Some Notes from the Mod I’ve noticed that a lot of people have been having their characters express boredom. Unless this is particularly, expressly part of your character’s personality, why not communicate with players and ensure they aren’t bored? Check what’s been going on, have your characters react to what they can find out. Poke other characters with yours and see what happens.
Part of the problem might be because your character really has nothing to do – this is because you might’ve accidentally cornered your character. When this happens because your character hasn’t bonded enough with others or really does have nothing to do, reach out to the other characters and converse. Try poking other players and seeing if anything might be able to happen – haven’t really done much with a certain other character? All the more reason to try interacting to see what occurs! I’ve seen that sometimes this isn’t for lack of trying, but because people don’t know when to ask more about other characters. Don’t try to make your character understood all the time – let misunderstandings happen on occasion if it’s natural. But more importantly, if your character is supposed to have an interest in finding out about others, have them try to find out more rather than telling the other person THEIR life story. This could do wonders and open up new things to explore with your character.
Another thing that I’ve been noticing is that a lot of people seem to be forgetting what side their characters are on. With exception of Balam and Yako, everybody in Niflheim comes from an evil or villainous background according to the applications I’ve received. Even Balam technically does, and that is why he actually will carry out any orders given to him by Lucifer no matter how much he might or might not want to. If your character is in Niflheim, please remember that they’re on THAT side and aren’t there just to make friends with Asgardians. If your character worked for bad guys before, they should be used to doing jobs they might not even enjoy. Don't send in applications for characters who are going to enter Niflheim and then complain about the unfair circumstances or how much they want to escape. It defeats the purpose of an evil team. Why would you apply for Niflheim if you weren’t willing to have your character actually work for the bad guys? This is misleading and generally frowned upon in this game.
If your character isn’t going to, then there’s no point in Lucifer keeping the character on his team – which means that there is a high chance that he will kill them, if not drag them through a portal away from the realm. Which he can do – it’s been in the rules since day one as a warning note. Testing the waters by trying to have your Niflheimer be good is dangerous. (This includes the trials if your character is going to blatantly not try to win - which should be discussed with me before you make this decision, as the trials are a critical aspect of the game.) There are so many Asgardians to begin with and so few Niflheimers, some of whom aren’t really willing to go and be evil. This isn’t an angry lecture by any means – this is simply an attempt at a polite knock on the door to alert people to what is going on and encourage that people not do it.
If your character genuinely has doubts, there’re ways to do it well – again, as an example, Balam isn’t running around doing tons of evil, but if Lucifer gave him an order, he would have to do it. But he also isn’t going around begging people to understand him or make friends with him. He’s not deliberately calling attention to anyone that he’s somewhere he shouldn’t be – because that would likely get him killed by his other teammates if not Lucifer himself. The only reason Balam is safe from being killed by Lucifer is because Lucifer basically owns the guy and he HAS to do anything Lucifer says. But please, people, unless it absolutely is part of your character’s background, don’t play the ‘I might be on the wrong side’ card.
Also, please remember if you have a character in Niflheim that Lucifer is a jerk and he won’t necessarily give your character a job they’d enjoy doing – and if they refuse to carry it out (which is fine), then they will be punished. There’re consequences for what characters do – but there’s also the promise of character development regardless of what choices are made. If your character does it, then how will they feel about it? What’ll it mean for them and the character they torment? If they don’t do it, what’ll happen…? Though never doing anything he asks is a serious risk, again, because then there’s no reason for Lucifer to keep them there.
If anyone finds themselves writing a Niflheimer and they simply don’t want to anymore, there is nothing wrong with dropping a character as long as you talk to the mod about it. If you really can’t write an evil character, it’s better to drop a character than to stress about it or write one that really shouldn’t be there. It’s not enjoyable for most if a typically villainous, problematic character is suddenly running around making friends and acting in a way that makes little sense, particularly when the player's reasoning for their character's odd behavior doesn't hold any merit.
TL;DR: If your character is evil, let them be evil. If you aren’t sure what to do with your characters, talk to people. Post on the board. Try interacting with characters you haven’t interacted with much and explore opportunities. And I’m sure everyone else will be eager to help you do more with your character in this game.
This is not directed towards any player in particular, or any character in particular. This is an overall notice because of a worrisome trend I, the secretary, and the shadow queen have been noticing. D=
