Pop, clunk, schick, chunk.

Each closing of the little wooden jaw sent the shells crumbling to pieces, falling to the tabletop like broken wood. She set another nut inside, careful not to catch her own fingers in the contraption as she pushed it down again.

Crick, crack, rickety-split.

The shells were left where they fell as the nuts were picked from the tiny man’s mouth, set in a small pile until there were enough for a batch. A pot of sweet, sticky delight simmered on the stovetop, waiting to be poured into a bowl so the nuts could be dropped, one by one, into the mixture.

Tick, tack, wrench, shack.

Another broken shell, the soft sound of the nuts hitting the surface of the liquid as tiny hands poured them in. Expert fingers whisked the mixture around, whipping it into a frenzied storm of nuts and sweets until they were all coated completely. The nuts dripped tiny tears of fear onto the counter as they were placed on the baking sheet, perfect rows ready to be baked.

Sizzling, bubbling, hissing.

It didn’t take long for the coating to harden, crystallizing on the outside of the nuts like amber. Sitting out to cool, they looked like tiny gems in the light, sparkling with sugar and cinnamon seduction. Rhode reached out carefully after a few minutes of settling, picking one up carefully and setting it on her tongue. A soft sigh of contentment escaped her as the taste flooded her senses, sweet, sugary goodness in every moment of the consumption. Candied nuts were her favorite holiday treat, after all, especially when Tiki helped mix up the sweets to cover them in.
