Who: Donnie and OPEN
Where: Hot Topic
When: Monday afternoon

Donnie yawned and shifted the phone against his ear, waiting for the person on the other end to find the papers she was looking for. They were supposed to have a delivery, only the delivery hadn't turned up and chasing it up so that the date and time could be rescheduled was not something he'd really wanted to do. Why did these things always happen on a Monday?

He felt shitty. He'd felt shitty for the past few days, really. Galen's weird boyfriend had fucked up his trip, and with Rachel being pissed at him, it didn't make the comedown any better. Donnie had been off over the weekend, but now he was back at work and that made the shittiness rolling about in his gut ten times worse than it had been before.

Saturday night was haunting him too. He'd felt something, a genuine spark of...something with Galen. Rach had said he was probably love-drunk off the X, but it felt like more than that. It felt like something had clicked into place.

What though, Donnie didn't know. Maybe he'd just met somebody cool. It seemed to be the only thing that made sense...

"...hello? Hello, is someone there?"

Donnie blinked and returned to the land of the living. "Uh yeah, I'm here, sorry."

Sifting through the think pile of invoices, he scribbled a number down, nodding at the voice on the phone as he made a note of the new delivery date in the calendar. Joy.

Galen didn't know if he should say anything to Donnie or not. Hell, he didn't even know if the fact that he was pacing outside Hot Topic was sane or not.

Probably not?

Pasi had gone quiet, angry with Galen's attachment to Val, and his making up with his lover. Which was probably why he was here too. To make it up to Pasi. Why couldn't they just be of like mind?

Finally he walked in, and looked at the nearest person with a Hot Topic tag.

"Is...Donnie working?"

The kid looked over at Galen and blinked. "Yeah, he's over here." He put the t-shirts he was sorting down and headed over to the counter with Galen following behind him.

Donnie was stood at the counter, a pen in his hand. The work rota was out in front of him, although it wasn't the rota he was looking at. In fact, he wasn't looking at anything, although he was having a very nice dream...

Carl hit his hand on the counter top. "Someone here for you, Donnie," the kid said, moving behind the counter to serve a couple of teenagers who'd been waiting.

Donnie woke with a start. He rubbed his eyes, smudging his makeup a little, and stared at Galen blankly for a few moments. Then the light switched itself on and he smiled.

"Hey man," he yawned.

"Sorry...didn't mean to bother you." Galen stuffed his hands into his pocket before he glanced around the store. "Could we maybe talk? I mean...I just wanted to explain something and that's all. If you don't have the time you really don't have to worry about, I just wanted you to know...and..." He was rambling, quickly again.

Hanging his head, he dug a toe into the floor and sighed. "Whichever works for you."

Donnie blinked, several times, his brain trying to keep up with Galen's apologetic blabbering. It didn't do very well.

When he caught up, Donnie gave a shrug and yawned again, smudging a little more of his makeup. "I can talk," he said with a shrug. "S'not like I have a superior or anything."

Wiping eyeliner-smeared fingers on his jacket, Donnie folded his arms over his chest and waited for whatever Galen had to tell him.

"Uh...Somewhere....private?" He didn't want to do all this out in public. Mostly because he was afraid of Val wandering by. As stupid as that might have been. "I mean...Some of this you might not...want people to hear."

Licking his lips a little, he smiled sheepishly. "Please?"

Private? Donnie scratched his ear. He wasn't sure why Galen needed to say something in private...unless he was talking about drugs or something. Hmm...maybe it would be a good idea not to talk out on the shop floor.

"Okay."

He looked at Carl, who was trying to make a dice out of a piece of bluetack. Shrugging, mostly to himself, Donnie led Galen to the back of the store and through a door marked 'staff only', locked from the outside. Two other floor assistants, a girl and a guy, looked up at Donnie as he led the stranger through the store room and out the back, onto the loading bay. Further up, the last smoke-breaker was heading back inside. Lucky.

Donnie shut the door behind him and stuffed his hands in his pockets. "So...what is it, man?"

"I'm sorry about Val. I should have warned you...its just..." Galen shrugged, running a hand through his hair as he stared off into the distance. "He doesn't like most of my friends." Read: none of them. "He down right hates a lot of them, actually. I shouldn't have put you in that position without warning you."

But then telling people 'hey, my psycho boyfriend like...will try to kill you if I talk to you' never made anyone friends.

"That's why I split, really. Val doesn't control his temper well, and...It is just better not to push it all. And I'm really sorry, and I just wanted you to know that because I don't think there will be anymore hanging after this..."

Ug. He was getting all...emo wasn't he? Looking like a beaten puppy who was saying goodbye and didn't want to. Why did he have to be such a girl around other guys?!

PASI!

It isn't my fault...You were always a little emotional.

Donnie rested his back against the door as Galen spoke, frowning softly. This was weird. Val didn't like Galen's friends? Excluding himself, he didn't see how someone could put up with a girlfriend...boyfriend...whatever who didn't like their friends. What ever happened to bros before hoes? Or bros before man-hoes? Same principle.

The rest of what Galen said made his frown deepen. There was something about Galen's boyfriend that had made him feel weird. Lots of people didn't like to be hugged by X-riding strangers, but the way the guy had soured...there was just something about him that was very, very off.

And there was something about Galen that made the idea of them not hanging out together...suck. Really, really badly. He didn't even know the guy, but there was that feeling there, that connection. He wanted to know why he felt so close to a near-stranger...and now he couldn't.

"So what you're saying is...we can't hang out because your boyfriend hates your friends?" Donnie looked at the floor and brushed his hand through his hair. "That isn't...that kinda sucks. Is he jealous or something? Because I have a girlfriend..."

"I wouldn't want you to get hurt..." Galen shrugged, looking away as he thought about everything. "It isn't the sort of thing your thinking, either. Val doesn't like anyone...Girlfriend or not, stealing my time. He thinks I'm going to just leave someday..."

And go where, Galen couldn't imagine. It didn't help that Pasi and Val did not like each other at all it seemed.

"It is complicated, I'm sorry for dragging you into it. Besides...I'm not the sanest person anyway. I have these days I don't even remember things, and another person in my head that likes to dress me up in pink...." He sighed, "I'm just complicated in general. No one except Val has ever stuck around."

Hurt? As in physically hurt? Dude, Gale's boyfriend hurt people for talking to him? That was fucked up. Why the hell would anyone deal with that? "Couldn't blame you if you did, man."

Maybe he was too scared. If this Val guy was violent with Galen's friends, what was to stop the guy turning on Galen. The dude was small enough...

Looking up, Donnie shrugged. "Seem okay to me. My girlfriend dresses me up sometimes, for art projects. S'not that uncommon." Except Galen had just said the woman was in his head, right? "Besides, you're pretty cool, man. X strips away all the bullshit in your life and makes you see things as they are. You're cool."

There was a sort of ironic wisdom in those world.

"You say that now..." Galen muttered, looking at Donnie slowly. Poor guy. He didn't have a clue. "But thanks..."

As for the leaving, Galen just sort of shrugged. "I'm not sure I want to leave him, you know? I..." He frowned and found a patch of wall the lean on. "I don't know, but...sometimes I think I love him. Sometimes I think I'm just there until something better comes along. But either way...I wouldn't have anywhere to go if I did leave. Doesn't matter."

He was completely dependent on Val, really.

There was an uncomfortable spike of jealousy when Galen mentioned love. Donnie didn't want Gale to love that guy, that guy was a jerk. There was something nasty about Val, and if he added what Galen had already mentioned, that made him violent and possessive too. He could do better than Val.

...although why Donnie was thinking that, he didn't know.

"Sure you would, man. You could crash on our couch." The words fell out of his mouth before he had time to think about them. "Rach would understand, as long as you didn't tell her what you thought of her art. She gets really funny about her art, especially if you're not an artist."

"...I used to do art..." He frowned then, looking down and a bit sad as if something unpleasant came to mind. "I don't know...Leaving seems like an impossible thing. I think I would miss him."

He would, wouldn't he?

"But thanks...again." He smiled at Donnie.

"Maybe she'd like your opinion after all," Donnie yawned. He really could've gone for a nap right then and there...

But that little green monster spiked again in his stomach, forcing him to straighten up as he watched Galen. "People leave stuff behind that they miss all the time."

Did he just say that? Donnie blinked.

"Uh...no problem, man."

"I can't anymore...I..." He shrugged. Forgetting how to do the one thing he'd always wanted to do had been hard. Really hard.

"Anyway, thanks for the offer. Uh..." he pulled out a pen and took Donnie's hand to jot down a number before dropping the man's hand and twiddling the pen. "That's my mobile if you need to ring me up. And um, I really am sorry. Val wanted me to invite you and your girlfriend out to the house for dinner...So...if you want to, you can. But...I don't know, its up to you."

He bounced a little, scrubbing a hand through his hair before sighing. "I should go now."

He couldn't what? Donnie was about to ask when...when...

-she was a brunette, like Rachel. He could hear her laughter echo in the dark-

...Galen had ahold of his hand. There was a number on it. Then the man let go and put his pen away, talking about dinner and Rachel and...something. Donnie just stared. "Yeah, okay," he complied, half not there.

"Yeah. I uh...I should get back to work..."

Had that been a dream?

He was tired, but not that tired...or was he? Galen had held his hand for a few seconds at most, he couldn't have fallen asleep and had a dream in that short space of time...could he?

Donnie blinked. "Okay, see you..."

Moving to the door, he glanced at Galen once more, then headed back inside. He headed back to the shop floor, studying the number on his hand. He felt better for having it.
