscience... I think that we're similar in that regard. I never felt that I possessed one," L admitted, biting his fingertip. It would have been a good time to light a cigarette, but L didn't smoke. Or to eat candy, but he was down to his last two lifesavers and a sense of panic was beginning to grip him because of the shortage. He had a bitch of an oral fixation.

And maybe that's why, for no explainable reason, his mother entered his mind. He moved his hand slightly, replacing the finger in his mouth with his thumb and staring blankly at the parts of the robot that were the most car-like.

Ryuzaki is sucking on his thumb. Strange, Jazz thinks. What could have the human regress back into a very young stage?

"Is that a habit of yours?" comes his question. His hand reaches out to touch Ryuzaki's face, to let one finger trace around it. "Did I hurt you?"

L flinched, startled, throwing his arms protectively over his head. Peering up at the huge mecha, he slowly relaxed, aware that he must appear very strange. Certainly not a typical example of the human condition.

"No... no, you didn't hurt me..." he sad quietly. "I just wasn't expecting it... and I guess it's a habit. Something I'm not even usually aware of."

"Some habits are difficult to break of."

While speaking these words Jazz forms an avatar, letting the holo-matter seep out of its compartment and into the shape of a young human. He makes doubly sure that is does not take the form he configured for his mission.

"Does that make it easier?" comes in Jazz' voice from the mouth of the hologram.

Jazz feels the touch on the avatar. In a humble way the body shrugs its shoulders, as if he is not really comfortable with the topic.

"It's simple holo-matter. I believe one of your writers called it 'hard light'. We all can create them to a certain degree. Some are better with it than others."

A thin hand is raised and as if to be an aid to his explanation, first goes see-through and than back to normal.

"It makes the disguise more realistic."

"I see...." L said, staring hard at the hand. Part of him wished that he could don a disguise like this every now and then. He'd probably be a few inches taller, blond, with green eyes and a surfer-type body... or something like that. Whatever Misa thought was sexy. "It's a very realistic disguise," he agreed, lowering his own hand but continuing to stare.

Just then, L's journal flickered and beeped from inside his blazer. He brought it out, staring hard at it. "Please excuse me," he said in a low voice, "but Light Yagami is asking for it. I will undoubtedly see you again, Jazz... please keep in touch." he placed his hand on Jazz's holographic shoulder, tentatively, as though afraid of what might happen, before bowing slightly and turning to leave.

Jazz can only look after Ryuzaki when the human goes. He allows the avatar to relinquish it's form, the glittering fluid returning inside his armour. With slow moves he stands up from the ground, shaking his head and not sure if he should be amused or outraged.

What the SLAG! happened here a moment ago? he askes himself. The reactions of Ryuzaki were strange, controlled in a way that goes against all conscious control. It was as if...

He shakes his head. It doesn't matter now.

Jazz turns back to Niflheim and leaves Dungeon's Delight a silent prop for a cancelled blockbuster, a relic of a time that never was.
