Dealing With It - OTA
Who: Kitty Pryde - Open to All
Where: The Pantry Restaurant.
When: A few days after the funeral.
Rating: PG (?)

"A hero is an ordinary individual who finds the strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles."

- Christopher Reeve, American Actor, Film Director, Activist, 1952  - 2004

Kitty Pryde sits alone in the restaurant that has the most casual feel to it: bamboo chairs with nice cushions, wainscoting, dusky-rose walls. There are table cloths and linen napkins, but nothing fancy. It isn't easy to relax completely - since the explosion, every loud sound is a potential attack - and there are some rooms that just don't feel right, though she doesn't know why.

She hasn't been back to the game's room since that freaky experience she and Remy had witnessed, where the billiard balls had moved by themselves.

Before her is a plate with scones and clotted cream and strawberry preserve: an interpretation of a British tea. A large pot of tea is steeping next to the plate, and while she waits, she tries to focus on the book she's reading: 'Pride & Prejudice', by Jane Austen. She'd first read it when she was eleven, and knew she'd enjoy it. Something light but fun, something to take her away for a bit. It went very well with the tea, too.

There were so many people she hadn't been able to help. She's delighted beyond words that she was there for Layla and Lucas, and thanks God she heard the scream and arrived when she did. But she's a superhero, dammit, and they're supposed to be able to do more. Even with all her years of experience - she has been doing this since she was thirteen-and-a-half - she still expects more from herself during a crisis.

She sighs and tries to get lost in a different century, where, in some social circles, who you married was more important than who you loved.

Belle had been walking past the resturant when she'd spotted the girl that could walk through walls. The young girl she'd met only a few times since being here.

She looks immersed in her book and its almost a shame to interrupt her.

Almost.

"How y'holdin up petiet" she tries, deciding at least to attempt nice.

Kitty didn't jump, but she did look up and blink, trying to focus from words to a face. She blinks again.

Belladonna.

"Uh, hi," she says, and smiles. Kitty decides that comparing this woman with the Belladonna she knows from her time line isn't fair, so she uncurls from her chair a little and adds, "I'm okay. You?"

And she manages to gesture to the chair across from her, indicating that she is welcome.

Belle notices the blink, its just there for a second but its there.

"T'anks. Jus' remember you from t'pary, seem so long ago now..."

She takes the seat opposite the young girl.

"We never really got to talkin an' t'is explosion, it making me t'ink t'at I shoul' try an' get t'know people oui?, I'm holdin' up fine as it happens...Remy's alive an' he's mah everythin' y'understan' "

"Yeah, that party seems like a long time ago."

She nods, a bit numbly, at the reference to Remy. "Of course, yeah, that makes sense." A bit desperate for something to do, she sets the book aside and lifts the tea pot. "Would you like a cup? It should be ready by now."

Still there was something.

"You okay petiet...Jus' when I mention my Remy y'look...troubled. Maybe you make me t'at tea and tell me why?"

Kid probobly had a crush on him. Belle could understand that. Would have to put an end to it of course, but it was understandable.

She laughs lightly and pours two cups of tea.

"Obvious, huh? Well, I was trying. You see, I'm either from a different universe than you are, or a different time, or both. The Remy I know is older, more experienced, and the X-Men - my teammates - have encountered a... Belladonna, and it hasn't been the best situation. I promise, I'm trying not to see you and think you're her, because you are and you aren't."

Kitty sighed. "Sorry if I'm not making sense." She pushed the plate of treats toward Belle. "Scone?"

Belle listened intently. The Belladonna this girl had met, had encountered these X Men. And apparently it had not been a happy encounter She wondered had she perhaps had a contract on one. Though if they knew an older Remy.

She took a scone and reached for the jam.

"Not the best sit'ation, what'd I...did she do to t'ese X Men. Contract? Jus' plain ol' dislike...gotta be somthin' t'make you look like y'do when y'saw me."

Kitty looks down, a little embarrassed.

"Yeeeee-ah, sorry about that. Remy is known as 'Gambit' to me, and he's one of the X-Men." She waves her hand briefly. "It's a long story. The short form is we're a superhero team. That's the really short form. Gambit hangs with us sometimes. The Belladonna I know didn't like that, wanted him to be with her and the Guild and all."

She picks up a scone, cuts it in half and waits for the jam.

Belle for a moment assumed she was lying. Little brat. But there was something in the way she'd said it, some level of...not fear exactly.

And her Remy was a superhero.

"Guilds...t'ere's two, an' our marrige was s'ppose to unite t'em, but didn' work out e'scactly like we t'ought."

Strange future though, Remy would never leave her completely like that. To become one of these...X Men.

"I don' t'ink I'm t'at Belladonna, S'like I been told. Differen' worlds."

Besides, Remy loved her.

She twirled the butter knife automaticly in her hand a few times before passing it handle first to Kitty and sliding across the jam.

She watches the knife twirl, ready to act just in case it's going to be aimed at her, then accepts the handle and reaches for the jam, relaxing slightly.

"Nah, I think you're from another universe," she says, agreeing regardless of whether or not it was true. They have no way to discover that, anyway, so why be worried about it?

Yeah. Right.

"Though the Guild story is similar." She shrugs and finishes with the knife. She sets it down on a side plate, so the table cloth doesn't get messy and pours milk into her tea. "It's all kinda weird Here."

The girl is still scared of her.

In some ways, Belle likes that, keeps her on her toes, Maybe she'll let something else slip.

"Diffr'nce bein' t'Remy LeBeau I know woul' never join up wit' a bunch o'...superheroes. He jus' wouldn'"

Though she'd once believed he'd never leave her.

"Tell me bout him, D'Remy you know"

Kitty bites into her scone and nods. She's still a little nervous of Belle and not really in the mood to have a fight, but she has her training, which includes that damned demon Ogun knowledge inside her, and she'd be okay. She's just... so darned tired, and wants her tea.

She sighs. "The Remy I got to know wasn't thrilled with the idea of joining... 'a bunch of superheroes', as you put it. He balked at spandex and chaffed at rules and generally butted heads with various folks." She has another bite of her scone and contemplates the Gambit from her universe.

"I think hooking up with us for a bit was... convenient for him, and it worked well for us." She smiles. "And hey, he plays a good game of basketball, so I have some sort of challenge, and he taught me how to hustle at pool, and... he's saved a lot of lives."

Kitty finishes her scone and sips her tea, settling back into her chair. "Tell me about him," she asks quietly. "The Remy you know."

Belle smiled, that sounded like her Remy. Hating any kind of authority, chafing almost at anything like rules.

"Can jus' imagine it" she said genuinely amused. "Followin w'at is conviniant."

She sipped her tea thinking of how to answer in return.

"Remy LeBeau...met him on streets of Nawlins, two of us lil kids runnin t'streets...jus' kids...we didn' know what friendship would mean. I'm an assassin, dunno if y'knew t'at. Assassin's Guild, an Remy a t'ief. It jus' weren't done...an' I t'ink on some level he knew, an' he liked it...liked playin' wit' fire. Daughter of assassins...an t'at's how we started...

Wasn't long till we were in love...an' he did, he loved me petiet...We were t'get married an' join t'guilds. An' we had a weddin' everyone attended...wonderful day till..."

She shook her head.

"He's a good man much as he hates t'believe it his'self. I can imagine him as a hero...Got more morals t'an I do...more good in him...He's carin'."

The woman talks about him with what seems like genuine affection. Kitty would even go so far as to call it 'love'.

She sips her tea, nods in the right places, and tries to picture the ceremony, all those Guild people, probably glaring at one another, only separated by an aisle at a wedding...

This is Belladonna, though, and other universe or not, a tiger is a tiger is a tiger. Kitty is going to give her the benefit of the doubt, but stay on her toes.

"He is a good man, absolutely, and yeah, he's a hero, alright, much as he might like to scoff at the idea." She sighs. "Of course, that's the Gambit I know. The one Here is cool, too, he just hasn't done all that other stuff yet."

And she finishes her scone and reaches for another one.

Belle smiled dangerously.

"Do you t'ink t'at he will...Leave me an' join up wit' you all... X Men. Do heroes oft'n walk out on t'ere wives?"

She watches Kitty closely as if she was prey.

"Did he ever talk about me, T'Remy you knew"

Kitty blinks at her. "Do I think he will join the X-Men? Belle, for me, he already has. The Remy Here isn't my Gambit. He's cool and all, but in my universe, all that's happened."

She shrugs. It might not be the answer the woman is looking for, but it's the way things are. She butters her scone, aware she'd being watched very closely. If Kitty hadn't been through piles of shit and levels of Hell and destruction already, she might be nervous, but she isn't, not really.

"He didn't talk about you much, the Remy I know back home, at least, not to me. He was a very private person."
