Who: Peter and Star
What: Phone call
When: The night of Macha's kidnapping

He leaned against the door to Shiloh's room. This was not something he wanted to do, not so soon after she'd regained her freedom. But it would have been done anyway, and it needed to happen now.

Cell phone. Her number was still (again? he couldn't remember) in the phone's memory. A push of a button, and a deep breath as the phone rang.

Clients she let go straight to voice mail. She almost didn't recognize the number, and answered just barely in time.

"Peter?"

"Hey, there." He was tired. He sounded tired, more to the point. "I need your help."

Star sat up a little, frowning. This didn't sound good. "What's wrong?"

Quietly, "Macha's been kidnapped. We don't know... she and Danu are twins in this life. So we don't know who they intended to take. And I need to know as much as you can tell me..."

"She's been..."

Star pushed a hand through her hair. It came down to cover her mouth, nibblng at her nails. The shakes came a couple seconds later, by surprise attack.

And then she was curled up on the bed and she wanted David and the phone was on the other side of the room on the floor and she wasn't quite sure how it had gotten there.

Okay. Maybe she wasn't as recovered as she'd thought.

"Star? STAR," he shouted through the phone.

He was going to have to leave the house, wasn't he. Well, if Dagda killed him later he might have the comfort of saying it had been his call.

Slowly, very carefully, she tiptoed her way across the room and picked up the phone (that actualy looked like it had been thrown across the room before).

"I'm sorry, Peter," she said, making her voice very, very calm. "I'm not sure I can help."

Equally calm, eyes closed tight, "Do you want me to come over?" Voice soothing, gentle, speaking of calm and safety and protecting her.

Her first instinct had been to reach for David. But David was at work. As careful as she was being with every word and gesture right now, she decided not to say that. In fact, she wouldn't say much of anything except, "Yes, please."

"Give me... twenty minutes. Depending on traffic." And how many traffic laws he managed to break getting there. "I'll be there as soon as I can."

He went back into the kitchen after a moment, only his eyes showing the strain. "I need to do this in person. If she... is capable of remembering it." Without breaking down. He decided not to tell them how long she'd been gone. "Take good care of each other. I will call when I know anything more." He hugged Shiloh tight, kissing the top of her head.

And then to the TV room, where he gently shook Nick awake. Low and urgent, "Help Carole keep an eye on Shiloh. I'll be back as soon as I can."

He'd broken a number of laws to get over here in the first place. Which, at least, meant that he had a slightly better idea of how best to get to Star's.

It was maybe fifteen minutes before he buzzed her apartment.

It probably would have helped, she realized, as the minutes ticked by and he didn't appear, if she'd told him she was at David's.

Or maybe he was kidnapped too.

That thought had her scrambling for the cell phone again.

He picked up immediately, a faint note of alarm in his phone. "Star? Where are you?"

Of course he hadn't thought she might have been kidnapped again. Or shaking with fear and worry and unable to come downstairs. Or, or, or...

Lucky that northwest D.C. was packed close together. He buzzed David's apartment.

"It's me." Because he expected her to be that paranoid, still. Perhaps always, now.

She was. And she was also looking through the peephole. And trying to extend her senses somehow to just make sure it was him by, oh, hell, telepathic contact.

After a moment and a deep breath, she opened the door.

"Hey."

"Hey." He stepped in, let the door close and lock before holding her. Safe and warm and yes, maybe he needed the physical contact a little bit right now, too.

Maybe a lot bit. He tried to put that out of his mind, because he was here for her.

She needed it too. More than she wanted to admit. More than she wanted to let herself, considering. But she still shivered, and she still clung to him, and rather than allow herself to start something that couldn't possibly end well she turned her head slightly and kissed the curve of his jaw.

"Kidnapped?" she asked, quietly, in a whisper, before she could ... pull to pieces any further.

He nodded, slowly, burying himself in her shoulder, the scent of her hair, rather than let himself respond to that kiss.

"She was to meet her sister on the Metro after sparring lessons with the Morrigan. Didn't make it. Nobody's seen anything, but I hope... Badb and the Morrigan should be able to get a sense of where she is. How she is."

The anger and fear and contemplation of things to do to whoever had done this crept into his voice.

She nodded a little, shifting in his embrace barely at all, but enough that she was now holding him as much as he was holding her. She remembered this, the sound of his voice, the way he held onto her.

Just that helped, a little. Gave her something to focus on besides memories.

"They took me in my own home... that seems more risky, on the Metro." Practicalities. Think practical.

She held him tightly even when she was trembling.

He smiled a little, remembering how this went, hands soothing down her arms and back.

"For both sides, yes. Though you try telling a war goddess who's been awake since very early in her life what she can and can't do." Dry amusement in his voice.

"I should..." he dug out his cell phone, barely shifting them at all. "Before my brother-dearest goes back there and starts fretting," his tone laced with perhaps more acid than he intended for even Star to hear.

"Ali? It's me. Carole and Nick are both in the kitchen with Danu, but I had to leave to get some information." His nose wrinkled at the audible "what?!" on the other end of the line. "Good. Ishtar was kidnapped a few weeks ago. I'm with her to learn whatever I can. What do we know?" He stiffened, voice going grim and dark. "We'll find her. If we have to send Morrigan and Badb through people to get her, we will."

Deep breaths, one hand still unconsciously tracing over Star's back. And then a very definite wince. "I expect it's something to do with who she is. If you're headed back over... I don't know. Try and get her to sleep. Tell her Macha's still in the city and we'll deal with how to tell her tomorrow. Preferably with a good head start."

A pause. "Yes. Thank some deity, somewhere. I should really get back to things here... You as well."

"How many people do you think go running around trying to catch deities?" he asked wryly. "I might count it as coincidence if the Morrigan hadn't been in a bad car accident at the same time Macha was taken. One she shouldn't have walked away from."

Not that he would have, really, paranoid as he was. But the consideration would have been more pronounced, otherwise.

"I don't think they were trying to catch me... not Ishtar, that is." She said it quietly, as steadily as she could. "I think they were trying to get me out of the way, as a commodity. As a woman who could disappear into a ... a slave ring, the sort of crime that people don't think exists anymore. They never once did anything that... that indicated they were aware I was anything other than..."

He couldn't stop the low growl in his throat at that.

"That puts a new twist on things." His fingers brushed through her hair, quiet and calm. "All our indications, our instincts, say that someone has an idea of what they're doing. Who they're after. Perhaps a very general idea, but all the same."

He gave her a grim little smile. "When you're ready to talk about it, I am more than willing to listen." And see if I can't find them and tear their throats out. "I was a champion of the Tuatha de Danaan, once."

Her mouth twisted in something that might have been an answering smile but probably wasn't. "Maybe it was someone's idea of tragic irony. Of... of putting me in my place. Or making it dirty, what I was."

Ishtar might not like that idea any more than Star did, really. "Maybe..." She looked down. "I don't know."

"It's not. Wasn't. Won't be," he answered her unspoken need for reassurance. "You take joy and pleasure in it. Don't let four hundred years of Puritan morality undo four millennia of delightful indecency." That was definitely both Peter and Ogma, there.

He nodded. Didn't push. "Shall I tell you what I know and you tell me if any of it matches?" Because he did... need some of this information. If she was willing to give it.

She smiled, with a shade of her old wry humor there. "It was perfectly decent, among my people." And that was certainly Ishtar talking. "It was..."

But she looked down at her hands, couldn't find words, and melted back into Star.

"That might be best," she nodded after a moment. He could tell just by her reactions most likely if any of it sounded familiar, and she wouldn't dredge up memories if she didn't have to.

"Is," he replied firmly. "Especially considering that a not-quite-16 year old Danu seems to have designs on me." He supposed he could sacrifice dignity if it got Star to laugh.

He outlined it for her. "Macha and Danu are twin sisters in this life. Macha takes martial arts lessons from the Morrigan, who's a student at one of the universities here - Georgetown, I think. She was on her way to meet Danu at the Metro stop after a lesson and never showed up. There are no signs of struggle that we know of, not surprising in public - my guess would be that they drugged her." Deep breath. "Apparently - I wasn't there for this - Morrigan and Badb tried to sense her through their link. Badb thinks she's still in the city. Alive, in pain, in the dark."

"We know it's possible they wanted Danu instead. We know it was a very short timeframe for them to be operating on, so they must have known her schedule fairly well. Or been desperate. We know she would never run away without telling Danu." He tried to remember if there was anything else. "I think that's everything. It's only been a few hours that she went missing, so far."

Almost none of it, really, sounded familiar. Yes, there was a shudder at the idea of being alive, in pain, in the dark. But she had been moved out of the city almost immediately. She hadn't been..

... Well, no, a few hours. It didn't sound familiar, but she frowned. "If it's only been a few hours..." Alive, in the dark. "If..."

She had to take a breath and steel herself for this.

"If it is the same people who took me, I would look in storage containers. Freight companies."

"I don't know..." she shook her head slightly. "We were only outside long enough to be moved into a van. Someplace... warmer."

She was starting to shake a little, but she closed her eyes, trying to remember the sounds, the smells of the dockyard.

"It was... not quite tropical. But close. Not very large, not a very.. industrialized area? Maybe an island or, or something. They didn't keep us outside very long. They said..."

And then she gulped, and closed her eyes tighter and tried to forget what they had said.

He tugged her into his arms wordlessly, fingers through her hair. As there and solid and protective as he could make himself. And trying hard not to growl silently over the people who'd done this to her. All his people were falling apart and this was not acceptable.

Her fingers curled into his shirt as she clung to him, shaking, possibly she was crying a little but if so she didn't allow herself to realize it.

At least they weren't doing this over the phone. It was easier, now, with him here and if nothing else his presence and his arms around her anchored her to the present.

He held her, murmuring nonsense in Gaelic. She'd needed this, even if she hadn't realized it, he thought.

Which was exactly why he'd come over, even if he still worried about Danu when he wasn't there. Sadly, none of Ogma's powers involved time travel or teleportation.

She shook her head. "When ... I sort of woke up in Miami, I must have been sleepwalking or something. I opened my eyes and I was on a street in Miami. I was trying to access funds to get back here when I ran into Michael... that was his name. And he looked so much like Seth both David and I almost killed him on sight." Or tried to. He looked almost amused at that. "So I should make sure that if I see someone who looks like Seth, that he's doing something appropriately psychotic and anti-social before attacking him?" The poor guy was going to have multiple bruises if word didn't get out and he stayed in D.C.
