A question about meta knowledge for the MOD
Okay, so my character comes from modern earth, and is very hip with new subcultures and such, it's the only thing keeping her 2,000 year old self sane. So presumably my character reads books and goes to the movies and has an interest in manga and plays World of Warcraft. So does she know that some of these people are from stories? Does she recognize that fact? Or is that sort of meta level recognition not allowed?

AND, if it is, is she allowed to use that information if she's happened to have read that book/seen that movie in particular?

I am thinking specifically of Scrubs, Transformers, and Death Note here. If my person tells another person that they're a character in a book she read, how is that going to pan out?

*is confused*

How should I address this?

I've wondered about this myself.

Not a mod, but just chiming in: My personal approach to this (though I'd dealt with it mostly in crossover fic) is to pretend my character comes from an Earth which didn't have whatever fiction the other characters are in, just because otherwise it gets weird. But it's up to the mods of course; I'm very curious.

Frank wouldn't have read Death Note anyway, for timing and personality reasons, and Transformers the movie came out after he left too. But maybe he could have seen Scrubs. I think he'd be very weirded out if someone told him he was a video game character though, and if they played the second game that his son was in and told him about that he'd go crazy. But that's more due to the nature of that game.

But again, I'm just rambling, not answering the question. ^^

Also not a mod, but just chiming in with my experiences. :D

That's how it's been handled in every other game I've been in, with the exception of if a character has showed canon knowledge of something in whatever it is they're from. Like in one multi-fandom game, I play Lyta from Babylon 5. We have a large cast of Buffy: the Vampire Slayer characters, including Anya, who we know in canon has watched the show. So for her to recognize Lyta as a fictional TV character is okay.

Otherwise, yeah, it can get really weird and bizarre - and just speaking from personal experience, it throw players for a loop, too.

I agree with both the above comments.

But, if you really wanted to throw the character through a loop, you could always ask the mun, and if the mun and the mod agree, you can go ahead and say "Heeyyyy, didn't I see you in ______ show???"

Some people will agree, some wouldn't.

I'd say pretend they haven't, because...

If you know their weaknesses/etc. from the information on those characters, that's not fair for those players! So unless the character has SPECIFICALLY watched the show in canon, like...the example Henry's player mentioned? I'd rather everyone pretend they're unfamiliar.

Mistakes happen, of course, but let's try to smooth out these wrinkles. =3

That's quite alright with me. My character doesn't have a canon, since she's from a mythological background.

So Jazz should avoid quoting famous films and comic books or musicals? I ask because he has done that already and now I feel that I've done something wrong.

No, you haven't done anything wrong. I think it's okay to reference famous films, comic books or musicals...IF it's typical of your character, BUT.

When it comes to actually 'recognizing' characters and their strengths/weaknesses/stories, etc...that just won't happen. Does that make sense? You might quote something from the Scarlet Pimpernel, but if the Scarlet Pimpernel was actually in the game, you wouldn't 'recognize' them. And if a subject is asked about, try to be vague about character quotations and whatnot?

It's a little confusing, but that's the best way I can think of it right now. Feel free to ask more, or offer suggestions (you or anyone else.)

I know that this part was resolved, I just wanted to add that I enjoyed reading Strix's impressions on the characters. XD And now that I'm off topic, I go do more real posting now. n_n
