Why am I the witness? OTA
Mark doesn't usually do too well in the sun - he's just too pale. So he's sitting in Mixed Leaves with an iced tea and trying not to wilt. Summer's not his favourite season by far. It beats the Fall, but not by much. He's wearing a t-shirt and jeans, and feels way too exposed.

He shakes his head slightly at himself. How much of a metaphor can you get? He likes to be bundled up in layers, hiding behind them. Maybe thats why he's had such crappy luck in relationships.

Lucas walked into Mixed Leaves to get him and Layla an iced coffee of some sort, thinking they could take a walk along the lake, maybe go for a swim.

He was wearing a pair of shorts and a shirt that was open. It was a warm day and he'd be spending it with Layla and he figured she wouldn't mind him walking around with her with his shirt open.

He walked in and spotted Mark sitting by himself.

"Hey," he said smiling.

Maureen had been busy between getting her bearings and trying to get to know people with varying degrees of success she hadn't seen Mark in a while.

She gets the feeling he's been avoiding her.

So she's made it her mission to find him, he promised he'd stage manage for her and ok she hadn't written her script yet, but still, she needed to know he was still on board.

Maureen checked out the library, and the screening rooms without much luck she was warm and decided some kind of iced latte was in order and she tried mixed leaves.

Lo and behold, a Markie.

She walks up to him and throws her arms around his neck planting a kiss on his cheek.

"You've been avoiding me."

	He narrows his eyes when she almost uses that nickname. But she stops just in time. He sighs. "Romana and I... we broke up," he says. He doesn't look up at her, cos talking to the girl that's broken his heart several times over about your current relationship going under is not an easy thing to do. "Aw Markie." she says and gets up out of her seat and throws her arms around him in a big hug. He stiffens in her arms slightly and she thinks that maybe it wasn't the most of appropriate things she could have done.

"It's okay honey, I'm sure you'll feel better soon, and I know you'll be thinking it weird talking to me and that I won't care, but I do care about you Markie, you're my stage manager and best friend all rolled into one."

He hugs her back after a second's hesitation. There's still a small portion of his brain that really wants to drag her into his lap and kiss her, and its harder to resist the urge at this particular moment.

But he does. And he pulls back and smiles gratefully.

"Thanks," he says. "I'm okay, or I will be."

"So how are you settling in?" he asks, wanting to steer the conversation in a different direction.

Maureen eyes him suspiciously. He doesn't want to talk about it too much. Fair enough she thinks, but she sees a half glimpse of something.

"Yeah you will be." She nods.

He asks how she's settling in.

"I'm doing good, I have met a few people, made new friends and I'm writing a new piece for Here." She thinks of Derek but doesn't think it would be fair to bring him into this conversation. "Yeah, I met Lucas and Layla and a few others."

Maureen turns to a waiter, "Can I get and iced tea too?"

She smiles at Mark willing him to open up a little.

"Yeah, they are good kids, Lucas showed me round when I first arrived, and Layla I gave a tango lesson to." she smiles.

He asks about the project.

"Its going to be about Here, and sticking it to the man or whoever, whatever brought us Here, we're politcal prisoners you know.? We need to raise awareness of this. That's where you come in mister stage manager/publicity man."

Her iced tea arrives and she smiles her thanks to her waiter.

"Its no life cafe Here." she says a little mopily.

She takes a long slurp and returns to the subject of the piece.

"Its still very much in development about now, but it will be good and the facilities Here are okay but I won't be able to do a full scale piece, maybe stripped down would work better what do you think?"

She looks at Mark.

"Are you just letting me rattle on and tuning me out?" She puts her hands on her hips and pouts. "Markie! Shame on you."

He listens to her talk about her piece, how excited she is, and smiles. She's so excited about it, he's always loved her enthusiasm, and helping her with her pieces was often maddening but her happiness when she'd accomplished it was always worth it, in the end.

"Of course not," he says, scandalised. "I never tune you out. I've been thinking how to promote it. And how we'll set up the ballroom. We'll need to go to Manny to get some equipment, he has pretty much everything you'll need. Anything particularly extravagant you have in mind you'd like to pull off?"

"Its all pretty early in the planning stages so far, I've only just started devising the performance, I'd guess a delay pretty much a given, some pre-recorded sections, not sure how much scenery would be needed and less is more right?"

Maureen puts her hand on Mark's knee and gives it a gentle squeeze, "You always were my best stage manager."

She looks at him wistfully a moment, half toying with an idea.

"So there's this guy Manny he can get us equipment, I'll need to work out exactly what I'll need..."

Maureen pauses and her voice softens.

"Thanks Markie."

Mark nods.

"Actually, we should see what my computer can do. I have a new camera, its from a few years in our future and can do some really cool things. And I have some programmes on my laptop that can record and mix songs, for any tracks you want to do. And I can add some cool effects to filmed sections."

Her hand finds his knee and squeezes, and she's smiling at him. He remembers all the times they planned and put on performances before, how much fun it was, how creative she could be.

He grins. "I'm honoured," he replies warmly.

"Yeah, Manny has lots of random things. Just make a list, we'll arrange everything."

He's getting excited about all of this too, not only because he likes to do it, but it has been a while since he has something to do Here. And it'll definitely distract him from everything else in his life.

Maureen listens as Mark tells her about his computer and new camera can do she bounces in her chair. "That would be awesome, we could project images of me around the ball room doing different things at different times, like different aspects of being Here. That's given me some inspiration to play some more.” She enthuses.

Mark’s getting excited about the prospect of this too and its almost like old times, almost.

Maureen pauses, the idea she was toying with earlier is back. She chews on her lower lip slightly hesitant.

“Markie,” she begins. “All this talk of planning – kinda like old times, huh?”

She looks at him wistfully, “You know if you wanted to, we could hook up, take your mind off Romana.”

She watches him carefully, not getting back together but if she could offer him some comfort, she would.

"Oh, God, Maureen," he groans.

She's biting her lip, her hand still on his knee. She looks so damn hot, not that she ever doesn't. What she's offering him is more than tempting...

But no, no, that way madness lies. For him, mostly. He can't go down that road again, especially not now.

"I - I don't think that would be a good idea. I really don't."

It's killing him to be this strong.
