Tennis, anyone?
Who: Jack Harkness and OTA.
Where: The Tennis Courts of Here.
When: Daylight. That leaves it nice and open.
What: Tennis, anyone?

[[ OOC: And Slow-Time, folks, life being the way it is these days...]]

The seasons are changing, but Jack decided that wasn't going to stop him from dressing in tennis whites, reminiscent of the 1920's - isn't the Boutique amazing? - grabbing some tennis gear and setting up the ball machine on the far side of the court. Using the remote, he activates the unit and it starts lobbing balls toward him at a steady pace. He paces himself and pursues the balls, bouncing on his feet, white teeth gleaming in a smile of joy.

He's been looking for puzzle pieces for the last week. It was time to let out some of that frustration.

Simon stood and watched the man for a few moments. It had been a long time since he'd played tennis or seen anyone else play it. Probably sometime when River and him had been children and River beat him every time. He did know that the guy playing was good.

"You have good form," he said.

Jack turned his head at the voice and a tennis ball went thok into his skull. He grinned and went down.

"Thanks," he said from the ground, a bit stunned but otherwise fine.

Simon walked to him quickly.

"Are you okay? My apologizes, I did not mean to startle you."

He laughed, even though it hurt a bit.

"Oh, no. I'm fine. Not a worry."

Jack rolled to his knees and gave his head a shake, saying in a faux Italian accent: "That was a-spicy tennis ball!"

Simon offered the man a hand up.

"If you are sure," he said when Jack said he was fine.

Jack accepted the hand with a grin.

"Oh, I'm sure." Then he managed to stand without putting much weight on the man. "I'm pretty indestructible."

Which was an understatement, but true.

"You are?" Simon asked curiously.

"Uh, yeah. Long story. So, you play tennis? Wait!"

He held up one hand.

"I've got this backwards. I'm Jack."

And he offered to shake.

He shook Jack's hand.

"Jack, it is good to meet you, I am Simon," he said. "And I used to play tennis with my sister River. I have not played in some time."

Jack brightened.

"River? River is your sister? I've met her.Nice girl. She can't read me, which wasn't a surprise, but it helps her head. Nice and quiet. She's... quite extra-ordinary, isn't she?"

He released Simon's hand.

"So. Wanna play a game?"

"Yes she is. She couldn't read you?" he asked sounding surprised.

"That she is. She's a gift. There is nothing she can not do as naturally as breathing comes to us."

"I do not wish to impose," Simon said politely at his offer.

"Nope. I'm a nice, quiet, blank space. My words, not hers, but you get the idea. I've been called much worse. She's quiet until you get her going, then she's... not chatty, per se..."

Jack shrugs.

"Not an imposition at all, my good man. There's equipment in the shed. Grab a racket and let's, well... make a racket!"

"Yes I understand what you mean. She has had a very rough time and often things can get too much for her. She feels everything, she can't not. But she is my sister and I will do everything to make sure that she is safe and they never find her again."

"OK, I shall 'grab a racket,'" he said. He walked to the shed and picked one up.

Jack nodded at Simon's protectiveness of his sister.

"I commend you," he said, trying not to think about his own family, who were long, long gone. "And now, to tennis." He rolled the ball machine off the court, retrieved four balls, which he held in one hand and returned, waiting for Simon to emerge.

He emerged with a tennis racket.

"You serve," he said.

"Right-o, old bean," he said, putting on a snobbish, British accent. He tossed one of the balls into the air and and gave it a good whack with his racket.

Simon moved and hit the ball over to Jack's side.

"Hey-hey! Good shot!"

Jack returned the ball, bouncing from one foot to the other, glad for the exercise and the distraction.
